Volume 2 Chapter 5 - The Heart Beneath the Hollow

The ground shook violently beneath their feet as Cindy and Puff descended into the mines.

The narrow tunnels were illuminated by veins of glowing crystal — some pulsing red, others a sickly orange hue that bled through the walls like molten veins.

The deeper they went, the stronger the heat became. Cindy could taste ash in the air.

"Cindy," Puff said between breaths, "I think the Order's already inside."

"I know," she replied, her tone steady but sharp. "We have to hurry before the seal breaks completely."

The tunnels echoed with distant chanting. A low, rhythmic hum that resonated in her bones. Each word felt wrong, unnatural — forcing the mana of the earth to twist and burn.

The Broken Seal

They emerged into a vast underground chamber — a cavern so large it could swallow a castle.

At its center stood a colossal crystal heart, half-buried in stone. It glowed with deep, earthen light — golden-brown and alive, pulsing with slow, heavy rhythm. But fire had already begun to consume it. Crimson cracks spread like infected wounds across its surface.

Around the heart stood five robed figures from the Order of Embers, their hands raised, chanting in unison. Floating between them was Lirael — her body encased in a prison of glowing runes.

"Lirael!" Cindy shouted.

The cultists turned in unison. One, their leader, raised his staff — a rod crowned with burning crystal. His voice echoed with eerie calm.

"So the false spirit of wind arrives at last. You're too late. The fire of purification has already touched the Heart of Earth."

Cindy's eyes narrowed. "You have no idea what you're unleashing."

"Oh, but we do," he sneered. "When fire consumes earth, the ashes will give rise to rebirth. Our rebirth."

He slammed his staff into the ground — and the entire chamber roared to life.

?

The Corrupted Guardian

The crystal heart pulsed violently, sending out a shockwave of mana. The cultists were thrown back as the ground split apart.

From beneath the shattered stone rose a massive golem, its body a grotesque fusion of rock and magma, eyes burning with crimson fire. It towered over them, its roar shaking the cavern.

Cindy's wings burst open, filling the air with wind and light. "Puff, we can't let it reach the heart!"

"On it!" Puff leapt from her shoulder, energy gathering around him. His fur stood on end as he released a burst of magic — wind blades slicing toward the golem.

But the creature barely flinched. Its molten hide absorbed the attacks like water on hot steel.

Cindy clenched her fists. "We'll do this together."

?

Wind and Flame

She raised her hands. "Skill: Tempest Spiral!"

A raging vortex of air exploded around her, slamming into the golem and forcing it back. Dust and shards of crystal swirled in the storm. But the creature responded with its own fury — molten projectiles raining down like fiery meteors.

Cindy dodged nimbly, wings flaring. The heat singed her cloak, but she refused to slow.

Puff landed beside her, panting. "We're not making a dent!"

The mark on Cindy's wrist flared suddenly. She glanced down — it was glowing brighter than ever before, as if reacting to something within Puff.

"Puff...?"

The small hare trembled. His body shimmered with radiant light — soft blue mixed with gold. His voice came through her mind, calm yet fierce.

"Cindy... I think it's happening again."

The light engulfed him completely.

?

Puff's Evolution

The cavern rumbled as the evolution began. The cultists froze in awe, even the corrupted golem momentarily hesitating as pure mana flooded the chamber.

Cindy shielded her eyes from the brilliance. "Puff!"

When the light faded, a new figure stood beside her — taller, standing on two legs now, with sleek fur of shimmering white and faint streaks of blue light running along his arms. His eyes gleamed with intelligence, and translucent energy-like ears extended upward like wings of light.

He smiled softly. "I think I leveled up."

Cindy's lips parted in shock. "You—Puff... you look..."

He flexed his fingers, mana swirling around him. "Like I can actually help you better."

The Battle for the Heart

Cindy and Puff moved in perfect sync.

Puff raised his hands, summoning orbs of silver light that orbited around him. Cindy channeled wind magic through them, transforming the orbs into spinning blades of air and moonlight.

"Now!"

They struck the golem in unison. The combined spell carved through its molten armor, releasing bursts of searing steam. The creature staggered, its core exposed — the burning crystal pulsing like a second heart.

Cindy took her chance.

"Skill: Gentle Breeze — Pierce Form!"

The wind compressed into a single, spiraling beam — sharp enough to cut through steel. It struck the golem's chest, driving straight through the core.

A thunderous explosion followed.

The chamber trembled violently as the golem collapsed, its body crumbling into shards of stone and cooling magma.

?

The Heart Restored

As the dust settled, Cindy ran toward the great crystal heart. She reached out and placed both hands on its surface.

Her mark glowed, and the red cracks began to fade — replaced by the soft, natural glow of golden light.

"Wind... and Earth... reunite once more..."

The deep voice resonated again, not from the heart, but from the mountain itself.

Terranox's essence pulsed through the cavern, his voice softer now, but still vast and powerful.

"You have done well, child of wind. My heart stirs, but my body remains bound. The fire's corruption still lingers in the depths."

Cindy closed her eyes. "Then we'll find a way to free you completely."

"The balance begins to return. And the moonlight has awakened beside you... guardian of tides and wind."

Puff looked down, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. "He's talking about me, isn't he?"

Cindy laughed softly. "Looks like it."

?

The Aftermath

The cultists were gone — vanished into shadows before the explosion had even cleared. Only faint scorch marks and fragments of their robes remained.

Cindy freed Lirael from the rune prison, who fell weakly to her knees.

"Thank you," Lirael whispered. "The Heart is stable again... for now. But they'll return. The Order won't stop until the balance is completely shattered."

Cindy nodded grimly. "Then we'll be ready."

She glanced at Puff, who now stood beside her like a radiant guardian of light.

"Together."

The mountain's rumbling faded into stillness. For the first time in days, the air felt calm — alive, and peaceful.
