Volume 1 Chapter 8 - Winds of Change

The morning sun shimmered through the trees, scattering light like golden dust. The forest was peaceful, filled with the hum of mana and birdsong.

Cindy hovered above the stream, her newly evolved wings sparkling like crystal glass brushed with sunlight. The air around her pulsed with gentle energy—alive and responsive to every flutter.

She extended a wing slightly. The wind curved with her movement, forming a faint swirl of air.

Her heart raced with excitement. "I can feel the flow now... it's like the breeze is part of me."

Puff watched from a nearby rock, his little horn gleaming softly. The small rabbit let out a cheerful squeak.

Cindy smiled. "All right, Puff. Time for some practice!"

?

The Dance of the Wind

She lifted higher, focusing on her first new skill: Air Step.

Her wings beat once — and instead of drifting, she walked on the air itself. Each step left behind a faint shimmer, like ripples on invisible water.

"Oh... wow," she breathed. "It's like walking on clouds."

With a laugh, she leapt upward again, stringing her steps together in a dance of light. The air carried her effortlessly. Then she spread her wings and whispered,

"Wind Blade!"

A sharp gust shot forward, slicing through the leaves of a tree branch. The cut was clean and smooth, like silk. Cindy gasped.

"That was... stronger than I expected."

She glanced at Puff and grinned. "I guess I'm a little dangerous now."

The rabbit twitched its nose proudly, as if sharing her excitement.

But their peaceful morning didn't last long.

?

The Forest's Cry

The wind shifted suddenly—thick with tension. Cindy froze midair. The usual hum of mana grew sharp and uneasy.

Something was wrong.

From the west side of the grove, a low growl echoed through the trees. Birds scattered. Leaves trembled.

"Puff... stay close," she whispered.

A moment later, a dark creature emerged from the shadows. It was like a wolf made of bark and shadow, its eyes burning green with wild mana.

[Appraisal]

Name: Corrupted Wood Wolf

Level: 9

Type: Beast (Corrupted)

Threat: Moderate

Cindy's wings stiffened. "A corruption beast..."

The creature snarled, snapping branches beneath its paws as it advanced. The forest itself seemed to recoil from its presence — the flowers dimming, the air heavy.

Cindy's heart raced. She wasn't a fighter, but she couldn't run.

The Elder Tree had trusted her with this grove.

She took a deep breath. "All right, let's protect our home."

?

Battle in the Grove

The wolf lunged. Cindy darted aside, her body blurring with Evasion Up.

Wind gathered at her wingtips as she spun midair.

"Wind Blade!"

A crescent of air struck the wolf's shoulder, slicing its bark-fur. The creature howled, stumbling but not falling. It turned and pounced again.

"Too close!" she gasped. She conjured a gust with Gentle Breeze, redirecting its leap just enough for it to crash into a root instead.

Puff, seeing her in danger, leapt forward — his tiny horn glowing with earthen light.

"Puff, no—!"

The rabbit struck the ground, and roots shot up, wrapping around the wolf's hind legs. The beast thrashed, howling in frustration.

"Good job!" Cindy shouted. "Now—let's finish this together!"

She soared higher, wings shimmering. The air pulsed around her as she focused every ounce of mana she had.

Dozens of petals from nearby flowers lifted into the air, carried by her wind.

"Wind Blade — scatter!"

She released them all at once. The petals turned into tiny blades of air, swirling like a storm. The corrupted wolf roared one last time before the gale overwhelmed it, dissolving its form into fading motes of green light.

The grove fell silent again.

?

The Gift of Growth

Cindy landed lightly beside Puff, her heart still racing.

"We... did it."

She looked around — the corruption's stain was fading, and the forest was breathing freely once more. A soft, familiar voice echoed through the wind.

"You protected the grove well, child of spirit."

The Elder Tree's voice resonated gently through the air.

"Your bond with nature deepens. And your companion's courage has awakened something long dormant."

Cindy turned to Puff, whose little horn was now glowing brighter than ever. The earth beneath him shimmered, and a system window appeared.

Cindy's eyes widened. "Puff, you too?"

When the light faded, he looked up at her with bright golden eyes and let out a cheerful, chiming squeak.

Cindy gazed up at the canopy, her wings glimmering. "From a nurse... to a butterfly... to a guardian. I never thought I'd feel this alive again."

Puff nuzzled her wing softly. Together, they watched as the grove bloomed brighter than before, the sunlight dancing through the leaves.

And as the day faded, the wind whispered her name — a promise of growth, of change, and of more skies waiting to be explored.
