Chapter 4 No Sunlight Left

I moved into the small courtyard house I had bought in advance in Yuncheng.

I had barely finished settling in when I got a call from the airline.

They said Mianmian had been startled during transport and died.

"We're sorry, Ms. Xin Xin. Regarding the pet, we will cover all losses for you."

On the other end was the usual standardized sincerity and apology of customer service.

My eyes went blank for a moment. Then I spoke.

"Then please find it a place with plenty of sun. It liked basking in the sunlight."

Maybe they had not expected me to be so calm. There were a few seconds of silence before the reply came.

"Alright, Ms. Xin Xin."

I hung up and numbly searched through the suitcase, delivery boxes, and storage bags for something to ease the pain.

When I had carried the suitcase in earlier, I had twisted my waist.

I finally found a medicated patch and was about to put it on in front of the dressing mirror when a sudden bang sounded in the house, followed by a Power Outage.

In the total dark, I could not see a thing.

I instinctively reached for something to hold onto and accidentally smashed something.

The sound of shattering stretched endlessly through the silent night.

The string pulled tight in my mind finally snapped.

I cried out loud.

The broken things were just like my ruined life.

My mother did not love me. My best friend did not love me. My husband did not love me either.

Even Mianmian, the only one loyal to me, had left me like this.

I could not understand why it was like this—why everyone treated me this way.

They told me to think of the bigger picture, of Zhou Group's future, of Zhou Yang's situation, of every kind of dignity.

But no one ever cared what happened to me.

Whether I was in pain, sad, hurt, or wronged.

Ever since Ruoyu came back to the country, everything had fallen apart. Everything.
