She stands with her back to the door I’ve just sealed, her spine rigid with fury, the knife from her boot still gripped in her hand, and all I can think is: finally.
Finally she knows. After years of perfect control, she sees what I am, and instead of running, she’s here.
Trapped with me. Being seen by her, truly seen, makes my blood burn hotter than rage ever could.
"Open it." Her voice cuts through the space between us, but I hear what she doesn't say. The slight tremor underneath the command. The catch between open and it that tells me her body is already responding to being caged.
"No." I stay positioned between her and the shelf with the exit fob, my body a wall she'd have to go through. "We need to talk."
"Talk?" Her laugh is sharp. "You've been watching me through holes in my wall. You violated—"
"Everything. Yes." The admission feels like release, like finally exhaling after holding my breath for years.
My hands shake slightly as I move toward the bar cart, keeping myself strategically between her and any possible exit.
"Would you like a drink? Bourbon? That wine from yesterday you pretended not to love? "
I pour amber liquid into crystal, the ordinary gesture obscene against the magnitude of what's breaking between us. "Sit. Have a drink with me. Let me tell you a story."
"Fuck your story." She won't move from her position by the door, won't pretend this is civilized. The knife stays in her hand, ready. "And fuck your drink."
"The wine then? You liked the Sancerre at—"
"I said no."
The refusal makes my cock throb. She won't take anything I offer, won't play at normal while her world tilts off its axis.
But I see what she's trying to hide. Her nipples press against her shirt, peaked and obvious.
The flush spreading down that elegant throat.
The slight part of her lips that isn't just fury.
I take a sip of bourbon, letting it burn. "Then just listen."
"How long have you been watching me?" Her voice shakes with rage. "How long have you been—"
"Nine years." The confession pours out. "Nine years since I first saw you."
"What?" The word comes out strangled. "We met five years ago. When I started at La Sirena."
"That's when you noticed me." The bourbon can't wash away what I'm about to do.
"But I've been watching since long before that.
Since a party nine years ago. You wore black, obviously.
Hair down for once. You looked lost and dangerous and perfect, and I knew immediately you'd consume my entire life. "
The party. The lie burns in my mouth. My mind flashes to the real first time.
Sun on rocks, blood spreading, fourteen years ago when she was just a girl who didn't know I was watching her world shatter.
But that truth would destroy her. Might destroy us both.
So I give her nine years instead of fourteen, a party instead of a murder scene, simple attraction instead of complicity.
She moves closer, and I grip the edge of the bar cart to keep from reaching for her. The knife stays ready in her hand. She’s calculating — grip tightening by degrees, weight easing onto her back foot. Looking for the angle, the moment to strike.
"What party?" Her confusion is genuine, searching her memory. "I don't remember any—"
"A Blenheim party. You were working the bar, freelance.
Probably don't remember because why would you?
Just another rich family throwing money around.
" I move closer still, close enough to smell her soap, that plain clean scent that haunts me.
"But I was there, twenty-two and stupid and completely destroyed by the sight of you. "
"I wasn't…" She trails off, and I watch her try to rebuild her own history with this new information. "That was before La Sirena. I was freelancing then, working different events. But how did you—"
"I made sure our paths crossed again. Made sure you ended up exactly where I could watch over you."
Her eyes widen. "The job at La Sirena?"
Now we're getting to it. The meat of what I need her to know. My devotion, laid bare.
"The position was never supposed to be yours." I abandon the glass, needing my hands free, even if they're shaking. "There was another candidate. Sophia somebody. Better resume, knew the right people. The job was basically hers."
Isa's knuckles go white around the knife handle. "What did you do to her?"
"I created an opportunity she couldn't refuse.
Salary doubled, Manhattan address, the kind of prestige that makes Miami look provincial.
" I move closer, unable to stop myself. The heat radiating from her skin makes me dizzy.
"She was on a plane within forty-eight hours, probably still wondering how she got so lucky.
Then I made sure your name landed on the right desk at the right moment.
Whispered in the right ears about your competence, your discretion.
How perfect you'd be behind that particular bar. "
"You engineered it." Not a question. A world reshaping itself.
"The opening, the timing, the recommendation.
All of it." Another step closer. She doesn't retreat.
"Just like I arranged for your apartment to become available when you needed it.
Like I made sure certain opportunities found you over the years.
The vintage bar tools you found at that estate sale?
I bought them first, had them placed where you'd find them.
Bought the entire estate just to make sure you'd get those specific pieces. "
Her free hand clenches into a fist. "My entire life—"
"Your choices were always yours, Isa. I just… curated the options."
"That's not—" She cuts herself off, breathing hard. The flush on her skin deepens, spreading down beneath her collar where I want to follow it with my tongue. "Nine years. You've been doing this for nine years."
"Since the moment I saw you at that party." Another lie stacked on lie, but some truths would kill us both. "Where you became mine without knowing it."
She goes quiet, refitting years of luck into their true shape. Every break she caught, every door that opened, every piece of luck that landed just right. All of it suddenly revealed as my hand.
"Five years of friendship. Coffee every morning. That whole time you were—"
"Keeping you close. Keeping you safe. Making sure you had everything you needed."
"I didn't need you deciding my life!"
"Didn't you?" The words rip out of me, harsher than intended. "You needed that job. Needed stability, income, a place that would value your competence. I made sure you got it."
Fourteen years of perfect discipline, and now it's cracking apart in front of her. Part of me wants to grab the words back, rebuild the wall. But the larger part, the part that's been dying of thirst in the desert of her unknowing, drinks in her horror like salvation.
"You want to know the whole truth?" The confession pours out of me like blood from a wound.
"I know you switched from contacts to glasses three years ago but only wear them alone at 2 AM when you can't sleep.
I know you mouth the words to whatever's playing when you think no one's watching—always slightly behind the beat, like you're translating.
I know you sleep with one hand flat against the wall. "
Her breathing changes. Faster, shallower. The flush on her skin turns darker, and I want to taste it, want to know if her arousal tastes different from her fury.
My voice drops lower, rougher. "I know you fix broken things when you can't sleep. Starting with watches, then moving to larger mechanisms when the small ones don't quiet your mind. Know you've been planning escape routes since before you could name what you were running from."
"Stop." But the word comes out breathless, undermined by the way her body sways slightly toward mine.
"I know the sound you make when you come.
" The confession rips out of me, making my cock ache.
"Alone in your bed, thinking no one can hear.
That little gasp, like you're surprised by your own pleasure.
Then the silence after, when you lie completely still, like you're waiting for punishment that never comes. "
Her pupils dilate. Full dilation, the kind that means her body is answering even as her mind rebels. The knife trembles in her grip.
"You watched me—"
"Everything. Every moment I could steal.
" I'm close enough now to feel her breath on my skin, to see the pulse hammering in her throat.
"Nine years of studying you like you're the only holy text I'll ever need.
Learning you, protecting you, keeping you mine without you knowing you already belonged to me. "
The truth is destroying me and rebuilding me at once. Each confession makes my blood run hotter, makes my cock harder. Being seen by her after all these years of hiding, finally being known for exactly what I am. The relief floods through me like a drug, making me feel drunk.
And she's feeling it too. I can read it in every tell her body screams while her mouth stays angry.
The way her thighs press together. The slight arch in her back she doesn't realize she's making.
The way her breath catches every time I confess another violation.
My words are undoing her the same way her knowing is undoing me.
"This is sick," she says, but her voice cracks on the words.
"Is it?" I close the last distance between us, until the knife point touches my shirt.
"Or is it exactly what you've been craving?
Someone who sees all of you. Every sharp edge, every dark corner, every ugly truth you think makes you unlovable.
Someone who knows exactly what kind of monster you think you are and wants you because of it, not despite it. "
Her breath catches. That tiny sound I've memorized through walls, now happening right in front of me because of words I'm saying directly to her.
