Volume 1 Chapter 14 - The Night the Wind Roared

The night in Windrest was calm — almost too calm.

Lanterns flickered softly in the windows, and the rhythmic creak of the windmills filled the air. The villagers had gone to sleep early, tired after a long day of harvest.

Cindy sat on a tree branch overlooking the village, her wings folded neatly. The cool breeze played with her silver-blue hair-like antennae as she closed her eyes, enjoying the quiet.

Puff rested beneath her, tail twitching.

But suddenly —

Rustle.

Cindy's antennae twitched.

The wind carried faint sounds — whispers, footsteps, the creak of leather and steel brushing against cloth.

Her eyes snapped open, glowing faintly. "Someone's out there."

Puff's ears perked up immediately.

They both turned toward the western fields — the farthest edge of Windrest, where the road vanished into forest shadows.

?

The Bandits' Approach

Cindy rose quietly, wings spreading wide as she glided above the treetops. From the darkness, she saw it — faint movements, flickers of torchlight.

Her heart sank.

Dozens of rough figures moved through the fields in silence.

Dirty armor. Rusted weapons. Ragged cloaks.

She counted at least fifty.

Cindy's eyes narrowed. "They're organized... and strong."

Her wings trembled slightly with unease. "Fifty of them against a small village like this..."

Puff hopped beside her and growled softly, low and serious.

"Yeah," she said, voice firming, "we can't let them hurt anyone."

The wind stirred in answer, swirling around her like a promise.

?

The First Strike

The bandits crept closer, whispering to one another.

"Once we get their food and livestock, we're out. No need to kill unless they resist," the leader muttered.

But before he could take another step, a soft voice echoed from above — carried by the night wind.

"You shouldn't have come here."

They looked up — and froze.

A glowing butterfly descended from the dark sky, wings wide and shimmering with lightning-like veins. Her voice was calm, yet sharp as a blade.

"Windrest is under my protection."

The leader sneered. "A spirit bug thinks she can scare us?"

He swung his sword — and instantly regretted it.

Cindy's wings pulsed once, and the air exploded around him.

"Storm Edge!"

A razor wind burst from her wings, slicing through grass and armor alike. The front line of bandits was thrown back with cries of pain, weapons scattering.

The air crackled. Blue sparks of lightning danced in her wake.

?

The Battle Begins

"Get her! Don't let that thing near the village!" the leader roared.

Dozens charged forward — blades flashing.

But Cindy's wings moved faster than the human eye. Each beat summoned whirlwinds, tearing through their formation.

"Wind Barrier!" she called, forming a dome of spiraling air around the path to Windrest. Every arrow and dagger that flew toward it bounced harmlessly away.

She glared through the storm. "You will not touch them."

From the ground, Puff leaped into the fray. Roots burst from the soil at his command, tripping the bandits' feet. His horn glowed with a pale light as he rammed a shield-bearer aside with surprising force.

Cindy caught sight of him and smiled briefly. "Good work, Puff!"

"Now... my turn."

Her wings pulsed again — brighter, louder, fiercer.

"Storm Edge – Second Form: Gale Spiral!"

The air around her twisted into a roaring cyclone that cut through the bandit ranks. Men screamed as weapons were torn from their hands and hurled into the night.

One by one, they fell — unconscious, disarmed, or worse.

Only the leader remained standing, trembling as he watched his comrades collapse.

?

The Leader's Desperation

He gritted his teeth, blood dripping from his arm. "You damn spirit... I'll—"

Cindy's eyes flashed. "Enough."

She flapped once. The pressure of the wind alone forced him to his knees.

Lightning crackled in her wings as her voice lowered. "You came to steal and harm those who never wronged you. For that, I'll give you what you gave others — fear."

A final gust swept through the field, the force of it shattering his sword and knocking him unconscious.

When silence fell, all that remained was the whisper of the wind — and Cindy's glowing wings beneath the moonlight.

?

Aftermath

Moments later, the villagers awoke to the sound of distant thunder. When they arrived at the fields, they found Cindy and Puff standing among the fallen bandits.

Not a single home was touched.

Not one life was lost.

Cindy turned toward the elder as he approached. "They're gone. The village is safe."

The old man bowed deeply. "Windrest owes you both more than words can say."

Cindy smiled softly. "Just keep living peacefully. That's enough thanks for me."

As dawn began to break, the system's familiar chime rang in her mind.

Cindy gasped, her wings fluttering with joy. "You sound exactly how I imagined you would!"

He grinned — or as close as a hare could manage. "Now I can finally tell you how often you worry too much."

She laughed, shaking her head. "And I can finally tell you to stop eating every carrot in sight."

The two of them burst into laughter beneath the sunrise, surrounded by calm winds and sleeping fields.

Windrest was safe again — because of the butterfly who guarded the skies, and the hare who spoke from the heart.
