Chapter 7

Emotional Turmoil and a Turning Point

The weight of Melanie’s visit lingered in the air like an unshakable storm cloud.

Nate’s mind was tangled in conflicting emotions.

Seeing her again had been like opening a door to the past he thought he had sealed shut.

Melanie had always known how to use her body to get what she wanted, and yesterday had been no exception.

For a brief moment, when she had dropped to her knees in front of him, it had reminded him of the way things used to be.

Melanie had the kind of beauty that turned heads wherever she went—long, golden-blonde hair, a body sculpted like something out of a fantasy, and a sexual confidence that had once made it impossible for him to resist her.

She had loved giving herself to him in ways most women wouldn’t, dropping to her knees at a moment’s notice, eager to please.

He could still remember the way she used to look up at him with those sultry eyes, licking and sucking, swallowing every drop with a satisfied hum.

Sometimes, she would even let him finish on her face just to see the raw hunger in his gaze.

But all of that pleasure had been fleeting, an illusion that shattered the moment life got complicated.

The same woman who had made him feel like a king in the bedroom had also been the one to push him away when he needed her most. When he left the Navy and struggled to find balance, when life wasn’t just wild passion and luxury, she had turned cold.

And worst of all, she had walked away from Leo without so much as a second thought.

That betrayal cut deeper than any moment of pleasure he had shared with her.

The memories of her touch, her body, her eagerness—they meant nothing in the face of the abandonment he and Leo had suffered.

Now, she was back, and no amount of seductive glances or whispered temptations would change what she had done.

The anger inside him burned hotter than any lingering desire.

Seeing Claire with Leo that morning had only reinforced it—Melanie had never been capable of that kind of love.

On the other hand, Claire had stepped in and given Leo everything Melanie never could.

And that made his fear of losing her all the more suffocating.

Claire could feel it in the way Nate barely spoke that morning, in the way he moved through the house as if burdened by thoughts too heavy to share.

The looming decision about her job offer added another layer of tension, thickening the silence between them.

She busied herself with Leo, trying to distract herself from the gnawing unease in her stomach.

Wanting to break away from the tension inside the house, she took Leo outside to the spacious yard where Nate had built a special playground just for him.

The sun was warm on her skin, the scent of freshly cut grass lingering in the air.

Birds chirped in the distance, their melodies intertwining with Leo’s laughter as he ran toward the swings.

Claire smiled as she helped him climb onto the swing, pushing him gently as he giggled, his tiny legs excitedly kicking the air. "Higher, Claire! Higher!" he squealed.

She chuckled, obliging him, watching as his face lit up joyfully. "You’re going to touch the sky soon, buddy!"

Nate stood inside, leaning against the window frame, watching them.

His chest tightened at the sight of Claire with Leo.

The way she so effortlessly fit into their lives, the way she made his son laugh—made him feel safe—it did something to him.

He had built that playground for Leo, hoping to bring him happiness, but Claire had turned it into something more than just a set of swings and slides. She had made it feel like home.

For a brief moment, he imagined a life where she never left. A life where this was permanent.

Nate sat in his office, staring at a pile of documents he had no intention of reading. His mind wasn’t in his work—it was with Claire. The thought of her leaving left a hollowness in his chest he hadn’t felt in years, one he wasn’t ready to confront.

He let himself imagine it—what life would be like if Claire stayed.

Waking up in the morning to find her beside him, her sleepy smile the first thing he’d see.

The way she’d hum softly to herself while making breakfast, Leo chattering excitedly at her side.

Nights spent curled up on the couch, her head resting on his shoulder, the feeling of her warmth against him as they talked about their day.

Having someone he could trust, someone who challenged him in the best ways—not just a partner in life, but a partner in every sense.

He could picture them discussing business and financial strategies, bouncing ideas off each other because Claire was sharp and brilliant, and he’d never had a woman he could truly talk to like that.

And most of all, he saw love—real love. Not the fleeting, conditional kind he had known with Melanie, but something deeper.

Claire didn’t care about his wealth or his name.

She cared about him. And that realization made the thought of her leaving almost unbearable.

He imagined weekend mornings with Claire and Leo, the three of them eating breakfast together, laughter filling the kitchen as Leo talked about dinosaurs and Claire playfully teased him.

He thought about coming home after a business trip to find her there, not because she had to be, but because she wanted to be.

The comfort of knowing he wasn’t alone anymore, that he had someone to share his life with—not just a woman passing through, but a real partner.

Someone who saw him for more than his name, for more than his money, for more than the reputation he’d built.

With Claire, there was something real. Something he hadn’t dared to hope for again.

But was it enough to ask her to stay, to risk everything, and to let her know just how much he wanted her in his life? Or would she walk away and take this newfound warmth with her?

The conversation with Claire replayed in his head, each word cutting more profound than the last. He wanted to tell her to stay.

He wanted to ask her to choose him, Leo, and this life they had somehow built together.

But what if she regretted it? What if she resented him for not pushing her toward her dream?

His marriage to Melanie had been a lesson in love’s impermanence.

He had given everything to that relationship, and in the end, it hadn’t been enough.

He had promised himself he would never put his heart in a position to be broken like that again.

And yet, here he was, watching Claire slip through his fingers because he was too scared to hold on.

Claire lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to find sleep.

Her mind spun with possibilities, every thought pulling her between two very different futures.

She had spent her whole life believing she knew what she wanted.

A prestigious career, financial security, and the kind of success she had worked so hard for.

And now, here she was, standing on the edge of everything she had ever dreamed of, and all she could think about was what she might be leaving behind.

She imagined waking up in the morning with Nate beside her, his strong arms wrapped around her, his presence warm and steady.

The quiet intimacy of shared mornings, of knowing she belonged there.

Cooking breakfast while Leo sat at the table, chattering about his latest fascination, looking up at her with adoration in his eyes.

A real home, not just a place to sleep, but a life filled with love, laughter, and purpose.

She could picture lazy weekend trips, the three of them driving out to explore new places, Nate’s hand resting on her knee as Leo chattered excitedly in the back seat.

She imagined nights wrapped in Nate’s arms, whispering about their day, about their dreams, about the life they could build together.

A love that was deep and unwavering, one that wasn’t based on convenience or fleeting passion but on something real.

And Leo—he already felt like hers in so many ways. The way he reached for her hand, looked for her when he was uncertain and curled up in her lap when he was sleepy. Could she really walk away from that? Could she walk away from the only family she had ever truly wanted?

But what if she stayed and it all fell apart?

What if Nate pushed her away? What if he never truly let her in?

The fear gnawed at her, making her stomach twist. She had spent her life being independent, never depending on anyone but herself.

Could she take the risk of giving herself entirely to someone else? Him

She rolled onto her side, staring at the space beside her. She wanted this—wanted them. But was love enough to take this giant leap?

As exhaustion finally began to take over, one thought lingered in her mind—what if leaving wasn’t the right choice? What if the life she had always wanted was right here, waiting for her to choose it?

The next morning, the tension in the house was thick, but life had to continue.

Claire moved about the kitchen, making breakfast, while Leo sat at the counter, chattering about his dream.

Nate leaned against the doorway, watching her move, the familiar scent of coffee filling the space.

For a brief moment, it felt normal—like they were a family, like nothing had changed.

She slid a plate of eggs and toast in front of Leo, ruffling his hair as he beamed up at her.

"Thanks, Claire!" he chirped before eagerly digging in.

Nate sat down at the table, his gaze flicking to Claire as she set a cup of coffee in front of him.

Their fingers brushed for a second, sending a jolt of awareness through him.

They hadn’t talked much since the night before, but he knew the conversation wasn’t over—it was just waiting beneath the surface, ready to be addressed.

"You okay?" she asked softly, meeting his eyes.

"Yeah." It was a lie, and she knew it, but she didn’t push. Instead, she sat across from him, sipping her own coffee as Leo happily munched on his breakfast. For a few minutes, they existed in that quiet, almost peaceful moment, and the uncertainty pushed to the back of their minds.

Then Nate’s phone rang.

As a moment of calm settled between them, Nate’s phone buzzed. He frowned, glancing at the screen. His entire body stiffened.

“Who is it?” Claire asked, sensing his shift.

He exhaled, jaw tightening. “My lawyer. About Melanie.”

Claire’s stomach twisted. Whatever peace they had found was slipping away again.

“What now?” she murmured.

Nate met her gaze, and she saw fear in his eyes for the first time in a long time.

“She’s making her move.”

A heavy silence filled the room. This wasn’t over. Not even close.
