Chapter 5 He Was Never Drunk

Ji Chuan walked downstairs and leaned against the car, watching until my window light turned on.

He hadn’t actually drunk anything.

His glass had only been flat Sprite the whole night.

“Move over.”

He tapped the driver’s seat.

He took his keys back and told our friend, “I’ll drive you home.”

“Why do you bother?”

Our friend slid into the passenger seat, hesitating.

“It’s been three years since you two ended things, and your mouth is still that sharp. How are you so sure she’ll keep liking you forever?”

City lights streaked past the windows.

“I just know.”

The car fell silent for a long time—so long our friend was almost asleep.

Then Ji Chuan spoke quietly.

“We never actually broke up.”

“She only said we were done. She never said we broke up.”

Our friend was speechless. “Have you two even dated?”

“How does that not count?”

“It doesn’t count at all.” Our friend sat up straight. “She watched how you chased your first love. She knows exactly what you look like when you really like someone.”

“Ji Chuan, you’re way too confident. You’re just relying on how much she indulged you back in school.”

“She’ll fall for someone else eventually.”

Ji Chuan gave a light, dismissive laugh.

“She can’t.”

Our friend didn’t argue anymore. He changed the subject.

“Song Zhong Zheng’s engagement is this Saturday. You going?”

“Of course I’m going.” Ji Chuan smiled. “Why wouldn’t I? I want to ask him myself why he didn’t invite me.”
