CHAPTER 19 — “Archmage Reborn” #3
Not all at once—soldiers don’t work like that—but in waves. First the cavalry, shattered by Johnson’s rampage. Then the eastern flank, crushed against my barricades with nowhere to go. Then the center, watching their comrades fall and deciding this isn’t worth whatever Dario’s paying them.
They run.
Streaming away from the village like water from a broken dam. Some throw down their weapons. Some just turn and sprint. A few of the smarter ones were already edging toward the rear before the rout started.
Two thousand soldiers, and within an hour, the field is empty except for the wounded, the dead, and four people who can’t run.
The Legendary Four.
Surrounded by the wreckage of everything they threw at me.
Looking at me with varying expressions of terror.
“Well,” I say, walking toward them. “That was disappointing. I expected more from the heroes who defeated the Demon Lord.”
Dario snarls. “We defeated the Demon Lord. We—”
“I defeated the Demon Lord.” I stop ten feet away. “You were there. You helped. But the kill shot? The spell that actually ended him? That was me. That was my theory, my research, my power.” I spread my arms. “All you did was take credit.”
“That’s not—”
“Dario.” I cut him off. “I was there. I remember. I remember everything now. Including the part where you convinced everyone else the ritual was necessary. Including the part where you’d been planning it for months.
Including—” I smile. Not nice. “—the part where you started sleeping with my wife before you decided to kill me.”
His face goes white.
“Yeah. She told me. In the vault. She thought I deserved to know.” A lie—she never told me anything—but he doesn’t know that. “Three years, Dario. Three years of looking me in the eye, calling me brother, while you were fucking my wife behind my back.”
“Vel—” Persephone starts.
“Don’t.” I don’t look at her. Can’t. “I’ll get to you.”
Gorath moves first.
Of course he does. He’s the Tank. The frontliner. The one who charges into danger while everyone else hangs back.
He’s also aged fifteen years in two weeks. His movements are slow, stiff, nothing like the unstoppable force I remember. The man who stood by while they carved me apart—reduced to this.
“Stay back!” He raises his shield. “I won’t let you—”
I flick my finger.
His shield rips out of his grip, flies fifty feet, embeds itself in the ground. He stares at his empty hand like he doesn’t understand what just happened.
“You stood there,” I say. “You stood there and you couldn’t even look at me. Just stared at the wall while I screamed.”
“I didn’t have a choice—”
“There’s always a choice.” I walk toward him. He backs up. “You chose to believe Dario’s bullshit. You chose to stand there and let it happen. You chose to take your share of the stolen power and spend two hundred years never questioning whether you earned it.”
“I’m sorry—”
“No, you’re not. You’re scared.” I stop inches from him. Look up at his face—he’s still bigger than me, still broader, still everything a Tank should be. But he’s trembling. “You’re scared because for the first time in two centuries, you’re mortal. You can be hurt. You can be killed.”
“Please—”
“I’m not going to kill you.”
He blinks. “What?”
“I’m not going to kill you,” I repeat. “That would be mercy. Instead, you get to live. You get to grow old. You get to feel every year you stole from yourself catch up, all at once, while you remember what you did to earn them.” I lean in. “That’s your punishment, Gorath. Living with it.”
I turn away.
He falls to his knees behind me.
I don’t look back.
Sylva tries to run.
I’m not surprised. She was always the most pragmatic of the group. The one who calculated odds and made smart bets. She knows she can’t fight me. Knows what’s coming.
So she runs.
Johnson gets there first.
He appears in front of her—Shadow Step, instant, impossible—and she screams. The woman who’s been pretending to be an Archmage for two centuries, screaming at a rabbit.
Former rabbit. Whatever.
“Going somewhere?” I call out.
She turns. Her face is a mess—tears, snot, makeup running. Not beautiful now. Not composed. Just a thief who got caught.
“Please,” she whispers. “Please, I didn’t—I just wanted—”
“You wanted my work.” I walk toward her slowly. Johnson watches her with those silver eyes, making sure she doesn’t bolt again. “My spells. My research. My legacy. You took my spellbook off my cooling corpse and you built your whole career on it.”
“I didn’t mean to—”
“You became the Court Mage. You became famous. Every spell you cast, every magical achievement you claimed, was mine.” I stop in front of her. “Do you even understand any of it? The theory? The principles? Or did you just memorize the formulas like a parrot?”
She doesn’t answer.
Doesn’t have to.
“That’s what I thought.” I hold out my hand. “The spells I created. The ones you stole. I’m taking them back.”
“What—”
I reach into her.
Not physically. Magically. Into the part of her that holds my stolen work. The formulas she memorized. The techniques she copied. The entire fraudulent architecture of her power.
And I pull.
She screams again—different this time, deeper, more real—as two centuries of stolen knowledge rips out of her mind. It flows into me, familiar and foreign all at once. Spells I invented. Research I completed. Ideas that changed the world, that she claimed credit for, coming home.
When it’s done, she collapses.
Just falls. Lands in the mud, gasping, staring at nothing.

“You’re not a mage anymore,” I tell her. “You’re a fraud who got caught. Live with that.”
I step over her.
Dario’s waiting.
Sword drawn. Stance ready. The Hero preparing for his final battle.
It would be impressive if it weren’t so sad.
“You want to duel?” I ask. “Really? That’s how you want to do this?”
“I’m not afraid of you.”
“Yes, you are. I can smell it.” I stop ten feet away. “But sure. Let’s duel. Let’s give you the heroic death you think you deserve.”
He charges.
The Hero’s Blade sings through the air—and I catch it.
Bare hand. No defensive spell. Just… catch it. The edge bites into my palm, draws blood, but I don’t let go. I squeeze, and the legendary metal screams, warps, shatters into a thousand pieces.
Dario stares at his broken weapon.
“You know what the difference is between us?” I ask. “You were always performing. The Hero. The Leader. The Chosen One. Every word, every gesture, calculated for maximum effect. Even now—even here—you’re playing a part.”
I grab his throat.
Lift him off his feet.
“I was never performing. I was just good at magic. That’s all. That’s the whole secret. No destiny. No divine mandate. Just a kid who lost his parents and buried himself in work until he became something extraordinary.”
He’s choking. Clawing at my hand. His face is turning colors.
“You stole that from me. You stole my power, my wife, my name. You rewrote history to make yourself the hero and me nothing at all.” I lean close. “Was it worth it? Two hundred years of playing pretend? Two hundred years of knowing, deep down, that everything you had was stolen?”
He can’t answer. Can barely breathe.
I let go.
He drops, gasping, coughing, curling into a ball in the mud.

“I’m not going to kill you,” I say. “That would make you a martyr. Instead, you get to live. You get to watch your empire crumble. You get to explain to your people that the great hero is a fraud, a thief, a man who murdered his best friend for power.”
I crouch down. Meet his eyes.
“Every day, for the rest of your short, mortal, miserable life—you’re going to remember that I came back. That I survived. That everything you built on my corpse is nothing.” I smile. “That’s your punishment, Dario. Not death. Truth.”
I stand up.
Walk away.
Behind me, the Emperor of the Realm lies in the mud, weeping.
Persephone is last.
She’s on her knees. Hasn’t moved since this started. Just watched everything fall apart around her—her lover, her allies, her whole world—without saying a word.
She’s aged twenty years in the last hour. The divine beauty is gone. The golden light is gone. She’s just a woman now. An old woman who used to be something more.
I stop in front of her.
For a long moment, neither of us speaks.
“I loved you,” she says finally. Quiet. Broken. “I know you don’t believe me. I know you think it was all a lie. But I loved you, Vel. Really loved you.”
“I know.”
She looks up. Surprised.
