Volume 1 Chapter 25 - Whispers of Velna

The mountain town of Velna sat like a crown upon the ridges — a cluster of cobblestone streets, wooden rooftops, and curling trails of chimney smoke rising into the crisp air.

Even from a distance, Cindy could smell the warmth of baked bread and the faint hum of mana crystals lighting the streets.

It was her first human settlement since awakening in this world.

And for the first time, she wasn't looking at monsters or ruins — but people.

A Town of Quiet Life

She perched on Puff's back, hidden beneath a soft hooded cloak she had woven from her silk-like threads.

Puff, now larger and sturdier, walked upright with a strange mix of pride and awkwardness.

His once fluffy hare body had changed — leaner, longer, his paws now like tiny hands, his posture like that of a toddler.

Cindy smiled at him. "You've really grown."

He puffed out his chest. "Of course! Evolution complete! I'm now... uh... 'Silverkin Puff, Version Two!'"

She giggled. "That's... not how naming works."

Cindy clapped her hands gently. "That's wonderful! You can walk quietly now!"

Puff grinned. "Yup! Stealthy as a whisper—"

He tripped over his own feet and fell face-first into the cobblestone.

"—ow."

Cindy sighed fondly. "Almost stealthy."

Exploring Velna

They moved through the morning bustle.

Merchants called out their wares — "Fresh fruit! Mana herbs! Tanned leather!" — while children played near the fountain, chasing each other with wooden swords.

Cindy's wings, hidden beneath her cloak, fluttered anxiously.

"Humans... they look so normal. Peaceful."

Puff looked around, his bright eyes scanning faces. "You sound surprised."

"I guess I am," she whispered. "After everything — monsters, ruins, storms — it feels strange that people can just live like this."

They passed a baker's stall, where a kind woman smiled at them. "You two travelers? You look exhausted. Want a roll? Half price for cuties."

Cindy blinked, startled. "Oh— um, thank you!"

She handed a few copper coins she had found earlier in the forest ruins.

The woman winked. "You've got kind eyes, dear. Be careful on the road — strange rumors have been flying lately."

"Rumors?" Cindy asked softly.

The woman leaned closer. "They say a butterfly spirit has been seen near the mountain forests. Some claim she heals the injured. Others say she curses those who hunt her."

Cindy froze.

Puff, chewing his bread roll, looked at her nervously. "...We're so doomed."

She smiled weakly. "Let's just keep quiet."

Observing Humanity

They wandered through the town's edge, where the windmills turned lazily in the breeze.

Cindy sat on a fence post, watching farmers harvest golden grains glowing faintly with mana.

"I never realized," she murmured, "how beautiful ordinary life can be."

Puff tilted his head. "You mean, without danger?"

She nodded. "Without fear. Just... living."

The wind brushed her hair, and for a moment she closed her eyes, listening — laughter, footsteps, music from a distant tavern.

Something inside her — the same part that once belonged to a nurse who cared for people — felt warm.

"Maybe this is why I was sent here," she whispered. "Not just to fight or survive... but to see what's worth protecting."

Puff's Growth

That night, they found a quiet inn near the outskirts.

The innkeeper, a kind old man with a soft voice, offered them a small attic room — "Cheaper for small travelers," he said with a wink.

Inside, the two sat on the wooden floor, eating stew and warm bread.

Puff stretched his small arms. "You know... this body feels weird. Like I'm a kid again."

Cindy giggled. "That's because you kind of are."

He stuck out his tongue. "Then you're my mom now."

She blinked. "Wait, what—?"

"Mommy Cindy," he said, grinning.

Cindy buried her face in her hands, her cheeks turning pink. "You're impossible."

Puff laughed softly and looked out the window, his small face illuminated by the moonlight.

"You know," he said, quieter now, "it feels nice... being among people. Like we belong, even if just for a little while."

Cindy smiled gently. "Yeah... it really does."

End of the Day

The town of Velna slept peacefully beneath the stars.

Cindy leaned against the window frame, wings hidden but glowing faintly under her cloak.

The wind hummed softly around her — calm, steady, alive.

She didn't notice the faint shimmer above the rooftops — a small crystal bird watching from afar before vanishing into sparks.

Far beyond the horizon, someone else had begun to take interest in the Healer of Winds.

But for now, Cindy allowed herself a rare moment of peace.
