Volume 1 Chapter 3 - Whisper of the Forest

through the forest canopy. Tiny droplets of dew clung to every petal and leaf, and the sound of rustling leaves filled the air like gentle music.

Cindy fluttered her wings slowly, feeling the morning warmth spread through them. Below her, her tiny companion—the horned rabbit she'd nicknamed "Puff"—was still asleep, curled up in a nest of moss.

"Lucky you," she murmured with a chuckle. "You don't have to worry about being eaten by birds from the sky."

She flew upward, hovering near the treetops. The view was breathtaking—waves of green stretched endlessly, and the wind carried the sweet scent of blooming spirit-flowers. Tiny lights floated between branches—spirit motes, faintly glowing creatures of pure mana.

Cindy extended a wing toward one. It drifted close and touched her lightly before floating away, leaving behind a tiny shimmer.

Her wings glittered faintly brighter.

"So that's mana... this world's version of energy?" she thought. "If I keep doing this, maybe I can get stronger—like leveling up by drinking sunlight."

The thought made her laugh softly. Who would've thought the exhausted ER nurse who barely survived night shifts would end up farming mana from light particles?

?

She spent her morning exploring the forest with wonder.

Every small discovery felt magical:

·

Dewdrops that sparkled with faint healing magic when touched by sunlight.

·

Tiny blue mushrooms that glowed at night and hummed when disturbed.

·

Flowers that closed their petals when she landed, like shy creatures.

When hunger returned, she found a patch of nectar-rich blooms and drank until she felt full, warmth filling her tiny body.

"Maybe I really can live like this," she said aloud. "No rush, no pressure... just flying, eating, and enjoying the view."

For the first time in years, her heart felt light.

?

By noon, she returned to Puff's little nest. The horned rabbit yawned and twitched its long ears as it saw her return.

"Good morning, sleepyhead," she teased.

The creature squeaked happily and hopped beside her. It carried a small fruit in its mouth—a spirit berry that glowed faintly.

"For me?" Cindy asked. Puff nudged it toward her as if insisting.

"Thank you..." She smiled, touched. "You're such a sweetheart."

They spent the afternoon near the stream, where Cindy tried to perfect her flying. She practiced flying through loops of branches, gliding just above the water's surface, and perching on moving leaves. Each time she succeeded, a faint chime rang in her mind.

She gasped softly. "Wait—I can control wind now?"

She flapped her wings, focusing on the feeling. A small breeze stirred around her, lifting petals into the air. Puff's fur fluffed up in surprise, and Cindy giggled.

"It's just me, don't worry."

For a moment, she felt a rush of joy. Power—not the kind that saved lives in an ER, but something pure and natural.

"I'm really... changing."

?

As the sun began to set, golden light painted the forest in warm colors. Cindy and Puff sat by the stream, watching the reflection of the sky ripple in the water.

"I think I'm starting to understand," she whispered. "This world isn't just dangerous—it's alive. Everything here... breathes."

The forest wind brushed her wings gently, as if answering her thoughts.

A faint whisper echoed in her mind—soft and melodic.

"Child of spirit light... fly gently, for the wind watches over you."

Cindy froze, looking around.

"...Who's there?"

But only the rustle of leaves replied. Puff tilted its head, sensing nothing unusual.

Cindy exhaled slowly. Maybe it was her imagination—or maybe the world itself was speaking to her.

Either way, she smiled. "Guess I'll keep flying and find out."

As twilight fell, the butterfly and her tiny companion curled under a broad leaf, fireflies flickering above like distant stars.

And for the second time since she was reborn, Cindy felt something she hadn't in years—

peace.
