GLOSSARY
Wildflower Ridge is a New Zealand based sheep and beef farm and as such, this book uses New Zealand spelling and language. I’ve included some Kiwi-isms and farming terms in this glossary to help you out.
Bale feeder - a farming implement for distributing large round silage or hay bales
Bench - a kitchen counter
Bush - native forest
Feeding out - the process of delivering stock feed to the paddocks
Fetlocks - joints in a horse’s legs, essentially their ankles
Gumboots - wellington/rubber boots
Hereford - a breed of beef cattle that is a reddish colour with white face and markings
Manual car - a vehicle with stick shift transmission
Paddock - a fenced off field to keep stock in
Ranchslider - a sliding glass door
Rippers and Power harrow - tractor-pulled farming implements for cultivating ground, ready for planting crops
Sheep and Beef farm - a Kiwi farm that raises both sheep and cattle for beef
Side-by-side - an all terrain farm vehicle
Silage - a grass-based feed for cattle
Toasted sandwich - like a grilled cheese
Ute - a ‘utility vehicle’, commonly referred to as a pick up truck in other parts of the world
