Chapter 4 The Ride Home
The banquet ended.
My sober childhood friend drove me home.
I opened the back door and saw Ji Chuan already sitting there.
When drunk, Ji Chuan didn’t talk much. He just stared with those dark, cold eyes.
“He’s completely out of it. Mind if we take him back together, Lin Xia Yi?”
I slid into the car and sat down.
Ji Chuan’s hand stayed suspended between us the whole time.
The drive back to the city was long.
I leaned my head against the window and closed my eyes.
Every time the car jolted, my shoulder lightly bumped his.
I didn’t mind.
In the reflection of the window, Ji Chuan’s face appeared. He kept staring at the unfamiliar distance between us, expression unreadable.
We arrived at my building.
Ji Chuan insisted on walking me upstairs.
“No need.”
He ignored me, voice flat and cold.
“If something happens to you, we’d all be responsible.”
In the elevator, he leaned against the wall. The alcohol seemed to hit harder. He tugged his tie loose.
“My mom’s match seems pretty decent. Why refuse him?”
He lifted his chin slightly and looked down at me, eyes searching.
“Not good enough?”
“So what type do you actually like?”
He asked even though he already knew—or maybe he just liked asking.
“Someone like me?”
I met his gaze through the elevator mirror.
“I don’t like that anymore.”
“Then the opposite—someone like Song Zhong Zheng?”
My eyes froze.
He said, “Too late. He’s getting engaged.”
Ji Chuan leaned closer.
“Lin Xia Yi, since we’re both going on blind dates anyway… how about we give it a try?”
He bent down to look straight into my eyes.
“You’re not telling me you’ve been waiting for me to say that, are you?”
“I haven’t.”
I looked up at him seriously.
“The day we ended things, I made it very clear. I won’t like you again.”
“Really?”
He slipped one hand into his pocket and gave a lazy smile.
“Good.”
“Don’t just marry someone random to forget me.”
Ji Chuan acted completely indifferent, yet he still said the prettiest words while being utterly scummy.
His tone sounded so sincere:
“I want more than anyone for you to marry someone who truly loves you.”
“I’ll definitely bless you.”
