Chapter 11
Planning Their Future
The soft crunch of gravel underfoot blended harmoniously with the gentle hum of bees dancing lazily between vivid blooms. Nate and Claire walked slowly hand-in-hand along the winding pathways that crisscrossed the expansive grounds surrounding Nate’s mansion.
The estate seemed bathed in golden sunlight, each petal of the carefully tended flowers vibrant and inviting, creating a backdrop worthy of their dreams.
“I can already picture it,” Claire said softly, squeezing Nate’s hand as she paused near a charming, ivy-covered pergola. Her gaze swept across the emerald lawns and colorful flowerbeds, imagining rows of seats filled with smiling faces. “It feels right—like it was always meant to be here.”
Nate's heart swelled as he watched her eyes sparkle with excitement. He lifted their intertwined hands, brushing a gentle kiss across her knuckles. “Then here it is. Our forever begins right here.”
He drew her closer, envisioning exactly how he wanted the ceremony to unfold.
“How about a grand medieval-style canopy tent, right over there?” He pointed toward the open stretch near the gardens, bordered by blossoming roses and lavender.
“Something elegant yet magical. Draped fabric and fairy lights glowing softly around us.”
Claire smiled brilliantly, her eyes alight with delight. “Oh, Nate, that sounds perfect. It will feel like stepping into a fairy tale.”
“And the music,” Nate continued, excitement coloring his voice, “a live orchestra, the gentle notes of violins and cellos surrounding us as we exchange vows.”
Claire laughed softly, pressing her cheek against his chest. “You’re quite the romantic, Mr. Hunter.”
“Only because you inspire me, future Mrs. Hunter,” Nate whispered tenderly, his words igniting warmth deep within her.
Their moment lingered sweetly, each imagining the magical day they were planning together.
But Claire soon broke the silence, her voice taking on a thoughtful tone.
“You know, I don’t think we should limit this to just close friends and family.
I want everyone in Oak Valley to share this day with us.
They’ve wondered about us, and they’ve gossiped about us.
Gaining their support would mean a whole lot to both of us and our children.
Nate nodded, his expression growing more thoughtful. “You’re right. I had this very thing in mind when I mentioned something special to your father at dinner. This should be a celebration for the entire community. Everyone is invited.”
Claire’s excitement bubbled over. “We’ll need to make sure invitations are easy for everyone to access. Let’s put RSVP notes at all the key locations—the café, the banks, the grocery store, City Hall. Anywhere people frequently gather.”
“That’s perfect,” Nate agreed warmly. “We’ll let them know we’re truly grateful to have them in our lives.”
Their decision brought a fresh wave of happiness, knowing they were sharing their joy with the town that had shaped their love story.
Later that afternoon, they met with Giovanni Mancini, whose culinary expertise had become essential to their celebrations.
Giovanni’s eyes sparkled with creativity as Nate and Claire described their vision of the reception—a grand feast set throughout the sprawling grounds, designed for mingling, laughter, and celebration.
“We’ll have multiple food stations,” Giovanni suggested enthusiastically. “Something for every palate. Perhaps seafood here, fresh pasta and Italian dishes there, grilled meats, vegetarian options, and even decadent desserts. It’ll feel like a festive market.”
Claire’s eyes widened with delight. “Exactly! We want everyone to enjoy themselves and feel part of something special.”
Nate smiled, grateful once again for Giovanni’s thoughtful creativity. They carefully mapped out the reception's layout, visualizing friends and neighbors mingling happily beneath a twilight sky.
As days passed, the excitement grew, but Nate found himself growing increasingly attentive to Claire’s well-being. One evening, after noticing her pale complexion and tired eyes, he gently guided her to a comfortable chaise lounge in their sitting room.
“You look exhausted,” he murmured softly, concern evident in his voice. “Let me handle some of these details for now. You should rest.”
Claire hesitated, prepared to protest, but the gentle firmness in his eyes convinced her otherwise. She sighed softly, sinking gratefully into the plush cushions. “Thank you,” she whispered. “You’ve been amazing through all of this.”
“It’s my pleasure,” Nate replied, kissing her forehead gently. “You deserve all the comfort and happiness in the world. Let me carry some of the load now.”
Claire watched Nate take control of the preparations, her heart overflowing with gratitude and admiration.
His thoughtful gestures and unwavering care reassured her deeply.
For the first time, she felt completely free to savor the joy and excitement of their approaching wedding, knowing Nate had her back, always.
Their quiet moments together became even more cherished—an evening stroll under the stars, shared laughter over a quiet dinner, and whispered dreams as they sat wrapped in blankets on the mansion's veranda.
One evening, Claire took Nate’s hand, saying, “I want to go to the bedroom early tonight.” When they entered the bedroom, Claire turned to Nate and started unbuttoning his shirt. “Undress me”, she told Nate. “I want to play.”
“But tonight, I just want us to taste each other because we know how to do that, and it works so well,” she said with a wicked smile.
