Chapter 6

Outside Pressures and Temptations

A Shift in the Morning Light

Nate woke to the soft weight of Claire beside him, her body molded against his as the golden morning light spilled through the windows.

The air was still, the house silent except for the occasional creak of the wooden floors.

He lay still, reluctant to move, reluctant to disturb the peace she brought to his otherwise chaotic life.

Last night had been different. It wasn’t just the physical connection—it was something deeper, something unspoken yet undeniable.

He turned his head slightly, watching as Claire stirred. Her lashes fluttered against her cheek before she blinked up at him, a slow, sleepy smile spreading across her lips. His chest tightened at the sight. She was beautiful in the quiet of the morning, without pretense, without barriers.

“Morning,” she murmured, stretching slightly.

He leaned in, brushing a kiss over her temple, then her lips. It was slow, lingering—more than just a greeting. A silent acknowledgment of everything that had shifted between them. But before the moment could deepen, the sharp buzz of his phone shattered the stillness.

Nate groaned, reluctantly reaching for it. His stomach clenched the second he saw the name flashing on the screen—Melanie.

The Ghosts of the Past Resurface

Claire noticed the shift instantly. “Who is it?” she asked softly.

He hesitated before answering, exhaling through his nose. “Melanie.”

Silence stretched between them. Claire pushed herself up slightly, watching him, waiting for his reaction. Nate hadn’t told her much about his ex-wife—just that she had walked away, leaving him to raise Leo alone. And that she had made choices that proved she wasn’t cut out for motherhood.

He finally answered. “What do you want, Melanie?” His voice was clipped and controlled, but Claire could hear the barely restrained frustration underneath.

Melanie’s voice came through the phone, saccharine and smooth. “Nate, darling. Can’t I call just to say hello?”

His grip tightened on the phone. “Cut the crap. What do you want?”

She sighed theatrically. “I’m back in town. And I want to see Leo.”

Nate’s expression darkened. Claire could practically feel the rage simmering beneath his skin. “You lost that right a long time ago.”

Claire’s stomach twisted as she watched the man beside her struggle to contain his emotions. There was pain in his eyes—old wounds reopening with just a few words.

“Things change, Nate,” Melanie continued smoothly. “I’ve changed.”

He scoffed. “Right.”

He hung up abruptly, jaw tight as he stared at the phone. Claire didn’t say anything, just reached for his hand, squeezing it. He didn’t pull away.

For a moment, he let out a breath and looked past Claire, his mind lost in memories.

Melanie had always been striking, the kind of beauty that turned heads the moment she entered a room.

It had been part of what drew him to her in the first place—the confidence, the allure, the effortless way she carried herself.

Their relationship had been passionate, built on equal parts desire and destruction.

At one time, their chemistry had been undeniable, the physical side of their marriage intense in ways he hadn’t experienced before or since.

For a while, he had missed that. Missed the fire, the easy way they used to fit together.

But any nostalgia he had once harbored for Melanie had long since faded.

That side of his life, however exhilarating, had come at a cost. And ultimately, he had been relieved to be free of it.

Free of her. Moving back to Oak Valley had been the best decision he’d made—not just for himself, but for Leo.

Now, she was back, and he wasn’t sure what she wanted. But he knew better than to trust her intentions.

Claire’s Own Crossroads

Later that morning, Claire sat at the kitchen counter, scrolling through her emails. Her breath caught at a subject line she hadn’t expected: “Exciting Opportunity in NYC.”

Her old boss from the hedge fund she’d worked for before had reached out.

The firm, once on the brink of collapse, had managed to claw its way out of bankruptcy and was now roaring back with a vengeance.

They had secured new investors, brought in some of the most well-known financial leaders in the industry, and were aggressively expanding.

It wasn’t just a revival—it was a reinvention.

The offer was prestigious. A senior financial analyst position, overseeing multi-million-dollar portfolios, working alongside some of the best minds in finance.

The salary alone was staggering, nearly double what she had made before, but that wasn’t all.

The company was offering her a fully paid luxury apartment in Trump Tower, just blocks from her potential office.

The email ended with a clear ultimatum: One week to take it or leave it.

She read the email twice, her heart pounding. This was her dream job. Or at least, it had been.

“What’s that?” Nate’s voice startled her.

She looked up to find him standing at the counter, his coffee in hand, watching her carefully.

She swallowed. “A job offer.”

His brows furrowed. “Where?”

She hesitated. “New York.”

Nate set his coffee down a little too hard. “Are you considering it?”

“I don’t know,” she admitted, and it was the truth. A week ago, she would have jumped at the opportunity. Now, with Leo, with Nate—it didn’t feel so simple.

Confessions and Realizations

They sat across from each other, the weight of unspoken words thick between them.

“This is what you’ve wanted,” Nate finally said, his voice steady but distant. “Right?”

Claire stared down at the table. “I thought so.”

A long pause stretched before Nate spoke again, softer this time. “Would you leave if I asked you to stay?”

Her heart clenched. He looked vulnerable in a way she’d never seen before.

“Nate…” she hesitated. “It’s not that simple.”

“I know,” he said quickly, rubbing a hand over his face. “I just—I don’t want you to make a decision you’ll regret.”

She exhaled. “And I don’t want to be a decision you regret.”

Taking a Breath

They both sat in silence for a moment longer, the weight of everything between them pressing down. Finally, Claire let out a slow breath and reached for her coffee. "We have a lot to think about."

Nate nodded, running a hand through his hair. "Yeah. But let's not rush anything. We said we’d take this slow."

Claire offered a small, wry smile. "Slow is proving to be harder than I expected."

"Tell me about it," Nate muttered, shaking his head. "But we'll figure it out. One step at a time."

She nodded, though her mind still whirled with possibilities. A week to make a decision. A week to decide the future. It felt impossible, but she had no choice but to face it head-on.

With an unspoken understanding, they both got up from the kitchen table and went their separate ways to prepare for the day.

Nate disappeared into his room while Claire slipped into hers, taking a moment to collect herself.

She stepped into the shower, letting the hot water loosen the knots in her shoulders.

No matter what choice she made, she needed to think clearly.

Dressed and refreshed, Claire fell into her usual morning routine. She got Leo up, helped him get dressed, and ensured he ate before sending him to play in his room. The familiarity of it grounded her, offering a small reprieve from the uncertainty swirling in her head.

Just as she finished tidying up the kitchen, a sharp knock at the front door interrupted the quiet.

Melanie’s Arrival—A Storm Brewing

Nate stiffened, his expression hardening. Claire followed as he opened the door.

Melanie stood there, perfectly put together, her blonde hair cascading in perfect waves over her shoulders. Her eyes, sharp and calculating, flicked over Nate before settling on Claire. A slow, knowing smirk curved her lips.

“You’re looking well,” she purred.

Nate didn’t move. “What are you doing here?” His voice was ice.

She sighed, feigning disappointment. “Is that really how you greet your ex-wife?”

Claire crossed her arms, shifting closer to Nate. “What do you want, Melanie?”

Melanie’s gaze slid to Claire, then back to Nate. “We need to talk. About Leo.”

Claire felt her stomach twist. She didn’t trust this woman.

“What about him?” Nate’s voice was tight.

“I want to be part of his life again.”

Nate’s laugh was humorless. “You had that chance years ago.”

Melanie tilted her head, her expression unreadable. “I’ve changed,” she said smoothly. “And I have a lawyer who agrees.”

Silence.

Claire felt the air shift. Melanie wasn’t just asking—she was threatening legal action.

Nate’s hands clenched into fists. “You’re not taking my son from me.”

Melanie’s lips curled into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “We’ll see.”

Claire’s stomach clenched. She glanced at Nate, but his attention was locked on Melanie, his body taut with restrained anger. She didn’t want to leave him alone with her, but Leo was still in his room, and she needed to check on him.

“I’ll be right back,” Claire murmured, touching Nate’s arm lightly before slipping away.

The moment Claire was gone, Melanie stood and turned away from Nate, unbuttoning her blouse with slow, deliberate movements.

“You remember what we had, don’t you?” she murmured over her shoulder.

When she turned back around, she wore nothing beneath the silk fabric, her full, perfect breasts exposed. Her expression was coy, confident. “Come on, Nate. You can’t tell me you don’t miss this.”

Nate’s stomach churned with disgust, but before he could react, Melanie dropped gracefully to her knees before him, placing a hand on his thigh, her fingers trailing up with practiced ease.

“I could remind you of how good it was,” she whispered. “One last time.”

The heat of her touch sent a spike of anger through him. Nate grabbed her wrist in a bruising grip and yanked her up to her feet.

“Button up and get the hell out of my house,” he growled, his voice low, dangerous.

Melanie’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second before she recovered, slowly fixing her blouse as if nothing had happened. “Suit yourself.”

Just as she turned to leave, Claire stepped back into the room. Her gaze flicked between the two of them, her brow furrowing slightly at the tension in the air.

“Everything okay?” she asked, her voice cautious.

Melanie smiled, brushing past Claire toward the door. “Oh, just catching up.” She paused in the doorway, looking back at Nate. “I’ll be in touch.”

Claire turned back to Nate as the door clicked behind her, sensing something unspoken between them. He stood rigid, his fists still clenched at his sides, his jaw tight.

“What just happened?” she asked, frowning.

Nate exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. “Nothing good.”

As the weight of what just happened settled over them, neither knew the next move.
