Chapter 9
An Unexpected Surprise
The morning after their return from the trip, Claire awoke feeling drained. It wasn’t just the exhaustion from travel; something deeper, heavier, clung to her. She rolled onto her side, watching Nate’s steady breathing beside her, his presence a comfort she wasn’t ready to admit she needed.
A dull headache pulsed behind her eyes as she slowly got out of bed. She dismissed it as jet lag, brushing off the dizziness that followed as she padded into the bathroom. She caught sight of herself in the mirror—her skin was paler than usual, her eyes shadowed with fatigue.
She turned on the sink, splashing cold water over her face before heading downstairs. The smell of coffee brewing filled the air, and Nate stood by the kitchen island, already dressed, his hair still damp from a shower. He glanced up at her, brows knitting together.
“You okay?” he asked.
Claire managed a small smile. “Just tired.”
He studied her, skepticism flickering in his dark eyes, but he didn’t push. Instead, he handed her a cup of coffee and pressed a quick kiss to her temple before heading into his office. She sat at the counter, staring at the coffee, her stomach churning at the thought of drinking it.
That was odd. She loved coffee.
Shaking it off, she forced herself to take a sip, but the moment the liquid hit her tongue, nausea rolled through her. She barely made it to the bathroom before her stomach revolted, emptying itself into the toilet.
She sat back on her heels breathlessly, gripping the counter's edge for stability.
What the hell?
This had happened yesterday too, and the day before that. She had brushed it off as travel sickness, exhaustion from the trip. But now, unease curled in her stomach for an entirely different reason.
Her period was late.
Her hands trembled as she reached for her phone, calculating the days in her head. She was always regular, always predictable. But this time? This time, she was more than a week late.
She swallowed hard.
No. It was stress. It had to be.
Still, the gnawing thought wouldn’t leave her alone.
She needed to know.
Claire wiped her mouth and sat back against the cool tile wall, her hands trembling.
She needed answers, and she needed them now.
Pushing herself up, she rinsed her mouth and splashed water over her face before heading toward the bedroom.
She grabbed her purse, sliding on her shoes with a new determination.
She drove to the nearest pharmacy, her heart pounding the entire way.
Every aisle she passed seemed to blur together until she finally found the shelf she was looking for.
Her hands hovered over the different boxes, her stomach twisting as she realized this wasn’t just about taking a test. It was about her future, about everything she had slowly started to accept in her life.
Grabbing the test, she made her way to the cashier, barely registering the transaction before heading back home. She clutched the bag to her chest as she walked inside, feeling as if she had just crossed an invisible threshold.
Sitting on the closed toilet lid, her heart hammering against her ribs. The pregnancy test lay on the counter, its digital screen dark and unyielding as the seconds ticked by.
Breathe. Just breathe.
She had never expected to be here, in this position. She had always been cautious, responsible. And yet, here she was, waiting for an answer that could change everything.
The bathroom felt impossibly small, the walls closing in as she stared at the test. Then, as if in slow motion, the result appeared.
Positive.
The air left her lungs.
Her mind spun, racing between shock, fear, and something unexpected—an aching, tentative joy.
What did this mean for her? For them? She had made her decision to stay with Nate before she ever suspected she was pregnant.
She had accepted that her life was no longer just about a career in New York or a carefully laid-out plan.
Her life was here, with Nate and Leo. And now, this baby—this unexpected miracle—only solidified that choice in a way she hadn’t anticipated.
It was terrifying and exhilarating all at once.
A baby meant change, permanence, and responsibilities she hadn’t expected to take on so soon.
But hadn’t she already fallen in love with the life she was building?
With the home she had made for herself here, the people who had filled her heart in ways she never imagined possible?
Still, there was a nagging voice of uncertainty. Would Nate feel the same? Would he see this as a blessing or as something neither of them was ready for? That fear kept her frozen, staring at the test as the reality of it settled into her bones.
A baby. Nate’s baby.
Her hand drifted to her stomach, pressing lightly as if she could already feel the life growing inside her. A thousand thoughts flooded her mind.
How would Nate react? Would he be happy? Or would this be too much, too fast?
She exhaled shakily, setting the test down with careful precision. She needed time to process this before she told him.
For the rest of the day, Claire found herself watching Nate more than usual, studying him in a way she hadn’t before. He was attentive, affectionate, but he also carried the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, always thinking ahead, always calculating.
She thought about Leo, about how much he adored his father, how Nate had embraced being a single dad despite everything. And she thought about how much love Nate had shown her since the moment she had stepped into his life.
Would he see this baby as a gift? Or as a burden?
That night, as they settled into bed, Claire lay stiff beside him, her mind churning. She had never been good at keeping secrets, especially not ones this big.
Taking a deep breath, she turned to him.
“Nate.”
He glanced at her, immediately sensing the weight in her voice. “What is it?”
She hesitated, nerves clawing at her throat. Then she just said it.
“I’m pregnant.”
For a moment, time seemed to stop.
Nate’s face went still, unreadable. His eyes flicked to hers, searching, as if waiting for her to say she was joking.
When she didn’t, his breath left him in a sharp exhale. “You’re… you’re sure?”
Claire nodded, gripping the sheets beneath her. “I took a test today.”
Silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken emotions. Then, to her shock, his lips parted into a slow, disbelieving smile.
“You’re pregnant,” he repeated, as if the words tasted foreign on his tongue.
A rush of warmth flooded his chest, an emotion he hadn’t expected hitting him hard.
Claire’s pulse pounded. “Is that… is that okay?”
Nate let out a rough chuckle, running a hand down his face. “Okay?” He shook his head, looking at her like she had just given him the world. “Claire, this is—” He stopped, swallowing thickly before reaching for her. “This is incredible.”
A choked laugh slipped past her lips, relief crashing over her like a tidal wave. “You’re really okay with this?”
He cupped her face, his eyes dark and sincere. “I never thought I’d have this again. A family. A chance to do it right this time. With you.”
Emotion clogged Claire’s throat. She had prepared for resistance, hesitation, anything but the raw joy radiating from him.
Nate exhaled, his mind already spinning with thoughts.
He had thought about giving Leo a sibling before, long ago, back when he and Melanie had still been together.
It had been part of the plan—growing their family, giving Leo someone to share his childhood with.
But when everything fell apart, that dream had faded into something distant, something he had convinced himself was no longer possible.
Now, it was real. And with Claire, it was something entirely different.
For the first time, he let himself imagine it—a little girl, maybe, with Claire’s soft smile and her fierce determination.
Someone he could protect, cherish, someone who would bring a light into their home just like Leo had.
Or a boy, a second son who could grow up with his brother, sharing in the adventures and love Nate had longed for as a kid.
But the idea of a daughter stirred something deeper inside him.
A little girl he could watch grow, who Claire could nurture with all the love she carried in her heart.
A daughter who would have everything Melanie had never been—stability, devotion, unwavering care.
A daughter who would see love between her parents every single day, who would know what it meant to belong in a family that never gave up on each other.
He tightened his grip on Claire’s hands, a slow smile tugging at his lips.
This wasn’t just a child. This was a future he never thought he’d get again.
Leo. He would have a sibling, someone to grow up with, someone to call his own.
The thought warmed something deep inside him, a place he hadn’t even realized was empty until now.
And then there was Claire. The woman he had fallen for, the woman who had turned his carefully constructed world upside down. This baby—their baby—only solidified what he already knew.
“I love you,” he said suddenly, the words spilling out effortlessly. “I need you to know that.”
Claire’s breath hitched. She had felt it, of course. In every touch, in every glance. But hearing him say it, in this moment, sent her heart into freefall.
“I love you too.”
And just like that, everything felt right.
They weren’t just two people navigating an uncertain path anymore. They were a family.
The next morning, Claire woke with a renewed sense of clarity.
As she lay in Nate’s arms, her hand instinctively drifted to her stomach, the reality of her pregnancy settling deeper into her heart.
Nate stirred beside her, pressing a lazy kiss against her shoulder before propping himself up on one elbow to look at her.
"Morning," he murmured, brushing a lock of hair from her face. "How are you feeling?"
Claire smiled softly. "Happy. A little nervous, but happy."
Nate nodded, as if he understood completely. "Me too. But more than anything, I feel ready. Ready to do this with you."
They lay there in silence for a moment, their fingers entwining. Finally, Claire spoke the thought that had been lingering in the back of her mind. "We should tell people. No more hiding. No more secrecy. We’re having a baby, Nate. We’re building a life together. It’s time we own that."
Nate exhaled, rolling onto his back and staring up at the ceiling for a beat. "Yeah. You’re right." He turned his gaze back to her, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. "You do realize this town thrives on gossip, right? Once we go public, there’s no taking it back."
Claire chuckled. "Oh, I know. The ladies at the bakery will have a field day with this."
"And the mayor," Nate added with a sigh, "is going to have something to say about his daughter and the town’s most eligible bachelor having a baby together."
Claire murmured. "And your father."
A flicker of tension passed between them, but it didn’t linger. Instead, Nate reached for her hand, squeezing it gently. "We’ll handle them. Together. No matter what they think, this is our life."
Claire felt a rush of warmth at his words. He meant it. They were in this together, no matter the opinions of Oak Valley or their families.
"So where do we start?" she asked.
Nate grinned. "I say we start by sitting down with both of our fathers. Let’s get the hardest conversations out of the way first."
Claire inhaled deeply and nodded. "Okay. Let’s do it."
Their journey as a family was just beginning, and while challenges lay ahead, they were ready to face them. Together.
