CHAPTER 8 — “Slow Growth” #5

“Is that what they’re calling it now? Interesting.” He moves closer, studying me the way I might study an alchemical compound. “You’re doing well. The class evolution was a good choice. The training, the preparations—all good. But you’re missing something.”

“What?”

“The key. The real key, not the mana signature.” He gestures at the spell matrix floating between us. “This technique, the one you’re trying to reconstruct—it’s not complete. The fragments in the dungeon are only part of it. The rest…”

“The rest is where?”

He smiles, and it’s sad, and knowing, and exactly the expression I make when I’m about to deliver bad news.

“The rest is in you. It’s always been in you.

But it’s locked away, sealed, protected by the same fragmentation that cost you your power.

” He reaches out, touches my chest over my heart.

“The Mary Harvest didn’t just steal your mana.

It stole pieces of your knowledge, your memories, your understanding.

The technique you’re looking for is still here, buried under everything they took. ”

“How do I access it?”

“You recover. Floor by floor. Fragment by fragment.” His hand falls away. “The dungeon is a path, not a destination. Every floor you clear gives back a piece of what was taken. By the time you reach Floor 10…”

“I’ll have everything I need.”

“You’ll have the chance at everything you need. There are no guarantees.” He starts to fade, the edges of him going translucent. “One more thing.”

“What?”

“The woman. The sister.”

I tense. “Mariella?”

“She’s important. More than you know. The connection between you—it’s not coincidence.” His voice is growing distant now, barely a whisper. “Trust her. Even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.”

“Why?”

But he’s gone, and I’m alone in the dream workshop, and the spell matrix is spinning faster now, symbols blurring into light.

I wake up gasping.

Dawn is breaking through the cottage windows.

Mariella is already up, moving quietly around the space, building a fire. Johnson is watching me from his spot by the hearth, eyes too knowing for comfort.

Another dream?

“Another echo.”

What did he say?

I think about the message. About fragments and keys and the woman who’s important in ways I don’t understand.

“He said to trust her. Mariella.” I sit up, running a hand through my hair. “He said the connection between us isn’t coincidence.”

Interesting. Johnson’s ears twitch. Do you believe him?

“I don’t know. He’s me, but he’s also… not. A fragment, he said. A memory. How much can I trust a piece of myself that’s been floating in a dungeon for two hundred years?”

The same amount you trust yourself, presumably. Which is to say: cautiously, with frequent reality checks.

Mariella looks over at us, pausing in her fire-building. “You’re up early. Bad dreams?”

“Complicated dreams.” I push myself out of bed. “I need to go back to the dungeon soon. Floor 4.”

“Already?”

“The faster I clear floors, the faster I recover. And we don’t have time to go slowly—not with imperial scouts watching.”

I pull up the dungeon status, reviewing what I know about the floors ahead.

Underleveled again. Story of my second life.

She nods, understanding without needing explanation. “What do you need from me?”

“Keep the farm running. Keep Mira company. Watch for strangers.” I pause. “And if something happens—if I don’t come back—get out. Take Johnson. Run.”

“I’m not leaving without you.”

“Mariella—”

“I’ve been running for seven years,” she says, her voice steady. “I’m tired of running. If something happens to you, I’ll deal with it. But I’m not abandoning the only person who’s ever treated me like I was worth something.”

She means it, Johnson confirms. Stubbornly, irrationally, completely.

“You’re both going to get yourselves killed.”

“Probably.” She goes back to the fire, her posture somehow defiant and vulnerable at the same time. “But at least we’ll do it together.”

I don’t know how to respond to that.

So I don’t.

I just start preparing for Floor 4, while the sun rises over the farm, and somewhere in the distance, the dungeon waits.
