Chapter 10
Meeting the Families
Preparations and Decisions
Nate and Claire sat in the cozy sitting room of his mansion, the morning sunlight filtering gently through sheer curtains.
They had spent days deliberating how to deliver the news of their relationship and the baby to their fathers.
Nate paced slowly, deep in thought, while Claire sat curled up on the plush loveseat, sipping her tea.
"We could visit each father separately," Nate suggested thoughtfully, pausing by the window. "I could speak with my father alone first—maybe ease him into the idea before we face your dad. He's always been cautious, and it might help to prepare him."
Claire shook her head gently. "I understand your reasoning, but it feels like we’re splitting up the issue. They need to see us united from the start."
Nate nodded, respecting her perspective. "Then what if we arrange a grand dinner, inviting both fathers together? It could help neutralize some of the initial tension."
Claire bit her lip, considering the idea. "It's tempting, but putting them together might amplify their reactions. They might feed off each other's concerns, and things could spiral out of control."
They exchanged a thoughtful glance, the tension easing slightly as Nate squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Then it sounds like our best option is a combined dinner, carefully planned and executed to convey the seriousness and unity of our decision."
Claire’s eyes brightened with determination and warmth. "Agreed. Together is the best way. They deserve to hear the truth directly from us, no matter how difficult it may be."
Nate had orchestrated every detail of this momentous dinner for weeks leading up to the evening.
Scheduled for Friday, October 5 at his sprawling mansion, the event was designed to impress and serve as the perfect stage for breaking life-changing news.
Renowned chef Giovanni Mancini, always available when Nate called, had been booked again to helm the kitchen, accompanied by his meticulous team—sous-chef Elena, pastry specialist Marco, and a dedicated brigade whose reputation for flawless service was legendary.
Early that morning, Giovanni and his staff arrived to transform the mansion’s grand dining hall into a scene of understated elegance.
Fresh, seasonal ingredients were sourced from local markets, and every dish on the carefully curated menu was planned to delight and comfort in equal measure.
Meanwhile, in a quiet sitting room away from the final touches of floral arrangements and polished silverware, Nate and Claire shared a private moment to finalize their plan.
They knew that the conversation ahead would define the future of both their families.
“I’ve thought about every word,” Nate murmured, his voice low but resolute.
“This dinner isn’t just about a meal—it’s our statement.
My father, your father, and everyone present will see that our decision was made with love and careful consideration.
” Claire’s eyes shone with both determination and tenderness.
“We’re not hiding behind excuses. We’re choosing honesty, even if it shakes the foundation of our worlds.
” After weighing every nuance, they agreed that the mansion—with its legacy and grandeur—was the ideal setting for this announcement.
It would remind everyone that family and tradition could guide them toward a hopeful future even in moments of upheaval.
The Evening Unfolds
Nate stood in the dining room, surveying the long wooden table that had been meticulously arranged.
Elegant dinnerware gleamed under the soft glow of flickering candlelight, and a centerpiece of fresh flowers added warmth to the setting.
Every detail—from the crisp, pressed linens to the delicate arrangement of cutlery—had been executed with precision, a testament to the careful planning of the past few weeks.
Claire entered the room, smoothing the fabric of her dress, her expression guarded but composed.
“It looks perfect,” she said softly, stepping beside him.
“I want this to go well,” he admitted, exhaling as he loosened the collar of his shirt.
“I know your father isn’t going to take this lightly.
” Claire nodded, the weight of the impending conversation mirrored in her steady gaze.
Her father was a natural protector, and this wasn’t just about her anymore—it was about the life growing inside her, a life that defied conventional expectations.
And then there was Nate’s father. Though supportive in his own way, his logical mind would not easily overlook the significant age gap between Nate and Claire.
“We’ll handle them as a team,” Claire reassured, intertwining her fingers with his.
“No matter what.” He gave her hand a small squeeze, their silent unity pact solidifying in that brief touch.
Just then, the doorbell rang—a signal that the carefully planned evening was about to begin.
The Arrival and the Revelation
The tension in the air was palpable as their parents arrived.
Claire’s father, Mayor Richard Montgomery, entered first, his expression unreadable as he took in the lavish dining setup.
Behind him, Nate’s father, David Hunter, followed, his eyes briefly locking onto Nate’s with the sharp gaze of a man who suspected there was more to this dinner than a simple family gathering.
Claire greeted her father with a quick kiss, though his arms remained stiff.
“Everything alright?” he asked, suspicion edging his tone.
“Yes, Dad,” she replied quickly. “We just… we have something important to talk about.” Nate, meeting his father’s questioning look, motioned toward the table.
“Let’s sit.” The clinking of glasses and the shuffle of plates punctuated the silence as everyone took their seats.
With every passing second, the air grew heavier, as though the very atmosphere braced for the truth that was about to be revealed.
Finally, Nate cleared his throat, his deep voice cutting through the quiet.
"Claire and I… we have some news." Her father’s eyes narrowed, his grip tightening on his silverware.
"What kind of news?" Nate took a breath, choosing his words carefully. "We’re together. And we’re having a baby.
" For a moment, nothing. Absolute silence.
Then Richard set his fork down with an audible clink, his jaw tightening.
His expression was unreadable, but Claire knew that was just the calm before the storm.
"You’re what?" His voice was low and controlled, but Claire could hear the restrained emotion behind it.
"Dad—" Claire started, but he lifted a hand, his gaze locked on Nate.
"You got my daughter pregnant?" Nate met his gaze head-on. "We’re in love. This wasn’t an accident, Richard. We’re building a life together.
" Richard let out a slow breath, rubbing a hand over his face.
"Do you have any idea what this looks like? Claire, do you understand what people are going to say? What they’re already saying?
" Claire’s stomach twisted. "I don’t care what people think.
" "You should," he countered, his tone laced with frustration. "You’re the mayor’s daughter.
Nate is—" He hesitated, his gaze flicking between them.
"This town talks. They always have, they always will. And this—this is going to be the only thing they talk about. Are you prepared for that?" "Yes," she answered firmly. "Because Nate and I are in this together. This isn’t just about a baby—it’s about us. We love each other, and we’re choosing this." Silence stretched between them again, but her father seemed to be searching for something in her eyes this time. A flicker of understanding passed over his face, though his concern remained. David Hunter, who had been listening quietly, finally spoke. "You’re young, Claire. And Nate… you’ve lived an entirely different life up to this point. Have you thought about what that means in the long run? How will your dynamic change as the years go by? About marriage and parenthood?" Nate exhaled, meeting his father’s gaze. "Yes, Dad. We’ve thought about everything. This isn’t a fleeting decision. I love Claire, and I love this baby we’re having.
I plan to marry her." Claire turned sharply toward him, eyes wide.
"You do?" Nate took her hand, turning toward her as the rest of the world faded away.
"Of course I do. I want us to be a family in every sense of the word.
" Tears burned the backs of Claire’s eyes, but she held them in, her grip tightening in his.
Richard leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. "Marriage. That’s a big step.
" "It is," Nate agreed. "But it’s the right one." A heavy silence followed, the weight of everything settling in the room. And then, slowly, Claire’s father sighed. "I’m not going to lie and say I expected this. And I won’t say I’m thrilled about it, either.
But…" He glanced at Claire, his expression softening just enough. "You’re my daughter. And I can see that you’re happy.
That means something." Claire’s heart swelled.
"Dad—" He held up a hand. "That doesn’t mean I won’t be watching.
Closely." Nate smirked slightly. "I’d expect nothing less.
" David let out a quiet chuckle, shaking his head.
"Well, looks like we’re in for an interesting year.
" The tension in the room lightened just a bit, the first steps toward acceptance having been taken. It wasn’t fully approved yet. But it was enough.
As dinner concluded, Giovanni’s professional team quietly began clearing the table with practiced efficiency, moving silently and seamlessly in the background.
They replaced dinner plates with crystal glasses, each meticulously filled with aged cognac, a special reserve Nate had chosen personally to mark the significance of the evening.
Its warm amber glow sparkled gently under the soft dining room lights, adding intimacy to the gathering.
The initial tension melted away as conversations shifted toward lighter, more hopeful topics.
“Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?” David Hunter asked, breaking the gentle laughter that had started to bubble up around the table.
Claire smiled warmly, her eyes glowing with happiness. "Either way, Leo is going to love being a big brother."
Nate chuckled warmly, nodding in agreement. "He’s already planning his role—baseball lessons if it’s a boy and fierce protection if it's a little sister."
Mayor Montgomery Greene’s expression softened further, a small smile tugging at his lips. “Grandchildren really do change everything,” he admitted quietly.
Nate leaned forward, excitement sparkling in his eyes. “Speaking of the future, I have plans beyond just this dinner. Plans involving marriage—something I think could positively impact the town."
Mayor Montgomery’s eyes brightened with curiosity. "Well, that certainly sounds intriguing," he said cautiously, though clearly pleased. He didn’t ask for specifics, content simply knowing Nate had something big planned.
As Giovanni's attentive staff began quietly clearing plates, their graceful movements seamlessly maintaining the warmth and elegance of the evening, Nate and Claire shared a subtle, hopeful smile.
The evening drew to a close on a note of cautious optimism and warmth, signaling a hopeful beginning for their families. Claire squeezed Nate’s hand under the table, knowing they had just crossed a threshold together.
Oh yes, they were in this.
Together.
