CHAPTER 18 — “The Man I Was”

The night before I reclaim everything, I tell her the rest.

We’re in the farmhouse kitchen, candles burning low because neither of us wants to go to bed. Tomorrow’s too big. Too heavy. Sleep feels like a waste of the hours we have left before everything changes.

“I was twenty-three when I became Archmage,” I say. “Youngest in history. Everyone thought it was because I was talented.”

“Weren’t you?”

“Sure. But that’s not why.” I turn my mug in my hands.

The tea’s gone cold. Doesn’t matter. “I became Archmage because I was obsessed. I didn’t have friends growing up.

Didn’t have hobbies. Didn’t have anything except magic and the desperate need to be good enough that someone, somewhere, would finally notice me. ”

Mariella doesn’t say anything. Just listens.

“My parents died when I was seven. Plague. I got sent to the Academy because I had nowhere else to go and some teacher noticed I could light candles without matches.” I laugh, but it’s not funny.

“That’s the whole origin story. Dead parents, magic orphan, worked myself half to death trying to fill a hole that couldn’t be filled. ”

“Is that when you met them? The party?”

“Later. I was nineteen, already making a name for myself. Dario was this—” I struggle for words. “This golden kid. Chosen Hero, blessed by the gods, destined to save the world. Everyone loved him. Including me.”

“What was he like? Back then?”

“Charming. Funny. Made you feel like you were the only person in the room.” I set down the mug. “He found me in the Academy library at three in the morning, buried in research about the Demon Lord. Said he’d heard I was the smartest mage in a generation and he needed smart people on his team.”

“And you said yes.”

“I said yes so fast I probably broke some kind of record. Someone wanted me. Someone chose me. That was—” I shake my head. “That was everything. That was the whole world.”

Mariella reaches across the table. Takes my hand.

“The party came together over the next year. Gorath, Sylva, Anton. And Persephone.” Her name still tastes like copper. “She was different. The others wanted to be heroes. She just wanted to help people. Or that’s what I thought.”

“When did you fall in love with her?”

“Instantly. Embarrassingly. She walked into that lecture hall and I forgot how to think.” I squeeze Mariella’s hand.

“I was so young. So stupid. I thought love was this thing that happened to you, like weather. I didn’t understand that real love is something you build. Something you choose, every day.”

“You know that now?”

“I’m learning.”

She smiles. Small. Real.

“We spent five years fighting the Demon Lord’s forces. Five years of battles and close calls and watching each other almost die. By the end, I would have done anything for them. Killed for them. Died for them.” I laugh again. Still not funny. “Turns out dying for them was exactly what they wanted.”

“Why did they do it? Really?”

“Power.” Simple word. Ugly truth. “The Mary Harvest ritual—it lets you steal someone’s magical essence. Split it among multiple recipients. They took my power and used it to become legends. The Legendary Four who defeated the Demon Lord. Immortal. Unstoppable. Famous.”

“And you were just… gone.”

“Erased. They rewrote history. Changed the records. Made it so the Archmage never existed. Just four heroes who did it all themselves.” I pull my hand back.

Need both of them to gesture, apparently.

“You know what the worst part is? It worked. For two hundred years, it worked. Nobody remembered me. Nobody questioned the story. I was just… nothing.”

“You’re not nothing.”

“I know that now.” I look at her. Really look. “But I spent a long time believing I was. That maybe they were right. Maybe I was just a tool they used and discarded. Maybe that’s all I was ever meant to be.”

“Velthar.”

“I know. I know.” I run my hands through my hair.

“I’m not looking for pity. I’m just—tomorrow I go down there and I take back everything they stole.

And part of me is terrified that when I do, I’ll become him again.

The man I was. The obsessed, lonely, desperate kid who would do anything to matter. ”

Mariella stands up. Walks around the table. Sits down next to me, close enough that I can feel her warmth.

“You want to know what I see when I look at you?”

“Probably not.”

“Too bad.” She takes my face in her hands, turns it toward her. “I see a man who makes terrible jokes when he’s uncomfortable. Who pretends he doesn’t care about anything while caring about everything. Who let a seven-year-old put flowers in his hair and wore them all day because she asked.”

“Mira’s very persuasive.”

“Shut up, I’m not done.” She’s smiling now.

“I see a man who eats Granny Thorn’s soup even though it’s awful because he doesn’t want to hurt her feelings.

Who taught Bram how to hold a sword even though he swore he wouldn’t.

Who built ward stones and defensive walls and spent weeks fortifying a village full of strangers because he couldn’t stand to see them defenseless. ”

“That’s just—”

“That’s you. That’s who you are now. Not the Archmage. Not the weapon. Just you.” She leans in. Kisses me softly. “And whatever you were before, whatever you become after tomorrow—this is the man I chose. This is the man I’m staying for.”

I don’t know what to say.

So I kiss her back instead.

We don’t sleep together.

I know, I know. Romantic moment, night before the big battle, all the narrative pieces are in place. But she pulls back first, and I see something in her eyes that looks like not yet and I want this to mean something and let’s survive tomorrow first.

“Rain check?” she says.

“Yeah. Rain check.”

She stands up. Heads for the door. Stops.

“Velthar?”

“Yeah?”

“When this is over—when you’ve beaten them and taken back your power and done whatever you need to do—I want you to know something.” She looks back at me. “I love you. I’ve loved you for weeks. I was just too scared to say it.”

The words hit me like a physical force.

“Mariella—”

“You don’t have to say it back. Not yet. I just needed you to know. Before tomorrow.” She smiles, and it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. “Good night, Velthar.”

She’s gone before I can respond.

I sit alone in the kitchen for a long time. Thinking about what she said. About what it means. About the terrifying, wonderful weight of being loved by someone who knows exactly who you are.

Eventually, I stand up. Walk to the fireplace. Pull off my old wedding ring—I’ve been wearing it on a chain around my neck, couldn’t quite let go—and hold it over the flames.

Two hundred years.

Two hundred years of carrying this. Of letting it mean something. Of believing that what I had with Persephone was real, even after she proved it wasn’t.

“I should have done this centuries ago,” I say to no one.

The ring sits in my palm. Small. Gold. Still warm from being against my skin for months. Before that, it sat in a dungeon vault for two centuries, waiting for me the way everything in that dungeon waited — patient, faithful, loyal in a way its giver never was.

She picked it out. Persephone. Dragged me to six different jewelers in the capital because the first five “didn’t understand the assignment.

” I didn’t know what the assignment was.

She never told me. I just followed her from shop to shop, watching her hold rings up to the light, frowning at imperfections only she could see.

“This one,” she’d said finally, at the sixth shop. A simple gold band. Nothing fancy. “It’s honest. Like you.”

Honest. Like me.

I wonder if she felt anything when she said that. If some part of her knew, even then, that she was buying a ring for a man she was going to help murder. If the word “honest” tasted different in her mouth because she knew she wasn’t.

Doesn’t matter now.

Johnson’s watching from the doorway. He doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t need to. His presence is enough — solid, warm, the only creature in two lifetimes who’s never lied to me. Granted, he’s lied about plenty of other things. But never to me.

Fifty-eight percent. More than half of what they stole, already trickling back. Dario’s probably having trouble sleeping. Persephone’s healing probably takes twice as long. Gorath’s probably bruising easier. Sylva’s probably losing spells she thought she’d mastered.

Good.

But this isn’t about them. Not tonight.

Tonight is about me. About the man I was and the man I’m choosing to be. About a gold ring that meant everything once and means nothing now.

I drop the ring.

Watch it fall into the fire.

Watch the gold start to glow, then melt, then disappear.

Gone.

Finally gone.
