The air in the Tribunal chamber is a crushing weight, thick with the scent of burning cedar and the predatory tension of hundreds of immortal dark elves.

Standing directly behind the sweeping hem of Zhetrin’s thick black coat, I keep my back completely straight.

My silk gown brushes against my leather slippers while Eldric reads the trade tallies from the presentation table.

The Zagfer archivist’s voice echoes across the obsidian, dismantling Lord Kryven’s economic argument piece by piece.

But the numbers are irrelevant to me now. I engineered those sums.

Instead, I am reading the board.

The Lowtown alleys taught me to survive by calculating the silent language of predators, recognizing that a drawn blade is merely the final step in an equation beginning long before the steel leaves the scabbard.

Scanning the tiered seating rising above us, my attention tracks the shifting mass, the tightened jaws, and the subtle, nervous adjustments of the neutral lords.

They are entirely captivated by the staggering wealth Zhetrin’s new tariffs generate, the vote slipping completely out of Lord Kryven’s grasp.

Anchoring my attention to the eastern tier, I locate Kryven. The rival lord’s face is a rigid mask of fury, but his lethal interest does not rest on Eldric or Zhetrin. Instead, his dark eyes bore into the dense, shadowed aisles cutting through the lower benches.

Tracing his exact line of sight, the anomaly materializes.

A sovereign sentry occupies the base of the central aisle, a mere ten paces from our position. Clad in the thick silver breastplate and plumed helm of the High Assembly watch, the guard holds a ceremonial spear resting against the stone floor.

Yet, it is the grip that betrays him.

A true ceremonial guard wields a weapon loosely—a symbol of authority rather than an instrument of immediate violence.

This guard’s knuckles stretch stark white against the metal.

Clamping the shaft of the spear with a rigid, corded tension, he shifts his entire mass onto the balls of his feet, leaning slightly forward.

It is the offensive coil of a hound preparing to slip the leash.

Sliding his hand higher up the shaft of the spear, the silver gauntlet covering his wrist slips backward just a fraction of an inch, exposing the pale skin of his inner forearm.

The oxygen vanishes from my lungs.

A jagged brand mars the flesh just beneath the armor—a crude, twisted serpent eating its own tail.

It is the exact identical brand burned into the wrist of the mercenary who pinned me to the floor in the corridor of Zhetrin’s estate. The mark of the Dark Market flesh-brokers.

This is no sovereign watchman. He is an assassin wrapped in pristine, perfectly fitted sovereign armor.

Not stolen. Provided. Patriarch Varynth had personally equipped Kryven's flesh-brokers to bypass the hall's wards.

There is no time to calculate the full sum, nor the fractions required to warn Tharion.

The false guard detonates into motion. Dropping the dense ceremonial spear, the metal clatters uselessly against the stone steps. Moving with a fluid, terrifying Khuzuth velocity, he reaches beneath the folds of his silver cloak to withdraw a short, wicked blade forged from unpolished iron.

He does not lunge for me.

Launching himself forward, the assassin obliterates the ten paces in a split second, driving the iron blade directly toward the exposed, unarmored expanse of Zhetrin’s broad back.

"Zhet!" The scream tears from my throat, shattering the quiet of the cavernous chamber.

Bypassing conscious thought entirely, the massive discrepancy between my fragile, mortal body and the lethal force of a charging dark elf fails to register. Throwing myself forward, I slam both of my hands against the unyielding leather of Zhetrin’s coat.

I shove him with every ounce of adrenaline and desperate kinetic strength in my small frame.

The sheer, unexpected force of my impact throws the apex predator’s balance entirely off-center. Stumbling a single, massive step to the left, the towering Warlord's boots skid against the polished floor.

The assassin’s blade misses Zhetrin’s spine by a hairsbreadth.

Slicing violently through the empty air where the Sovereign's heart had just been, the mercenary’s momentum carries him uncontrollably forward, completely exposing his flank.

Zhetrin recovers instantly. The feral, catastrophic violence simmering beneath his skin erupts into absolute ruin. Refusing to draw his longblade, he twists sharply, bringing his brutal elbow down in a devastating strike directly against the assassin’s extended arm.

Bone shatters with a sickening crack. The iron blade clatters harmlessly to the stone.

Total chaos detonates within the Tribunal hall.

Screaming in panic, the neutral lords on the lower benches scramble backward over the obsidian seating. The oppressive, leaden pressure of hundreds of dark elves simultaneously flaring their magic turns the atmosphere into a volatile, freezing vacuum.

"Shield-wall!" Tharion's command cuts through the terror like a thunderclap.

The thirty Miou veterans of the Thosti vanguard move as a single, lethal organism.

Shedding their dense ceremonial cloaks entirely, they reveal the wickedly curved Khopesh daggers and serrated hunting knives issued in the armory.

Collapsing inward, the elite warriors form a tight, impenetrable ring of dark steel around Zhetrin and myself.

A violent, rushing sound rips through the air above us.

Snapping my chin upward, a second assassin, dressed in the light-absorbing gray leather of the Dark Market, drops directly from the high, shadowed balconies of the acoustic arches.

Plummeting toward the center of the shield-wall with twin daggers drawn, the lethal trajectory aims straight for my throat.

Tharion steps off the line. Catching the falling assassin mid-air, the guard captain drives his armored shoulder directly into the mercenary’s chest. The two dark elves crash onto the polished floor in a brutal tangle of limbs and steel.

Rolling swiftly to pin the assassin to the stone, Tharion drives his Khopesh dagger straight through the gray leather, ending the threat before the mercenary can even draw breath.

"Hold the line!" A demonic, overlapping vibration tears from Zhetrin's chest, shaking the floating alchemy spheres.

Standing over the first assassin who attempted the cowardly back-strike, he looks down at the mercenary writhing on the floor, clutching his shattered arm.

Zhetrin drops his iron-shod boot directly onto the assassin’s chest, pinning him to the obsidian, before drawing a serrated knife from his belt.

More shouts erupt from the western rotunda. Four more false guards shed their silver cloaks, drawing crude weapons to rush the outer ring of the Thosti shield-wall.

Engaging without hesitation, the Miou veterans transform the pristine, ancient hall of the High Council into a brutal, close-quarters slaughterhouse. The clash of Khuzuth steel rings deafeningly over the terrified shouts of the nobles.

Remaining directly behind Zhetrin's towering frame, my chest heaves, the adrenaline rushing violently in my ears. The apex predators of his vanguard butcher the oncoming assassins with ruthless, terrifying efficiency—refusing to subdue, fighting only to eradicate.

"Treason!" Pointing a trembling, armored finger toward the melee from the eastern tier, Lord Kryven attempts to play the outraged noble, feigning complete ignorance of the blood spilling across the floor.

"The Warlord’s presence brings assassins into the sacred hall!

Sovereign guard, execute the beast! Slay the mortal! "

"Stay behind me." Reaching backward, his large hand grips mine, physically hauling me closer to the solid, unyielding heat of his massive body.

He angles his gaze down to the assassin pinned beneath his boot.

The entire political structure of the Undercity balances on a razor's edge.

Varynth and Kryven engineered this bloodbath to mirror a random attack—a chaotic consequence of bringing a human into the High Assembly.

If the neutral lords swallow the lie, they will vote to execute us both to restore their precious peace.

Zhetrin presses the serrated edge of his knife directly against the assassin’s throat, applying precise pressure to draw a thin line of dark blood.

"Who purchased your steel?" Projecting the feral, vibrating rumble, Zhetrin's threat echoes clearly across the terrified, silent ranks of the neutral nobles. "Speak the name of the lord who paid you to defile this hall, or I will peel the flesh from your bones."

Choking under the crushing weight of the Warlord's boot, the assassin's terrified gaze darts frantically toward the eastern tier, anchoring directly onto Lord Kryven.
