Zhetrin
Choking beneath the crushing weight of my iron-shod boot, the assassin's frantic attention darts toward the eastern tier, pinning directly onto Lord Kryven’s crimson-clad form.
Pressing the serrated edge of my blade a fraction deeper into the mercenary’s throat, a thin, hot line of blood spills over the unpolished iron.
My magic flares, wrapping entirely around the assassin’s chest. "Speak the name."
The freezing pressure forces the air from his lungs, stripping away his defiance and leaving only the primal, desperate instinct to survive.
"Kryven!" The confession tears through the cavernous Tribunal chamber, amplified by the high acoustic arches. "Lord Kryven bought the steel! He paid the Dark Market brokers to flood the balconies! He ordered the slaughter to stop the Warlord’s claim!"
The silence that follows is not the stillness of peace. It is the vacuum of a drawing breath before a catastrophic detonation.
The neutral houses erupt.
The outrage is absolute and deafening. Rising from their obsidian benches, Lord Vane, Lady Sylas, and dozens of other unaligned nobles converge their voices into a furious roar.
To assassinate a rival in the darkness of the Lowtowns is an accepted, brutal reality of Khuzuth politics.
To smuggle unmarked hounds into the sacred hall, endangering the lives of every lord in attendance, is a treason demanding eradication.
"Restrain him!" Lady Nyxira thrusts her black-painted finger directly at Kryven. "Arrest the butcher!"
Realizing they have been compromised by the false sentries, the genuine sovereign guards surge forward to restore order. Two dozen polearms lower simultaneously, forming a ring of lethal steel around Lord Kryven.
All color drains from Kryven’s face, his arrogant, triumphant sneer completely shattering. Drawing his ceremonial blade proves a useless, pathetic gesture against the overwhelming force of the assembly watch closing in on him.
"It is a lie!" The rival lord's voice cracks wildly. Spinning toward the highest, central seat of the amphitheater, his desperation is palpable. "Patriarch Varynth! Tell them! Tell them you gave the blessing! You authorized the purge to cleanse the Thosti bloodline!"
The entire chamber anchors its collective, furious attention upward to the Patriarch.
Sitting upon his ancestral throne, Varynth rests his skeletal hands calmly upon the carved armrests. His white robes remain pristine. Devoid of shock, remorse, or loyalty, the Patriarch assesses Kryven with the cold, absolute detachment of a man watching a rabid hound being put down.
"You bring Dark Market filth into the High Assembly, Lord Kryven.
" Varynth projects a dry, condemning sorrow that makes the bile rise in my throat.
"And when the Warlord uncovers your treason, you attempt to cast your guilt upon my crown?
The Thosti bloodline does not deal with the shadows. You stand alone in your madness."
Varynth raises his hand, a sharp gesture to the sovereign guard. "Execute him."
A sound of pure, unhinged terror rips from Kryven's throat as the ring of polearms closes in.
Dismissing the rival lord's execution entirely, I step off the chest of the bleeding assassin and pivot away from the eastern tier. Tharion signals the vanguard, maintaining the tight, impenetrable shield-wall around Megan.
My gaze tracks down to her. Standing at my back, her amber irises remain completely clear, processing the rapid, violent shift of the board.
The indigo silk of her gown is unmarred, save for the faint smudge of dust from where she shoved me.
If she had not calculated the subtle, unnatural shift in the false guard’s posture, the iron blade would have severed my spine.
She saved my life without a single drop of magic.
"Kryven is broken." Her raspy observation barely carries over the shouts of the neutral lords.
"Kryven was only the hand." Tracking the high seats, my violet-ringed gaze fixates onto Patriarch Varynth sitting above the slaughter. "Varynth is the mind. He threw Kryven to the wolves to preserve his own ledgers."
Sliding the serrated blade back into its sheath, the feral, chaotic violence that tore through my veins during the ambush cools into a sharp, lethal absolute.
Varynth believes he has navigated the storm.
He believes he has sacrificed a pawn to appease the neutral houses and maintain his grip on the crown.
He does not know what rests in the brass cylinder currently held by my archivist.
"Eldric." The low rumble of my summons vibrates across the stone.
Stepping out from the protective ring of the Miou warriors, the Zagfer archivist is pale.
His hands tremble violently as he clutches the iron lockbox containing the restricted tomes Megan extracted from the lower vaults.
He knows that exposing those ledgers is an act of total, irreversible treason against the ancestral house.
"Bring the true sum to the table."
Swallowing hard, Eldric nods once and advances toward the polished stone presentation table.
Pivoting toward the high seats, my towering, seven-foot frame commands the center of the blood-stained floor.
Unleashing my magic, a sudden, concussive shockwave of force projects outward, slamming against the obsidian benches to physically crush the remaining nobles into silence.
The shouts die in their throats. The clash of steel in the eastern tier ceases as Kryven is dragged away in thick iron chains.
"The Tribunal convenes to vote upon the validity of my claim.
" The reverberation rings off the vaulted ceiling, striking the obsidian walls with absolute finality.
"Lord Kryven argued that my bond with this human destabilizes the realm.
He claimed she is a parasite. But it was not the mortal who brought assassins into this hall. "
Extending a gauntleted hand, I gesture to Megan. Stepping out from behind my sweeping coat, she stands fearlessly beside me in the light.
"It was the mortal who saw the flaw in the ledgers." Pinning Varynth with an inescapable, violent stare, I press the attack. "It was the mortal who stabilized the northern trade routes. And it is the mortal who found the rot buried deep within the foundation of the ancestral palace."
Varynth’s skeletal hands tighten on the armrests of his throne, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his severe features.
"The Patriarch claims the Thosti bloodline does not deal with the shadows." The glacial, carrying threat coats the air in frost. "He claims he did not authorize the slaughter today. The High Assembly will now decide if the Patriarch’s word holds more weight than his own signature."
A single nod toward Megan sets the execution in motion.
Approaching the presentation table, she refuses to tremble. The crushing, hostile attention of the gathered immortals fails to make her cower. Reaching into the iron lockbox, her small hands extract the iron-clasped tome of the restricted archives.
The massive ledger drops onto the stone table. The impact echoes like a falling anvil in the silent chamber.
"Read the board." The directive carries absolute ruin.
The Patriarch’s war ends tonight. And I am going to sever the head of the snake in front of the entire Undercity.
