Chapter 37
APRIL
The ride home from dinner was brutal.
I’d try to make small talk, but David’s mind was elsewhere.
And I knew why.
There was only one reason someone had broken into his car while we were at dinner: because David had ordered them to. And there’s only one reason David would have ordered them to do it: to search my phone.
I should have resisted more when David had suggested we leave our phones in his car. In the moment, though, it had made sense. He had all those unread texts, and if he could go through an entire dinner without checking his phone, then so could I.
Once I saw the man opening the car door, I knew I’d been set up. I’ll bet my fucking husband had intentionally not read any of his texts to use that as our excuse to leave the phones. That would be a total David thing to do.
What could he find?
On the one hand, I’d never texted Eddie. Shit, I didn’t even have his phone number. I’d also never told anyone else about the affair, including Margie.
But I had made one big mistake, and it suddenly hit home.
I hadn’t turned my phone off when I arrived at Hotel Pico the last several Tuesdays.
Fuck.
When I got home, I changed into something more comfortable.
Ten minutes later, I saw David, and his face gave him away. He knew I’d cheated.
I was certain of it.
