Johnson—wolf-sized, silver-furred, glowing with power that shouldn’t exist in a creature that started life as a farm pest—tears into the wounded wyrm with a ferocity that makes my Archmage-tier combat spells look gentle.
[Fang Rend].
His teeth close on the wyrm’s throat. The scales—weakened by my grenade, cracked by frost, structural integrity compromised—give way like paper. He bites through. Blood that burns orange sprays across the arena.
The Magma Wyrm dies.
Just like that. One moment it’s struggling, fighting, trying to summon enough fire to burn away the silver predator on its throat. The next, it’s not. Its eyes dim. Its body goes still. The internal furnace that powered it for gods know how long finally, finally goes out.
Johnson stands on its corpse like he’s claiming territory. Blood on his muzzle. Silver light fading from his eyes. He looks at me, and I swear—I swear—there’s something smug in his expression.
We did it. You almost died. Taxes will be increased.
“Yeah,” I manage. “Good rabbit.”
Then I pass out.

I don’t remember the walk home.
One second I’m face-down on obsidian, breathing in sulfur and victory. The next I’m being dragged through fields I recognize, stars overhead, someone’s voice in my ear saying words I can’t quite parse.
Mariella.
She found me at the dungeon entrance. She tells me this later, after I wake up, but the details filter through in pieces even as they’re happening.
She saw Johnson emerge first—wolf-sized, bloody, making sounds she didn’t recognize.
Then her. Carrying me. Or trying to. I’m heavier than I look, apparently, and she’s stronger than she looks, and between the two of them they got me back to the farmhouse.
Three days.
I’m unconscious for three days.
Not a coma. Just… recovery. The System doing whatever the System does when you push your body past every reasonable limit and then keep pushing because reasonable limits are for people who haven’t decided that spite is a valid substitute for self-preservation.
When I wake up, she’s there.
Sitting in a chair by the bed that definitely wasn’t there before. Dark circles under her eyes. Hair tangled like she hasn’t brushed it in a while. Hands wrapped around a cup of tea that’s long gone cold.
“Hey,” I croak.
She drops the cup.
“You’re—” She’s on her feet, then kneeling by the bed, then gripping my shoulders hard enough to hurt. “You asshole. You absolute—three days. THREE DAYS. Do you have any idea—I thought you were—Johnson wouldn’t let me near you, he just kept growling, and I didn’t know if you were breathing, and—”
“Mariella.”
“Don’t.” Her voice cracks. “Don’t you dare ‘Mariella’ me like everything’s fine. You almost died. You dragged yourself out of that dungeon more dead than alive and you almost—”
“I’m okay.”
“You’re not. You’re NOT. And if you ever—” She stops. Breathes. Her eyes are red, I notice now. Red like she’s been crying. For me. This woman I’ve known for a few months, crying for three days because I couldn’t be bothered to bring backup to a boss fight.
“Don’t you dare leave me,” she whispers.
We both freeze.
The words hang in the air between us, heavy with meaning neither of us is ready to examine. She didn’t say leave us. Didn’t say leave the village. She said leave me.
Specific.
Personal.
Her face goes through about seventeen expressions in two seconds—shock, embarrassment, fear, something else I can’t name—and then she’s on her feet, backing toward the door.
“I should—you need rest. I’ll get you some soup. You should—soup. Yes.”
She runs.
Not walks. Runs. Out of my room, through the farmhouse, I hear the door slam and her footsteps fade into distance.
Johnson, lying at the foot of the bed like a very large furry gargoyle, opens one silver eye.
Smooth, his expression says.
“Shut up.”
You’re going to have to talk about that eventually.
“I said shut up.”
He closes his eye. Judgment radiates from every line of his body.
I stare at the ceiling. Think about what she said. Think about what it means that I want her to mean it.
Dangerous thoughts.
I have them anyway.
