Volume 2 Chapter 4 - The Voice of the Stone
Night came early in Rothern Hollow.
The clouds hung heavy over the mountains, and even the stars hid behind the thick shroud of mist. The wind was still — almost as if the world itself held its breath.
Cindy sat by the window of her small inn room, staring out at the sleeping village. The faint orange glow of lanterns shimmered on the wet cobblestone paths below. Puff was fast asleep, softly snoring atop a pillow, while the fragment of stone she had carried pulsed quietly on the table beside her.
She reached out and touched it.
The pulse matched her heartbeat again.
Thrum... thrum... thrum...
Then the whisper came — low, like a voice heard through solid ground.
"Child of wind... the earth remembers you."
Cindy's eyes widened. She rose slowly, looking toward the sealed mine entrance in the distance. The mark on her wrist began to glow faintly, bathing the room in a soft turquoise light.
"Come... below..."
?
The Dream Beneath the Ground
Her body felt heavy — then light.
Before she realized it, the world around her dissolved into mist.
Cindy was standing in a vast underground world, a cathedral carved of crystal and stone. Enormous pillars of amber and jade reached upward like frozen lightning, and glowing streams of energy flowed through the cracks in the floor.
At the far end stood a massive figure — half-buried in the wall of the cavern. Its form was shaped like a titan of rock and soil, eyes like molten bronze, a crown of moss and roots upon its head.
Terranox.
He stirred, and the entire chamber trembled.
"Wind... has returned."
Cindy bowed instinctively. "Spirit of Earth... you called for me?"
The giant's eyes dimmed and flared again.
"The balance breaks once more. Fire burns through my veins. The roots scream. The Order seeks the Core... and I cannot wake."
Cindy's chest tightened. "Then let me help you."
"You carry the wind's memory. But you are not yet whole. The song of harmony is broken."
"Then tell me how to restore it!" she pleaded.
The spirit's voice became softer — almost mournful.
"Find my heart. The Stone of Genesis. The humans mined too deep and broke the seal. If the fire consumes it... the land will turn to ash."
Cindy looked up in awe — and fear. "Where is it?"
"Beneath the Hollow. Guarded by my shade."
Then, the cavern cracked — the dream shaking apart like shattered glass.
?
Awakening
Cindy gasped and sat upright. Morning light streamed faintly through the window. Puff was awake already, sitting by her side.
"You were glowing again," Puff said quietly. "Your mark was shining like the sun."
Cindy took a deep breath. "Terranox spoke to me."
Puff blinked. "You mean actually spoke?"
She nodded. "He said the Order of Embers is trying to corrupt his heart — something called the Stone of Genesis. It's sealed under this village."
Puff's expression darkened. "Then that's what they're after. No wonder the mountains are shaking."
Cindy stood, fastening her cloak. "We need to find Lirael. She might know how to reach it."
?
The Empty House
They hurried to Lirael's home at the edge of the village — a quiet cottage woven with vines and stone charms. But the door stood open, swinging gently in the wind.
Inside, the room was cold. The hearth had long gone out. The faint scent of earth and herbs lingered — but there was no sign of Lirael.
Only one thing remained on the table: a small, glowing shard of crystal wrapped in cloth.
Cindy picked it up. "This is... her magic."
Puff hopped to her shoulder, eyes narrowing. "She wouldn't just leave it behind."
Cindy looked around, her instincts sharpening. "No... she was taken."
Just then, the ground trembled — a low rumble that made dust fall from the beams above. Outside, villagers shouted as the earth began to quake again.
Cindy ran out into the street. Cracks split through the cobblestones, glowing faintly with red light — fire beneath the soil.
Puff gasped. "The Order's ritual!"
?
The Voice Rises
The tremor deepened. From the direction of the mines came a blinding light — molten red and gold, twisting into the sky like a column of fire.
Cindy shielded her eyes as heat swept across the valley. A dark figure appeared at the center of the light — cloaked, chanting in an ancient tongue.
"By the ember's core... awaken the chained heart of earth!"
The seal on the mine shattered.
Cindy's wings flared open as wind magic swirled around her. "Puff! We have to stop them before Terranox's heart is destroyed!"
Puff nodded, eyes blazing. "Then let's fly!"
The two shot forward, wind and light streaking across the burning horizon. The once-quiet mountain now raged — its voice booming from beneath.
"The earth... remembers..."
