Chapter 44
GRAHAM
“We are so sorry, Bill.” I try to apologize to this man.
I know he loves Nyx as much as if she was actually his blood.
She had told me that he and his wife had fertility issues when they were younger, so they never ended up having children, and with his job they weren’t sure if adoption or fostering was a good idea for them.
When she was growing up, her dad and Bill were best friends.
She spent a lot of time at his small farm with the animals.
Once her dad passed, he took over the dad role.
Cathy, his wife, always has her over for the holidays, and from what I hear, was taking on the mother of the bride role when she was engaged.
I can only hope they would still want to take on that role when we finally get to propose to our girl. Yes, we have talked about it already between Dee and myself, briefly.
“It’s ok, Hutch. I know how stubborn she can be.
” He pats me on the shoulder. “I’m mad, yes, but I also know how she is.
She thinks she can take on the world, and with you two at her back, she probably can.
” His last statement makes my heart swell.
I am so proud that he thinks we can help her take on the world.
I scan my thumb and let him into the office.
“Have a seat, Bill. Dee and my brother Callum will be up shortly, if he’s home.”
“Callum? Wait, you have a brother?” His face has shock written all over it.
“Ya, he’s my little brother, but I think he might finally be taller than me. He just medically retired from the Marines and has been staying in our guest house. I also think he has a small crush on Kyra, so he is completely involved in helping us find them.”
“It’s not a small crush, brother. I will make her mine.” Callum responds as they walk into the office. “Good morning, Captain Montgomery.” He sticks his hand out to Bill in greeting. “I am Callum Hutchinson.”
“Good morning.” Bill shakes his hand before they both take a seat opposite our desks.
“Ok.” Dee claps his hands together. “Graham, will you please pull up all the photos we have?” I start to log into my encrypted drives, and as soon as the stalker files are pulled up I share them on the big screen on the wall.
“So this is the first note that was found.” I pull up the photo of the note and the photos of the destroyed apartment.
“When was this?” Both Cal and Bill ask.
“This was the day of the second home Tigers game we worked. We took her home after the game, and this is what we found.” Dee answers.
“She also felt someone watching her the day before when we were walking to the truck the day before, but none of us thought anything of it at the time.” I pull up the photos of the paint all over her apartment, and then the box of photos we received here.
“This was the last time she stayed in her apartment. We picked her and Midnight up and brought them here. This house is impenetrable. Trust us, they tried another time.”
“Fuck.” Cap drags his hands through his hair again. All of us will be balding by the time we find these two women who have taken over our lives. “Ok, can you send all this over to me at the station email? Do you still have the notes or anything? Maybe we can pull prints off of them.”
“The notes are here in an evidence bag.” Dee pulls them out of his desk.
“I’m not going to ask how you got these bags. I’ll send these in to see if we can get prints off of them. Let’s run these to the station and then head to Mike’s. You can either follow me over or we can meet there.” Bill stands up and takes the notes with him.
“You know we always have our ways, Bill.” Demitri lets out a small chuckle.
Bill and Callum stand up on the other side of our desks.
Everyone agrees to head over to the station quickly to drop off the evidence, and Bill will then lead the way to Mike’s.
He thinks Mike might take the information better from law enforcement, and he is going to just play off that we are helping the cops with my “tech skills”.
We will just disregard the blatant conflict of interest Devil Dog has in the kidnapping. I don’t think Mike even knows we exist. I close up the files on my computer and lock the drive away in the drawer of my desk.
Demitri stands up and turns to face me. “Alright,” he takes a deep breath. “Let’s go face this dickhead.”
