CHAPTER 19 — “Archmage Reborn” #4
“I know you loved me,” I repeat. “That’s what made it worse. You loved me and you killed me anyway. You loved me and you watched me die. You loved me and you spent two hundred years living on my stolen power without ever questioning if it was wrong.”
“I questioned. Every day. Every single day, I—”
“But you didn’t stop. You didn’t try to undo it. You didn’t spend two centuries looking for a way to bring me back.” I crouch down to her level. “You moved on. You married Dario. You became the Empress, the Healer, the Divine Consort. You built a whole new life on my grave.”
“I didn’t know how to fix it—”
“You didn’t try.”
Silence.
She’s crying. Of course she’s crying. She always cried beautifully. Even now, aged and broken, the tears look perfect on her face.
I used to want to wipe those tears away.
Now I just feel tired.
“I could kill you,” I say. “Part of me wants to. The part that remembers your hand in mine while I bled out. The part that remembers your voice saying ‘it’s better this way’ while I screamed.”
She flinches.
“But I’m not going to. Because you know what? I’m done letting you matter. I’m done carrying you around in my chest like a wound that won’t heal.”
I stand up.
“Live, Persephone. Grow old. Grow older. Feel every year you stole catch up with you. And every morning, when you look in the mirror and see what you’ve become—remember that I came back. That I found someone else. That I’m happy.”
“Vel—”
“That’s your punishment.” I turn away. “Watching me move on.”

The village fights back.
Not like soldiers. Not like heroes. Like people who’ve been pushed to the edge and decided they’d rather die standing than live on their knees.
Garrett moves through the chaos like he’s twenty years younger, sword singing in arcs that carve through soldiers three at a time.
I’d forgotten what an S-rank looks like when they stop holding back.
He takes a sword through the shoulder and doesn’t even slow down, just pivots around the blade and puts its owner on the ground.
Bram’s at the cellar door, exactly where I told him to be. Two soldiers find him. The first one laughs — big Imperial veteran, full armor, facing a kid with a hand-me-down sword.
Bram drops into the stance I taught him. Weight low. Eyes up. Breathing steady.
The soldier swings. Bram doesn’t block — he steps, the way I drilled into him a hundred times. The blade misses by an inch. Bram’s counter doesn’t miss at all.
The second soldier runs.
“I hit someone!” Bram shouts, equal parts terror and joy. “Did you see that? I actually HIT someone!”
“Focus, Bram!”
“Right! Focusing! Very focused!”
Granny Thorn is on her porch with a cup of tea and absolutely no fear. Three soldiers charge her cottage. Her eyes glow green — hedge-witch green, the old magic, the kind the System doesn’t track because it predates the framework.
Their armor rusts. Not slowly. Fast. Straps dissolve. Plates fall away. Suddenly they’re standing there in their underwear, holding swords that are crumbling to powder.
“Boys,” Granny Thorn says, sipping her tea. “You picked the wrong village.”
They run.
Johnson is everywhere. Silver fur, red blood, soldiers screaming and horses bolting. He’s not killing most of them. Just terrorizing. A bite here. A shadow-step there. The psychological warfare of a wolf-sized predator that can teleport.
One cavalry officer fires an arrow at him. Johnson catches it in his teeth, spits it out, and gives the officer a look that probably shortened his lifespan by ten years through pure stress.
And Mariella.
