Chapter 14 Clean Break
After finally cutting Mu Jinci out of my life, I sold the marital home, changed my phone number, blocked her everywhere, and bought a new place on the east side.
I had never felt this light.
Friends heard about the divorce and dragged me out to a bar to celebrate.
We drank until the early hours. I stumbled home, half-drunk.
An unknown number rang three times in a row.
When it rang again, I picked up.
“Su Yueming, you’ve gone too far—actually blocking me?!”
“How is it you again?”
I loosened my tie and hung up.
After a cold shower to sober up, the phone rang once more.
I answered without checking.
“Mu Jinci, are you done yet?”
“Yueming, it’s me.”
Chen Yi’s voice.
I rubbed my temple.
“What do you want?”
“Well… Mu Jinci’s mom asked you to come over for dinner tomorrow. She called you earlier, you hung up on her, and now she’s angry and doesn’t want to speak to you. She asked me to pass the message.”
She still hadn’t told her mother we were divorced?
“I have nothing to do with Mu Jinci anymore. There’s no need for that dinner. Put her on—I’ll tell her myself.”
“Okay…”
I heard him hand over the phone.
“Mu Jinci, Su Yueming wants to talk to you…”
“What’s there to talk about? He thinks a phone apology will fix everything? I’m not answering!”
Her proud voice carried through.
“Mu Jinci?”
Silence.
She hadn’t hung up.
I kept going.
“I just want to make this clear. We’re done. Stop harassing me—it’s bothering me. If you keep it up, I won’t hesitate to call the police.”
I paused, then added,
“Being your man was exhausting. I’m done. Let’s part on decent terms.”
“Su Yueming! What the hell do you mean? You’re drawing a line now? Who do you think you are? You’ve grown some spine, talking to me like this? Worry more about how you’ll beg on your knees when you want me back!”
The line went dead.
Same old Mu Jinci.
I poured myself a glass of water to kill the alcohol taste.
The night passed just like that.
