CHAPTER 9 — “Fang and Crystal” #2

The echo fades, and I’m back to being myself. Slower. Weaker. Painfully aware of the gap between who I am and who I used to be.

But five wolves are dead.

And the alpha—

The alpha is on the ground, Johnson standing on its chest, blood dripping from his fur. His eyes are glowing silver, that strange light I’ve seen before, and his shadow stretches wrong behind him.

Handled, he says, hopping off the corpse with studied casualness. Though I may have expended more effort than anticipated.

“Are you okay?”

I’m a creature of cosmic significance. I don’t get ‘not okay.’ He pauses, licking blood from his paw. But I could use a rest before we continue.

“Agreed.”

I slump against the canyon wall, letting the adrenaline fade, taking stock of the damage.

I check the corpses while I catch my breath.

The regular wolves don’t have much—some teeth and claws that might be useful for crafting, fur that’s too damaged from the fight to be worth much. But the alpha…

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

A beast core. That’s interesting. Regular dire wolves shouldn’t have those—cores are usually reserved for magical creatures, golems, higher-tier entities. But this one…

The dungeon is changing, Johnson says, echoing my thoughts. The deeper floors are supposed to be sealed, but mana is leaking up. The creatures are evolving.

“Is that bad?”

It’s different. Different can be bad or good. He hops onto my shoulder, settling into his usual spot. For now, it means better loot. Later, it might mean bigger problems.

Great. Something else to worry about.

I pocket the core and keep moving.

The next three hours are exhausting.

I fight two more packs—smaller ones, four wolves each—and a pair of Shadow Cats that almost kill me because they attack from complete invisibility and the only warning I get is Johnson screaming LEFT in my head half a second before claws rake across my ribs.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

I burn through two more potions and most of my remaining mana, but I learn something valuable: [Arcane Sight] can detect Shadow Cats if I focus hard enough. Their invisibility is mana-based, and mana leaves traces.

I also learn that Johnson can smell them, which would have been useful information before one of them tried to tear my face off.

I assumed you’d figure it out, he says when I complain about this.

“You assumed I’d figure out that invisible cats have a smell?”

They smell like shadows and poor life choices. It’s distinctive.

“What do shadows smell like?”

Like shadows. Keep up.

By the time I reach the floor boss chamber, I’m running on fumes. Three health potions gone. One antitoxin used when a wolf bite turned out to be venomous (because of course it was). My armor is more scratch than leather.

But I’m still moving.

That’s what matters.

││ This is fine. Everything is fine." │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Zero potions. Half health. A venom debuff slowly eating away at me.

Johnson puts it best:

This is going to hurt.

The boss chamber is a colosseum.

There’s no other word for it. A massive circular arena, ringed by stone seats that rise in tiers toward a ceiling I can barely see. The seats are empty—this dungeon has never had an audience—but the space feels like it’s meant for spectacle.

And in the center, sleeping on a pile of bones that suggests a very successful hunting career, is the biggest wolf I’ve ever seen.

" │└─────────────────────────────────────────────────┘

Eleven percent.

I stare at that number for a long moment.

We should turn back, Johnson says. Clear the floor, return later with full resources. There’s no shame in tactical retreat.

He’s right. This is stupid. Going into a boss fight at half strength against something three levels higher than me, with no potions and a venom debuff? That’s not brave. That’s suicidal.

But.

But what?

“But I’m already here.” I check my cleaver, make sure the grip is solid. “And if I leave, I have to fight through all those packs again on the way out. And then fight through them again when I come back.”

That’s not sound logic.

“It’s efficient logic. I clear the boss now, the floor stays cleared. I don’t have to do this twice.”

You don’t have to do this at all if you’re dead.

“Then I won’t die.”

That’s not how probability works.

“Probability is a suggestion, not a law.”

Johnson is silent for a moment. Then, something that might be a sigh:

Fine. But when we die, I reserve the right to say ‘I told you so’ for all eternity.

“Fair enough.”

I step into the arena.

Fenris wakes up the moment I cross the threshold.

There’s no gradual awakening—no stretching, no yawning, no transition from sleep to consciousness. One second it’s motionless, the next its eyes are open and fixed on me with the kind of focus that makes my primitive brain scream PREDATOR.

It doesn’t attack immediately. It watches. Evaluates. This thing has intelligence behind those yellow eyes, more than any beast should have.

Then it stands, and I realize the threat analysis undersold “horse-sized.”

This wolf is the size of a small elephant.

“Okay,” I breathe. “That’s… that’s big.”

Eloquent, Johnson says. Truly, your way with words is inspiring.

Fenris opens its mouth, and the howl that emerges isn’t just sound—it’s force. A wave of pure dominance that slams into me like a physical blow, and suddenly my legs don’t want to move, my hands don’t want to grip, my whole body is screaming at me to run run run—
