CHAPTER 19 — “Archmage Reborn”
That’s weird to say, I know. But it does.
That particular ozone-and-old-books smell that used to cling to my robes back when I had robes worth clinging to.
Mariella mentioned it once—said I smelled like a library that got struck by lightning.
I told her that was either an insult or the most specific compliment I’d ever received.
She just laughed and stole my bread.
Point is, I’m standing at the entrance to the final floor of a dungeon I apparently built two hundred years ago, and it smells like home. Which is either poetic or deeply sad. Probably both.
Johnson’s already three steps ahead, looking back at me like I’m the slowest human he’s ever had to tolerate.
“I’m savoring the moment.”
You’re procrastinating.
“Those are the same thing.”
They are not.
“You’re a rabbit. What do you know about emotional complexity?”
He turns and walks into the darkness without responding.
Judgmental little bastard.
I follow.
The staircase down is carved with my handwriting.
Not important formulas. Not grand magical theory. Just… notes. Reminders. The kind of marginalia you scribble when you’re working late and your brain starts leaking out your ears.
“Step 47 squeaks. Fix later.”
I step on step 47. It squeaks. I never fixed it.
“If you’re reading this, you forgot to eat again. Go eat something.”
My stomach growls. Past me was an asshole, but an accurate one.
“Persephone’s birthday is next week. Get her something better than another enchanted bookmark. She has twelve.”
I stop walking.
Read that one again.
My handwriting. My reminder. From a version of me who still thought she loved him. Who was probably excited about finding the perfect gift, about seeing her face light up, about all the stupid small moments that make up a life with someone.
I gave her an enchanted locket that year. It would warm when I was thinking about her.
She was wearing it when she held my hand and watched me die.
Probably still warm.
I keep walking.
The vault chamber is exactly what you’d expect from a paranoid Archmage with too much time and not enough therapy.
Massive. Domed. Covered in enough protective enchantments to make a god nervous. The walls are my research notes—two hundred years of magical theory, preserved in crystal, waiting for someone who could read them.
Waiting for me.
And in the center, floating like it’s showing off, is a sphere of pure crystallized mana that hurts to look at directly. My power. My life. Everything they carved out of me while I screamed.
It’s beautiful.
It’s also impatient—I can feel it reaching for me, straining against the containment fields, wanting to come home so badly it’s making the air hum.
“Miss me?” I ask it.
The sphere pulses. Blue-gold-white. The magical equivalent of a dog seeing its owner after a long trip.
“Yeah. I missed you too.”

I read the names.
Five names. Five people who stood beside me. Five people who decided dying wasn’t enough—they wanted everything else too.
My hand hovers over the confirmation.
This is it. Two hundred years of waiting. Two hundred years of being nothing, being no one, being a farmer with bad knees and a weird rabbit and skills like [Weed Identification] that the universe handed out as some kind of cosmic joke.
One button and I get it all back.
One button and they lose everything.
[Y]
Okay so here’s the thing about having your soul crammed back into your body after two centuries:
It hurts.
It hurts a lot.
I’m on my knees—don’t remember falling—and there’s light everywhere, pouring into me through every pore, and my mana channels are screaming because they’re sized for a Level 10 Combat Alchemist and suddenly they’re being asked to handle Archmage-class power.
It’s like trying to pour a river through a garden hose.
The garden hose is my nervous system.
The river doesn’t care.
Johnson’s pressing against me, solid and warm, and I focus on that. On the weight of him. On the smell of his fur. On something real while reality rewrites itself inside my chest.
Memories are flooding back. Not just information—feelings.
The satisfaction of my first successful spell.
The terror of my first real battle. The way Persephone looked in candlelight, the way Dario laughed at my jokes, the way I trusted them so completely that the betrayal broke something fundamental in how I understood people.
I feel that break again.
And then I feel it heal.
Not perfectly. There’s scar tissue. There’ll always be scar tissue. But the wound isn’t fresh anymore. It’s old. It’s mine. And I’m done letting it define me.
Somewhere far away, Dario’s in the middle of saying something boring about grain tariffs.
I know this because I can feel him. Feel the connection between us—the stolen mana that’s been keeping him young and strong and alive for two centuries.
I feel it snap.
Not gently. Not gradually. Snap. Like a rope under too much tension. Like a bone breaking.
He feels it too.
I can tell because suddenly there’s panic flooding through what’s left of the connection. Raw, animal terror. The kind of fear you only feel when something fundamental changes and you don’t know why.
Good.
Suffer.
The absorption takes—I don’t know. Minutes? Hours? Time gets weird when you’re being rebuilt from the inside out.
But eventually it stops.
Eventually I can breathe again.
Eventually I open my eyes and look at my hands and they’re glowing. Soft blue-white light, leaking from my skin like I’m a lantern someone forgot to close.
“Huh,” I say.
Johnson looks at me. You good?
“I think so?” I flex my fingers. The light responds, brightening and dimming with my thoughts. “I think I’m—”
I reach for a spell. Not consciously. Just—reach. The way you reach for a word you’ve known your whole life.
Fire blooms in my palm.
Not Combat Alchemist fire. Not the sad little flames I’ve been nursing for months, carefully rationed and precisely controlled because I couldn’t afford to waste a single drop of mana.
Archmage fire.
The real thing.
It’s white at the core, blue at the edges, and it moves like it’s alive. Like it’s happy to see me. Like it’s been waiting just as long as the vault has.
I close my hand. The fire vanishes. I open it again. The fire returns.
Easy.
Effortless.
Mine.

I stand up.
My body feels different. Not stronger exactly—I’m still in the same flesh, same bones, same farmer’s tan from too many hours in the fields—but more. More present. More real. Like I’ve been looking at the world through a dirty window for months and someone finally cleaned it.
“Johnson.”
He looks at me.
“Let’s go say hello.”
The walk back through the dungeon is surreal.
Every floor I struggled through, every boss that nearly killed me, every trap I had to carefully disarm—I could destroy all of it now with a thought.
The power differential is absurd. It’s like being a kid who was scared of the dark, then growing up and realizing the dark was scared of you the whole time.
I don’t destroy anything. This is my dungeon. I built it. No point wrecking my own work.
But I could.
That’s the difference.
When I step out of the dungeon entrance, the sun’s setting. Golden hour. The light catches the fields just right, makes everything look like a painting. Peaceful. Beautiful.
Mariella’s waiting.
She’s got her arms crossed, hip cocked, the stance she does when she’s been worrying and doesn’t want to admit it. But her expression changes when she sees me.
“Your eyes,” she says.
“What about them?”
“They’re glowing.”
Oh. Right. Probably should have checked a mirror.
“Is that bad?”
“It’s something.” She walks toward me. Slowly at first, then faster. “Did you—is it—”
“Yeah.”
She stops a foot away. Studies my face like she’s looking for someone she recognizes.
“You feel different,” she says.
“I am different.” I reach out. Take her hand. It trembles slightly in mine—or maybe I’m the one trembling. Hard to tell. “I’m me again. The real me. All of me.”
“And them? The people who—”
“They know.” I smile. It probably looks strange with glowing eyes. “They definitely know.”
Three days pass.
Three days of me relearning my own power. Three days of accidentally setting things on fire when I sneeze, or making it rain inside the barn when I dream too vividly, or levitating the breakfast table because I reached for the salt with the wrong kind of intent.
“This is getting ridiculous,” Mariella says, picking eggs off the ceiling.
“I said I was sorry.”
“You’ve said that seven times today. The chickens are traumatized.”
“Chickens don’t have complex emotional responses to—”
“Tell that to Henrietta. She hasn’t laid since Tuesday.”
I don’t have a response to that. Mostly because she’s right. I’ve been a magical disaster area since coming back up.
