Chapter 28 Cain

I smiled when I heard the moans resume from behind the door to the tower. Going back down to the main room where Dax was waiting, we had decided that staying in the nest made the most sense. We would be close enough if Calliope wanted us, while giving them the privacy they needed. My heart slammed into my chest making me hesitate just outside the door. There were so many things that could go wrong, so many ways either of us could slip up. That normally wouldn’t matter, save for both of us being killers. A slip up could get both of us killed. There was so much we didn’t know about each other, but for some reason I trusted him. That thought was enough for me to step back into the room.

His smile seemed genuine when he saw me. “Are you sure Calliope won’t mind if we use the nest?”

“She would love to come down and see us in her bed.” He didn’t seem to believe me, as he studied me for a moment.

Satisfied with whatever he saw, he graced me with a smile and sat back on the bed. Crossing the room, I crawled into bed beside him. My head came to rest on his lap, his hand playing with my hair as I handed him the book. His voice deepened as he read from the pages. He was lulling me nearly to sleep, his growl coming out at all the right places. We stayed like that for hours, until Ayden carried Calliope into the room. They stood there for a minute, listening to Dax. He was so involved with the story that he completely missed their entrance.

“Fuck, that’s hot.” He tensed as soon as he heard Calliope’s voice. “Don’t stop on our account.”

Dax looked up at them and smiled. “I think it’s time to go to bed. We have a long day tomorrow.”

Ayden set Calliope down and I crawled up beside her. There was a moment where Ayden and Dax struggled to figure out where to go. Calliope solved that by reaching out and pulling Dax down behind her. I reached up and wrapped my arms around Ayden’s neck. Pulling him down beside me, I buried my face in his chest. I couldn’t stop the sigh of relief that fell from my lips as Calliope cuddled up behind me.

???

I hated every second of this day. It was the first time in a long time that I was alone. Calliope and Dax were on some kind of date night. What they were doing, I didn’t know. Ayden was at work. Well, he had been until he texted me twenty minutes ago that he was headed home. I had spent every second of that time pacing the living room. What if he didn’t come home?

I couldn’t take losing him again.

Just the thought had me wanting to find a dark corner of the room and never leave it. I found myself climbing the stairs to the nest we shared with Calliope. There was something out of place, and I couldn’t stop myself from fixing it. I started with the sitting area, moving it to the other side of the room. The bed was placed facing the large windows. I loved the view. Sweat was starting to collect along my spine when I felt someone coming up behind me. Reaching down I pulled a blade from my ankle and spun. Releasing it with a flick of my wrist.

I blinked watching Ayden snatch it from the air as it flew by his head. “I love you too.”

I sighed with relief seeing him. “I don’t know why I’m so restless.”

He pulled me into his arms, his head coming down to press a gentle kiss against my forehead. I felt so safe in his arms—loved. I was sweating… Everything was too hot, and I couldn’t stand it. My cock was painfully hard, and it was all I could do to not fall to my knees and beg Ayden to knot me. I was tugging at my shirt tossing it over my head as my pants hit the floor. I pushed up against Ayden, trying to get as much of his scent on me as I could. My legs went out from beneath me as my hands came up his legs to the button of his pants. My hands worked far too slowly for my liking, and I released something that sounded suspiciously like a whine.

“You want your alpha’s cock, don’t you?” He was teasing me, and I hated it.

“Please.”

He moved back until he was sitting on the edge of the bed, his hands moved until he caught the button of his pants, pulling them down he shifted until he was naked. His cock slapped against his stomach as he laid back. My mouth watered from the sight. “Baby boy, I think—”

“Is that perfume?” I turned to see Dax and Calliope standing there.

“No, it’s not heavy enough.” She inhaled, and the movement of her breasts made my cock leak. The whine that built in my throat bubbled out before I could stop it. Calliope turned to Dax. “Handle him, I’ll call the doctor.”
