CHAPTER 9 — “Fang and Crystal”
Which, honestly, is an improvement over fungus and drowning corpses. I’m learning to appreciate the small things in life. Or death. Whatever this is.
I’m crouched at the entrance to the Beast Den, peering into a cavern that’s basically a nature documentary’s nightmare.
The space is massive—bigger than any floor so far, with rocky outcroppings and dense undergrowth that shouldn’t be able to grow underground but apparently does anyway.
Bioluminescent plants cast everything in shades of blue and silver, making the whole place look like someone’s fever dream of a forest.
And everywhere—everywhere—there are tracks.
Paw prints. Claw marks. Drag trails that suggest things get eaten down here regularly.
Cozy, Johnson observes from my shoulder. Very homey. I can see why you chose to build a murder forest underground.
“I don’t remember building this.”
Selective amnesia is a wonderful thing. Protects us from our own poor decisions.
“Thanks for that.”
Always here to help.
I check my status one more time, because paranoia is a survival trait and I’ve got it in spades.

Two levels under minimum. Four levels under comfortable.
Par for the course, really.
“What am I looking at?” I ask Johnson, because he’s been watching this dungeon longer than I’ve been alive. This time around, anyway.
Pack hunters, mostly. Dire Wolves, Shadow Cats, things with too many teeth and not enough brain cells. His ears swivel, tracking sounds I can’t hear. They’re territorial. Each pack claims a section of the floor. Cross into their territory and they’ll swarm you.
“How do I avoid that?”
You don’t. The floor is designed to force confrontation. The paths between territories are narrow, exposed. You have to fight through.
“Of course I do.”
You built it this way.
“Past me was an asshole.”
Present you isn’t winning any personality awards either.
Fair point.
I take a breath, check my gear one final time, and step into the Beast Den.
The first pack finds me within ten minutes.
I’m moving through a narrow canyon between two rocky outcroppings when the growling starts. Low, rumbling, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once. My [Arcane Sight] flickers on automatically, and I see them—mana signatures crouched in the shadows, spreading out to surround me.
Six of them. Big. Wrong-looking, the way dungeon creatures always are—like someone described a wolf to an artist who’d never seen one and told them to make it scarier.

“Johnson.”
I see them.
“Can you take the leader?”
Can I take a Level 11 Dire Wolf in single combat? A pause that’s somehow offended. I’m insulted you even asked. Of course I can.
“Then do it. I’ll handle the rest.”
You’ll handle five wolves.
“I’ll handle five wolves.”
You’re insane.
“Probably.”
The alpha howls.
Everything happens at once.
Johnson launches himself from my shoulder like a furry missile, crossing the distance to the alpha in a blur of motion that my eyes can barely track. The wolves charging me hesitate—just for a second, confused by the sudden attack on their leader—and that second is all I need.
The first Volatile Flask leaves my hand.
I’ve been practicing with [Volatile Catalyst], learning how to convert potions into weapons. This particular flask started as a healing poultice, got infused with mana until it was unstable, and is now basically a grenade made of medicine.
It doesn’t heal when it explodes.

Three wolves go tumbling, yelping, temporarily out of the fight. Two more keep coming—smart enough or dumb enough to push through the chaos.
I draw my cleaver.
The first wolf lunges. I sidestep—barely, its teeth scraping my armor—and bring the blade down on its spine. Not a kill, but enough to make it stumble. The second wolf hits me from behind, jaws clamping on my arm, and the pain is immediate and spectacular.
“GET OFF—”
I slam my elbow into its skull. Once. Twice. It doesn’t let go.
Fine.
I shove my free hand into my pouch, grab a fistful of [Bitterwort]—the poison-base herb from my garden—and jam it directly into the wolf’s eye.
The reaction is instantaneous. It releases me, howling, clawing at its face. I don’t give it time to recover. The cleaver comes down, and the howling stops.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The bleeding is a problem. The three recovering wolves are a bigger problem. And the first wolf I hit—the one with the spinal injury—is dragging itself toward me with the kind of determination that suggests it doesn’t know it’s supposed to be crippled.
I really hate dungeons.
The injured wolf reaches me just as I’m turning, and I stomp down on its head with more force than I knew I had. Something crunches. It stops moving.
Two down. Four to go. Plus the alpha.
Speaking of which—
A body flies past me, hits the canyon wall, and slides down in a heap. It’s one of the wolves, not Johnson, which means things are going well on that front.
The alpha’s tough, Johnson reports, his mental voice strained but focused. Tougher than expected. Could use some help when you’re done playing with the puppies.
“Working on it.”
The three disoriented wolves are back on their feet now, shaking off the effects of the explosion. They spread out, circling, learning from their packmate’s mistakes.
Great. Smart wolves. My favorite.
I pull out another potion—one of my Enhanced Healing Poultices—and make a decision that’s either brilliant or suicidal.
I drink it.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The nausea hits immediately—my stomach does something unpleasant and my vision swims—but the bleeding stops. The wounds on my arm start closing.
Worth it.
The wolves attack.
The next two minutes are a blur of fur and teeth and desperate violence.
I kill one wolf with a lucky strike to the throat.
Another goes down when I bait it into a charge and redirect it into the canyon wall.
The third one almost gets me—teeth closing on my leg, dragging me down—but [Soul Echo] activates at exactly the wrong moment, and suddenly I’m not fighting like a Level 10 Arcane Apothecary.
I’m fighting like a Level 97 Archmage.
My body moves on autopilot, muscle memory from a life I don’t fully remember taking over.
The cleaver comes around in an arc that’s impossibly precise, severing the wolf’s spine at the exact vertebra that controls motor function.
It drops, paralyzed, and I finish it before my brain catches up to what my hands just did.
