Chapter 8

A Romantic Escape and a Defining Moment

The morning started with a lingering tension, but Nate barely had time to dwell on it before his phone rang. Claire watched as he answered, his brows furrowing slightly. She stood near the counter, pouring herself a coffee, her ears unconsciously tuned into his conversation.

Then his expression changed, relief flooding his features as he exhaled deeply.

“She’s out,” he said, setting the phone down.

Claire turned to face him fully. “Melanie?”

Nate nodded. “My lawyer just confirmed it. She was bluffing. She’s withdrawn any claim to Leo, and there’s no legal standing for her to come after custody or visitation.”

For a moment, Claire processed the words, feeling the same weight lift that she saw in Nate’s shoulders. It was over. Melanie was truly out of the picture. No threats, no manipulations. Just... gone.

“That’s… that’s great news.”

Nate didn’t respond right away. His gaze flicked to her, and something shifted behind his eyes—something determined. Then, before she could say anything else, he took a step closer.

“Come away with me,” he said suddenly. “Just us. Let’s get out of here.”

Claire blinked. “What?”

“A trip,” he clarified. “Somewhere secluded, away from everything. No stress, no pressure. Just you and me.”

Her breath caught. “Nate, I—”

“You need it. We need it,” he said, his voice firm but soft. “No distractions. No phone calls. Just us figuring out what this is.”

A getaway. The idea was tempting, more than she wanted to admit. And when she looked into Nate’s eyes, she knew—this wasn’t just about fun. This was about them. About giving themselves the space to see if what they had was real.

After a pause, she nodded. “Okay.”

Claire arranged for Leo to stay with her father, who, sensing the importance of the trip, reassured her with a knowing smile. “Go. You deserve this.”

Meanwhile, Nate made the arrangements. When he did something, he did it big, and this was no exception.

Their destination? A luxurious private resort tucked away in the cliffs of a sun-drenched island, with breathtaking ocean views and seclusion that guaranteed no interruptions.

The moment they arrived, Claire felt transported. The villa was a dream—floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the endless blue horizon, a private infinity pool shimmering under the afternoon sun, and a warm ocean breeze drifting through sheer linen curtains.

A wooden deck stretched out beyond their suite, lined with cushioned lounge chairs that invited them to sit, relax, and simply be. Claire stepped out, inhaling deeply, letting the salty sea air fill her lungs. Everything about this place screamed escape, a break from reality.

Nate watched her take it all in, a small smile playing on his lips. “I wanted you to have somewhere to breathe,” he said quietly. “No pressure. Just us.”

Claire turned to him, something warm blooming in her chest. “Thank you,” she said, meaning it.

She wasn’t sure what she expected from this trip, but anticipation coiled low in her belly as she stood there, looking at him in this paradise.

That evening, they dressed for dinner. The resort’s restaurant was designed for intimacy—candlelit tables perched on the edge of a stone terrace, the ocean stretching endlessly below them.

Claire wore a flowing dress that hugged her curves in all the right places, and from the way Nate’s eyes darkened when he saw her, she knew he approved.

“You’re beautiful,” he murmured, his voice rougher than usual.

Her pulse fluttered. “You clean up well yourself.”

They settled into their table, and for a while, the conversation was easy. They talked about everything—life, dreams, memories. But beneath every word was an unspoken promise, a slow burn that ignited with each lingering glance, each brush of fingertips.

The tension between them crackled like a live wire, growing heavier with every passing second. Their meal stretched on, full of teasing smiles and stolen touches, the air between them thick with something unspoken but impossible to ignore.

As the plates were cleared, Claire leaned back, running her finger along the rim of her wineglass. She looked up at Nate, her expression more open, more vulnerable than before. “I don’t want to think tonight,” she said, her voice quiet but firm. “I just want to feel.”

Nate’s jaw clenched, his eyes darkening. He didn’t answer right away, but when he did, his voice was deep and steady. “Then let’s get out of here.”

Back in their suite, the air was thick with anticipation. Nate wasted no time. The moment the door shut behind them, he turned to her, his hands finding her waist, pulling her flush against him. She let out a soft gasp as his lips grazed her neck, heat rolling off him in waves.

Her hands slipped beneath his jacket, pushing it from his shoulders, desperate to feel him, to erase the space between them.

They moved in sync, shedding layers, unraveling each other with slow, deliberate touches. Every kiss, every whisper, every lingering caress built the intensity between them until there was nothing left but sensation.

Outside, the waves crashed against the cliffs, but inside, it was just them, lost in each other, in the moment, in everything they had been holding back.
