Chapter 14. #2
Danny took both cards with fingers that did not feel entirely steady.
His phone was still on the charger by the kitchen counter.
He stood, walked the short distance, and brought it back to the sofa.
Victoria remained quiet while he typed the URL, entered the credentials, and waited for the page to load.
The number appeared in clean, unadorned font.
Available Balance: $500,000,000.00
Five hundred million dollars.
The digits did not flicker or change. They simply sat there on the screen of a phone that still had a cracked corner from when he had dropped it two months earlier on the factory floor. Danny stared until his eyes burned. He refreshed the page once. The number remained exactly the same.
He set the phone down on the coffee table with exaggerated care, as if any sudden movement might make the figure disappear.
Victoria’s hand settled lightly on his leg, just above the knee. The touch was warm and steady through the fabric of his jeans.
“Danny… if I may call you that.”
He nodded without looking away from the phone.
“I am yours,” she said, voice low and clear. “In every capacity you want. I will do everything you ask, as long as it does not betray Brian Thomson… or you.”
She leaned forward. The kiss she gave him was soft, closed-mouthed, and brief. It carried no demand and no performance… only the quiet seal of a promise already made. When she drew back she stayed close enough that he could feel the warmth of her breath.
“I had the choice,” she whispered. “And I chose this.”
Danny’s throat worked. The apartment felt smaller than it had ten minutes earlier. The worn sofa, the scuffed table, the single window that never got direct sunlight… all of it suddenly looked temporary in a way it never had before.
Victoria sat back a little, giving him space while keeping her hand where it was.
“You can stay here if that is what you need tonight,” she said.
“There is no pressure to move. But you can also walk out of this apartment today and take a suite in any hotel in the city that will have you. You can afford it. You can afford any of them. If you want the night to feel different from every other night you have spent inside these walls, that option is open.”
Danny dragged a hand down his face and let out a long breath. The number on the phone screen was still visible. Five hundred million. The black card sat beside it like a quiet accusation of how completely the ground had shifted under his feet.
“I can’t stay here,” he said finally, voice rough. “Not after seeing that. It’ll feel like I’m waiting for someone to wake me up.”
Victoria nodded once, as if she had expected the answer. She reached for her own phone, unlocked it, and opened a short list she had prepared in advance… five hotels, each selected for privacy, security compatibility, and genuine luxury rather than flash.
“These are the ones I would recommend for a first night,” she said, turning the screen so he could see. “All of them can take a last-minute booking under a privacy hold. The security team already has protocols for each location. You choose. I handle the rest.”
Danny looked at the list. Names he had only ever seen on billboards or in passing conversations. One stood out simply because it felt the furthest from the life he was still sitting inside of.
“That one,” he said, tapping the third name.
Victoria did not ask if he was certain. She simply nodded, opened a new message thread, and began typing with clean efficiency. The booking request went out first. A second message followed immediately to the security detail already staged nearby:
Primary is relocating. Destination locked. Full team transition to new site. ETA ninety minutes from confirmation.
A soft chime answered within thirty seconds. Confirmation. The suite would be ready. The protective detail would shift in overlapping waves so that coverage never dropped.
Victoria set her phone down and looked at him again.
“Pack whatever you want to bring,” she said. “Anything you leave can be collected later or replaced. We can be out of here in twenty minutes if you move now. The car is already downstairs.”
Danny stood. His legs felt unsteady in a way that had nothing to do with the early hour.
He walked into the small bedroom, pulled a duffel from the closet, and began putting clothes into it without any real system…
jeans, shirts, the one decent jacket he owned, a charger, the black bank card, the white instruction card.
Victoria remained in the living room, giving him the privacy of the threshold while she coordinated the final details with the team.
When he came back out she was on her feet, portfolio under one arm, expression calm and present.
“Ready?” she asked.
Danny looked once around the apartment that had been the entire container of his adult life. Then he nodded.
“Yeah,” he said. “I’m ready.”
Victoria opened the door and stepped aside so he could walk through first. Danny still held the cracked phone in his hand, the screen locked now but the image of five hundred million dollars burned into his mind.
Behind them the worn sofa and the quiet apartment remained exactly as they had been…
artifacts of a morning that had already ended.
She walked slightly ahead of him down the narrow stairs, her heels soft on the concrete, one hand lightly guiding the way without ever making it feel like she was pulling him.
At the bottom she opened the exterior door and led him the short distance to the waiting car.
The security detail stayed invisible until the exact moment the rear door was opened for them; then two figures were simply there, professional and silent, making sure the transfer happened clean without drawing attention from the street.
Danny slid in first. Victoria followed and settled beside him, close enough that the same quiet warmth from the sofa was still present between them. The door closed. The car pulled away from the curb with a smooth, expensive surge of power.
For several seconds neither of them spoke. Danny stared down at the phone still resting in his palm.
Victoria’s voice was soft when she finally broke the silence.
“We can get you a new phone,” she said. “Top of the line. Whatever you prefer. I can have it delivered to the hotel before we even finish check-in if you want.”
Danny nodded slowly. The idea of simply replacing a cracked phone without thinking about the cost was so far above the life he was used to that it almost did not register as real.
Victoria leaned in and kissed him again… another soft, closed-mouthed press of her lips against his, brief and steadying rather than demanding. When she drew back she stayed close.
“Danny… take a deep breath,” she whispered.
He did. The air filled his lungs and left again in a long, uneven exhale.
“This is your life now,” she said quietly. “When you are ready, we will talk more about it. And I am sure Brian will talk to you soon as well.”
Danny nodded once more. The words settled over him like a weight he was only beginning to feel the shape of.
Victoria smiled… small, genuine, and patient…
and sat back just enough to give him space while remaining close.
Outside the tinted windows the familiar streets of his old neighborhood began to fall away.
The car moved steadily toward the hotel, carrying him further from everything he had known and deeper into the life that had been handed to him only an hour before.
---
“Good morning, Boss…” Benita purred as she set the delicate porcelain cup in front of him.
The rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee rose between them.
She lingered just long enough for her hip to brush his shoulder, a quiet reminder of the afternoon they had shared, before stepping back with a small, knowing smile.
Brian returned the smile and nodded. “Thank you, Benita.”
He was thoroughly sated. The morning had already been full in the best possible way…
Holly’s soft mouth waking him with a slow, deliberate blowjob that left him gasping into the pillows, followed by a long, steam-filled shower where Constance had pressed him against the marble and taken him with the same focused hunger she brought to everything else.
Now the coffee was simply the final, grounding note.
He leaned back in his chair, the residual heat of both women still lingering under his skin, and took a slow first sip.
Holly sat to his left, tablet open but face attentive.
Constance occupied the seat on his right, already dressed for the day in a tailored blouse that somehow still managed to look soft.
Dani was at her usual place farther down the table, coffee untouched, storm-gray eyes quietly scanning the morning reports on her own device until the conversation pulled her in.
Holly spoke first.
“Victoria made contact with Danny at just before seven this morning,” she said.
“She’s with him now. They’re en route to a high-end hotel.
She’s handling the transition carefully…
giving him space to absorb everything while still keeping him moving forward.
Early reports are that he’s overwhelmed but not rejecting any of it. ”
