Chapter 47
Chapter Forty-Seven
Gent
When the challenging howl filled with pain and suffering permeates the air, our mate flinches. Yet another wolf charges into the clearing and heads straight toward our mate. The werewolf changes back to his wolf form in a flash and puts himself between our mate and the attacking wolf.
:For fuck’s sake, call me Samantha. I’m not your fucking mate.
:Yes, my mate. I needle her to keep her distracted.
I can’t stand for her to be afraid. She must glean some of my thoughts and her attention focuses on the enraged wolf.
Some of his pack try to hold him back, but he’s having none of it.
I’m not even sure who he’s trying to attack; there’s nothing sane in his actions.
:Patricia killed his pregnant mate.
Horror laces my veins, followed by sadness. Putting him down would be a mercy. Losing one’s mate… I shudder and fight back the urge to shift and protect mine. Just a flash and I could carry her away from here.
:Don’t you dare!
She’s ferocious in her denial and struggles to sit up.
The woman by her side holds her down and I make a move to push her aside.
Her purple eyes lock with mine and a barrage of possible futures clouds my mind.
I fight to get free of her magic and for a split second lose control.
The woman flinches back from my burning eyes before holding her ground.
But she no longer tries to hold my mind.
“Thea, let me up. I feel fine.”
“Sammie…”
The bitch on the ground moans and all of us turn to look at her. From the way the air vibrates around us, I’m not the only one who wants to shred her to pieces. Purple-eye holds up her hand, but it’s our mate’s words that stop us.
“She’s mine,” she snarls and the bitch flinches. “Isn’t that right, Patty?” she continues with a honeyed tone that is laced with poison.
The bitch takes a moment and gulps. “Y-yes…” she finally chokes out and our mate purrs. The vampires by her side twitch but otherwise cover their feelings. That one moment is all the distraction the enraged wolf needs.
“Alpha, no!” someone yells.
A massive wolf slams into our mate. I feel her pain for just a moment and then she falls unconscious.
I lose my already strained control and the beast breaks free. The dragon surges forward with vengeance, taking over my mind.
Massive wings beat and batter the wolves around. His maw closes around the wolf and flings him away from our mate. There’s nothing I can do when he picks up our unconscious mate, and the bitch, in his front claws and rears up.
One leap and we are up in the air.
Mine, mine, mine, mine, mine.
Dragons hoard their treasures. And they are not known to be the most reasonable creatures at the best of times.
They don’t belong in this world.
I try to reason with him, but he’s blocking me out. It won’t be long until he pushes me out completely. All I can hope is that he doesn’t try to go back home. Crossing to the fae realm would kill our mate.
As my consciousness fades, I send a prayer to the fates.
Protect her.
