Chapter Five Cassian
It’s finally Saturday. I get to spend the whole day with Zenovia.
I intend to make full use of it. I’ve seen her every day since I picked up my cookies from her house.
I might have only spent a few hours per day with her, but I feel like we know each other on a different level.
It’s not just physical, it's emotional as well.
Work has been good for both of us, but then again, it is only the start of the school year. This whole semester is jam-packed with activities, and I had to sign up for at least two. One is the Halloween dance in a couple of weeks. I’m hoping I can convince Zenovia to go with me.
The front door opens, and Jaylen walks in with a frown edge between his eyebrows. “What’s happened?” He snaps his head towards me as if only seeing me for the first time.
He shakes his head as he plops down next to me. “It’s a case. I can’t seem to wrap my head around it.”
“Tell me what you can.” I pull on my shoes before I lean forward, ready to listen to him.
“A couple was killed last night.” I gasp as he runs his hand over his face. “Something in the way they died seems familiar. I’ve seen it before. I just can’t place it.”
“So they were murdered?”
“I believe so, but my captain says it looks like murder suicide. The husband killed the wife before killing himself,” Jaylen adds.
“But you don’t believe it?”
He shakes his head. “No, I don’t. The way they were lying and the way they were killed didn’t make sense. To kill her with a knife and then cut your own throat while the gun was in the drawer. It doesn’t add up.”
He lets out a breath before he stretches.
“I’m going to look into this.” He gets up but stops before he turns towards me. “You’re going on your date, right?”
“Yes, I was just about to leave.” I also get up and grab my jacket. It’s not cold yet, but I’m not planning on coming home too early tonight. “I won’t be back early. I have a fun day planned for the two of us.” I smirk.
“I’m heading to bed. I need some sleep before I try to make sense of this case.”
Jaylen waves at me before he walks away.
I head to the front door, making sure to lock my door before I head to my truck.
I notice Valerie walking down the street.
I have no idea where she lives, but I know she doesn’t live on this street.
I start to pull out of my driveway when she notices me. She waves at me, and I stop and wave back.
“Hello, Mr. Austin. Do you live here?” She points at my house, and I try to find the right words.
“This is my friend's house.” It’s not that I don’t want her to know where I live. I just don’t know her yet. “Do you live around here?”
“No, my friend Evy lives down the street. I’m heading to her house.” She points down the street.
“Have a good day.” I smile and start to reverse more, but she doesn’t move. She just stares at me as I drive off. I don’t want to be late for my date with Zenovia.
I pull into Zenovia’s drive and jump out of my truck. She opens the door just as I make it to her door.
“Hello, Mr. Austin,” she says as I walk up and hug her.
I kiss the top of her head and pull away.
She looks up at me with those gorgeous eyes, and I lean down, brushing my lips softly over hers.
She melts right into me. I move my hand to the back of her head to deepen the kiss.
She tastes like strawberries and cream with a hint of coconut.
The sparks flying through me are electrifying.
I’ll be addicted to her taste before I know it.
Our lips move together as if they have been dancing like we’ve been doing it our whole lives.
She fits me like she was made for me. In the short week we have spent together, I can see myself being with her forever.
She brings out the best in me. She doesn’t put me down or want me to be someone else.
She loves that I’m a teacher and that I coach baseball.
I have my own little cheerleader right here in my arms.
I pull back as we both need air and she smiles up at me. It’s a smile I can’t describe. One that makes me fall even more. I’m not ready to say the words, but I’ll make sure she feels and sees it in my actions.
“Are you ready for our date?” I ask as I take her hand. She nods before she closes her door and we walk to my truck. I help her into my truck and jog around to the driver’s side.
