Chapter 14.

Danny Hollinger opened the door of his small second-floor apartment at six fifty-eight in the morning and found a woman standing on the worn concrete landing who did not belong in his world.

She was blonde. Deep blue eyes. Maybe five feet tall if she was lucky.

The tailored charcoal dress she wore hugged a body that looked both delicate and strong at the same time…

tight, firm breasts that the fabric only just contained, a narrow waist, and legs that were clearly the product of serious work in a gym.

Her skin was smooth and luminous even under the flat early light.

She carried a slim black leather portfolio under one arm and a quiet, professional composure that somehow still managed to feel warm.

“Good morning, Mr. Hollinger,” she said. Her voice was clear, low, and steady. “My name is Victoria. I come from the office of Brian Thomson.”

Danny stared at her. The name hit him harder than the sight of her.

“Brian…” he whispered.

She smiled and nodded once. “May I come in? We have quite a bit to discuss.”

He stepped back automatically, still half-convinced he was dreaming.

Three separate shocks were colliding in his head at once.

First, someone was at his door at barely seven in the morning.

Second, Brian… his best friend, the same guy he had worked the line with for years, the same guy who had vanished into a skyscraper and a fortune ten days ago…

had actually sent someone. Third, and not least, the someone was this woman.

Danny was only five foot six. Most women he met were taller or at least the same height.

This one was small enough that he felt large standing near her, and every detail of her was exactly the kind of thing that had always short-circuited his brain: the height, the blonde hair, the blue eyes, the body that looked both soft and athletic under the expensive dress.

Victoria walked past him into the apartment as if she had been there a hundred times.

She took in the small living room with one calm glance…

the worn sofa, the scuffed coffee table, the single window that looked out onto the side of another brick building…

and then sat down on the sofa like she belonged there.

She set the portfolio on the cushion beside her and folded her hands in her lap.

Danny closed the door and stayed standing for a moment, not sure what to do with his hands.

“You can sit, Mr. Hollinger,” she said gently. “This is going to take a little while, and I’d rather you weren’t on your feet the entire time.”

He sat on the opposite end of the sofa, leaving a careful distance between them. His pulse was still hammering.

Victoria turned slightly so she was facing him. Her expression was serious now, but not cold.

“I’m going to start at the beginning and go through everything carefully,” she said.

“You can stop me at any point and ask questions. There is no rush, and nothing I tell you this morning is conditional on you agreeing to anything. The decisions have already been made on Brian’s side.

This is simply the delivery of those decisions. ”

Danny swallowed. “Okay.”

She opened the portfolio and took out a thin stack of documents, but she did not hand them over yet.

“Ten days ago Brian Thomson became the sole owner and CEO of Dranning Corporation. In the process of settling the legal structure around that ownership, he was required to name a successor… someone who would inherit full control of the corporation and all of its assets if anything happened to him. He left the line blank for several days while he thought about it. Yesterday afternoon he filled it in.”

She met his eyes directly.

“He named you, Danny. You are the legal heir to everything Brian now owns. If he dies, the corporation, the holdings, the liquid assets beyond what I’m about to describe… all of it transfers to you. No board intervention. No interim management. Full control.”

The words landed in the small apartment like a physical weight. Danny felt the blood leave his face. He opened his mouth, closed it again, and finally managed a rough sound that was not quite a word.

Victoria continued in the same calm, measured tone.

“That contingency is already executed and filed. It is not a draft. It is not a suggestion. It is active as of yesterday. Alongside that decision, Brian has instructed an immediate transfer of five hundred million dollars into an account that will be opened in your name this morning. That money is yours regardless of whether anything ever happens to him. It is not a loan. It is not an advance against a future inheritance. It is a gift, liquid and unrestricted, to be used however you choose. Housing, travel, investments, doing nothing at all… it does not matter. The money is yours.”

Danny’s hands were gripping his knees hard enough that the knuckles had gone white. Five hundred million. The number did not feel real. He could still smell the faint grease from last night’s takeout in the kitchen. His rent was nine hundred and forty dollars a month.

Victoria gave him a moment before she went on.

“There are two more parts to what Brian arranged for you,” she said. “The first is me.”

She set the papers down and rested her hands on her thighs.

“My role is to serve as your personal assistant in the same capacity that Constance Fanning and Holly Mann serve Brian. I handle logistics, scheduling, information flow, and anything else that makes the new reality manageable. I am paid by Brian Thomson… salary, housing, benefits, everything. But my loyalty and my presence belong to you. I stay at your side the way they stay at his. I do not report back to the tower unless you send me. I do not take instructions that conflict with your interests. If you want me to leave at any point, I leave. If you want me to stay, I stay.”

She paused, and for the first time a faint, careful warmth entered her voice.

“Brian was very clear about the nature of the position. It is not purely administrative. He knows you. He knows you have been alone for a long time. The woman who took this role had to be genuinely willing… willing to be present in every sense the position might require, including physical intimacy if that is something you want or need. I am that woman. I accepted the role with full knowledge of what it could include. There is no pressure and no expectation on a timetable. But I am not here under false pretenses, and I will not pretend the possibility does not exist.”

Danny felt heat rise in his face. He looked away for a second, then forced himself to meet her eyes again. She did not look away.

“The final piece,” Victoria said, “is security.”

She glanced toward the window as if she could see through the brick wall to the street below.

“A protective detail is already moving into position around you. They will be permanent. Two operators on you at all times, rotating shifts, with additional resources available if the threat picture changes. Their job is to keep you safe without making you feel like a prisoner. They will not interfere with your daily life unless there is a reason. You will meet the team lead later this morning. Brian was explicit that the detail exists to protect you, not to monitor you for his benefit. That said, any credible threat against you will be treated as a threat against him, and the response will be proportionate.”

She closed the portfolio and rested it on her lap.

“That is everything,” she said quietly. “You are the named heir. Five hundred million dollars is being prepared for transfer into your control today. I am here as your assistant and, if you choose, your companion, fully paid by Brian and fully loyal to you. A security team is already taking up positions to keep you alive and free. You do not have to decide anything this morning except whether you are willing to let me stay long enough to walk you through the paperwork and answer every question you have.”

Danny sat in silence for a long time. The early light coming through the single window had shifted while she spoke. Somewhere outside a truck backed up with a warning beep. His own heartbeat was still too loud in his ears.

“Brian did all of this yesterday?” he finally asked, voice rough.

“Yes.”

“And he sent you.”

“Yes.”

“Knowing what you just told me about… the rest of it.”

Victoria’s expression remained steady. “He was very clear about what he wanted for you. He did not want you to face any of this alone. He also did not want the first person who walked through your door to be a lawyer who treated you like a transaction. He chose someone who could stay.”

Danny dragged both hands down his face and let out a long, shaking breath.

When he looked at her again there was still disbelief in his eyes, but underneath it something else was beginning to take shape…

something that looked a little like the first crack of understanding that his life, as of this moment, was no longer the life he had woken up inside of an hour ago.

Victoria waited, patient and present, on the worn sofa that had never held anyone like her before.

The conversation was only beginning.

Victoria reached into the slim portfolio and drew out two cards.

The first was a matte black bank card with no bank logo visible on the front…

only a subtle embossed number and Danny’s full name already printed along the bottom.

The second was a simple white cardstock rectangle with clean black text: a secure URL, a temporary username, and a one-time access code that would expire in twelve hours.

She held them out.

“This is the primary card linked to the account,” she said. “The second card has everything you need to view the balance and activity online. I recommend you check it yourself right now so there is no room for doubt.”
