Blurb

I thought the fire was the dangerous part of this assignment.

Then the wind shifted, and my best friend dragged me into a lookout tower with flames screaming below the ridge. Twelve square feet of glass. Nowhere to run. Just Felix and me and a decade of things we’ve never said.

Felix reads fires for a living. He knows exactly where the next spark will catch. Turns out he’s been reading me the same way, and I’ve been too blind to notice.

His voice over the radio never wavers. It shattered when I got on my knees.

I’m not supposed to want this. I was engaged. I was straight. I was the guy who showed up after the worst was over and took pictures from a safe distance.

But safe doesn’t feel like anything anymore. He does.

If he looks at me like that one more time, I’m going to be the one pushing him against the supply shelves until he’s just as wrecked as I am.
