Chapter 13 I Owe You Nothing
The next day, Mu Jinci was late again.
She showed up with Chen Yi in tow.
“Su Yueming, if you’ve come to your senses and regret this, apologize right now. I might still give you a chance to make it right.”
“Cut the nonsense. Let’s go in.”
I had zero interest in listening to more of her high-and-mighty speech. I grabbed her arm and pulled her straight to the counter.
Mu Jinci kept a dark expression the entire time.
We followed the staff through the procedure. When we stepped out of the registry office, she was still running her mouth.
“Su Yueming, you’re getting bolder and bolder. Have I been too soft on you?”
“Fine, you wanted the divorce—I gave it to you. But when you come crawling back in a few days begging me, I won’t take you back.”
“Have you finished?”
I looked at her, cold and flat.
“…”
She froze, startled by my tone.
“When you asked me out, I told you to think carefully. You swore you really liked me. Fine. I dated you. I married you. I gave you everything I had. I did everything a husband is supposed to do. I never asked for anything in return—because we were married, because we were supposed to be one. All I wanted was for us to be happy. And you—what did you give me?”
I said it word by word, letting every buried grievance spill out.
Mu Jinci narrowed her eyes. Something shifted behind them.
I sighed and looked at her one last time.
“Mu Jinci, I don’t owe you anything.”
I turned and walked away without looking back.
She stood rooted to the spot. Chen Yi put a hand on her shoulder.
“Mu Jinci, you still have me…”
She didn’t answer. She just stared after me, lost in whatever was going through her head.
