CHAPTER 14 — “Magma and Memory” #2

╔═══════════════════════════════════════╗║ BOSS ENCOUNTER ║║ ║║ MAGMA WYRM (Floor Guardian) ║║ Level: 22 ║║ Type: Elemental Dragon (Lesser) ║║ HP: ████████████████ (A LOT) ║║ Weakness: Cold (duh) ║║ Resistance: Fire (obviously), most ║║ physical damage ║║ ║║ Special Abilities: ║║ ? ║║ Perhaps farming would be fulfilling. ║║ You have nice fields now.

Good soil. ║║ Just a thought. ║╚═══════════════════════════════════════╝

It’s huge.

I knew it would be huge—it’s a wyrm, they’re not known for their compact size—but there’s knowing something intellectually and then there’s standing in front of it watching its body unfold and unfold and keep unfolding as it rises to acknowledge your presence.

Forty feet long. Maybe fifty. Scales like cooling lava, black and orange in patterns that shift as its internal heat fluctuates.

Eyes that burn white-hot, fixed on me with the patient intelligence of something that knows it’s at the top of the food chain and finds your presence more amusing than threatening.

I am outmatched.

Significantly, dangerously, probably-going-to-die-here outmatched. This is the kind of fight you’re supposed to bring a party to. Tank to hold aggro. DPS to exploit openings. Healer to keep everyone alive. Support to handle the arena hazards.

I have a rabbit.

“Okay,” I say, mostly to myself. “Okay. We can do this. We’ve done harder things. We killed a literal god once. One overgrown salamander isn’t—”

The Magma Wyrm opens its mouth and screams.

Not a roar. Not a challenge. A scream—high-pitched, resonant, designed to vibrate at frequencies that turn your bones to jelly. The sound hits me like a physical force, and suddenly I’m not here anymore.

Gorath standing there. Watching. Couldn’t even look me in the eye.

“It’s for the best, Velthar. You have to understand—”

“Let GO of me—”

But he doesn’t. He’s the Tank. Holding things in place is literally his job. And I’m bleeding from Dario’s sword and my magic’s failing and Persephone is crying as she draws the first sigil on my skin—

I’m on my knees.

When did I fall? The wyrm’s screaming cut off at some point, but I didn’t notice, too lost in memories that taste like blood and betrayal. Johnson’s standing between me and the boss, hackles raised, growling a warning that probably sounds more impressive to dungeon creatures than it does to me.

The Magma Wyrm watches. Patient. Interested.

“Get up,” I tell myself. “Get up, you useless—”

It moves.

Fast, way too fast for something that size, liquid motion that eats the distance between us in a heartbeat. Mouth opening. Molten Breath charging in its throat, orange light building to white—

Johnson intercepts.

Shadow Step. He’s there, then he’s in the wyrm’s face, jaws clamping down on its snout with enough force to crack obsidian scales. The wyrm’s breath weapon goes wide, spraying molten rock across the arena instead of vaporizing me where I kneel.

The pain helps. Snaps me back to the present. I’m not in the Demon Lord’s throne room. I’m not dying surrounded by traitors. I’m here, now, and a really stupid rabbit is buying me time I don’t deserve.

“Johnson!”

He can’t hold it. The size difference is too extreme—even evolved, even wolf-sized, even impossible, he’s a fraction of the wyrm’s mass. It shakes him loose, sends him tumbling across the obsidian platform, and turns that white-hot gaze back to me.

I’m on my feet.

Don’t remember standing. Doesn’t matter. My hands are moving, pulling potions, calculating combinations, doing math I haven’t consciously thought about in two centuries but still remember like my own name.

“[Volatile Synthesis].”

Frost Extract. Pressurized Water. Heat-Resistant Membrane from the salamanders I killed. Salamander Core, cracked open, raw elemental essence bleeding into the mix.

This shouldn’t work.

This can’t work.

The System doesn’t have a recipe for this.

The System doesn’t have a framework for this.

I’m combining four ingredients across three incompatible synthesis pathways, bridging them with techniques I developed for Archmage-tier spellcraft, and if I’m wrong about any of it—any single variable, any one assumption—the whole thing explodes in my hands and I die for the second time in this arena.

The wyrm charges.

I throw.

║║ Seriously. We're asking. ║╚═══════════════════════════════════════╝

The grenade hits the Magma Wyrm mid-charge.

The effect is immediate and catastrophic.

Its molten body starts freezing—not cooling, freezing, ice forming across lava in patterns that shouldn’t be possible, thermal physics throwing up its hands and walking off the job.

The wyrm screams again, but this time it’s pain, not weapon.

Its scales crack. Its internal fire gutters.

It stumbles, trips over limbs that no longer respond correctly, crashes into the obsidian platform hard enough to shatter stone.

But it’s not dead.

Tough bastard. I’ll give it that. Even with its elemental nature in chaos, even with frost spreading through its body like infection, it’s still trying to rise. Still turning that head toward me. Still building another breath weapon in a throat that’s half-frozen and half-melting.

I don’t have another grenade.

I don’t have another trick.

I’m tapped. Empty. Running on fumes and spite and the desperate need to see this through because if I die here, in this dungeon I apparently built, without reclaiming what was stolen from me—

Johnson hits the wyrm like a silver meteor.

Shadow Step, but bigger. Longer. He crosses twenty feet of arena in a single bound, and his evolution isn’t finished—I can see it happening, silver light blazing around his form, his body stretching, growing, becoming more—
