Volume 2 Chapter 26 - Embers Stirring Beneath the Veil
The night over Aurelion Kingdom was silent.
Too silent.
The moon hung pale and thin like a dying ember, its light struggling to pierce the clouds that had gathered thickly above the capital. Deep beneath the land — far below the dungeons, the stone veins, and the forgotten ruins — something began to pulse.
A faint heartbeat.
Slow. Ancient. Hungry.
?
The Stirring of Flame
Miles away in the Volcanic Frontier, the air shimmered with heat.
The once-slumbering craters of Mount Valgon began to tremble, releasing rivers of molten light that snaked across the black stone. Within the mountain's heart, crimson crystals cracked and bled glowing liquid mana.
From within those cracks, a voice whispered — fragmented, chaotic.
"...The seal... breaks... the ashes remember..."
The crystals pulsed like veins, spreading their corruption outward.
Beasts nearby—wolves, serpents, and even birds—turned wild, their eyes glowing the same sinister red. They screamed, and the air thickened with smoke and rage.
In the depths of that inferno, a massive shadow shifted.
A fragment of the Primordial Fire Spirit — not yet the true Ignis, but a shard of his divine wrath — began to awaken.
The fragment took form, a half-born being of molten flame and embered wings. It let out a low, guttural roar, shaking the entire range.
"Who... disturbs my slumber...?"
The corrupted essence began to seep into the land, twisting everything it touched.
?
The Followers of Flame
Far below the volcano, inside a hidden temple carved of obsidian, cloaked figures knelt before a floating core of red crystal. The air was alive with sparks, each one humming with unstable mana.
One of the figures raised his head, his eyes glowing with fanatic devotion.
"The Fragment of Ignis awakens. The prophecy unfolds."
Another figure trembled. "But my lord, the Spirit Envoy of Wind has been chosen. The others are moving—the Earth, the Water—"
The leader smiled darkly beneath his hood.
"Then let them move. The flame will consume them all. Even the wind cannot outfly fire."
He raised his hand, and the crimson crystal flared, sending streams of molten light into the sky above the volcano.
"Spread the corruption. Feed the flame with mana and despair. When the seal shatters completely, our god shall return."
All around the chamber, the followers began to chant.
A low, rhythmic echo filled the cavern, merging with the thunder of the volcano.
"Ignis... Ignis... Flame of Beginning... Burn the false world anew..."
?
In the Capital
Back in the capital, Cindy awoke suddenly in her chamber, heart pounding.
She felt it — a surge of mana, hot and angry, somewhere far west. The wind whispered through the open window, carrying a faint scent of sulfur and smoke.
Puff stirred beside her, his ears twitching. "Cindy... did you feel that too?"
She nodded slowly, her expression tightening.
"Yes. The fire... it's moving."
She stood and looked out the window, the horizon faintly glowing red.
For a moment, she saw a vision — flames coiling into the shape of wings, a blazing eye opening within the volcano's shadow.
And within her heart, the whisper of the wind grew urgent.
"The next storm begins, child of air. The fire has awakened..."
Cindy clenched her fist. "Then we don't have much time."
?
Meanwhile... Beneath the Mountain
Deep within Mount Valgon, the molten creature — the Corrupted Fragment of Fire — fully opened its eyes.
It did not yet have a name, but its will was clear:
to burn away the weakness of the world, to reclaim the glory of its creator, and to prepare the way for the true awakening of Ignis, the Primordial Flame.
It looked to the surface, its molten form trembling with power.
"Soon... my master will awaken... and the world will know fire once more."
The magma churned violently, sending fiery veins racing across the land. The wind carried the first traces of ash toward Aerith Vale.
And far away, Cindy's butterfly mark began to glow — a sign that the next trial had begun.
