Chapter 5

That night I slept soundly. I woke up naturally the next day, enjoyed the sun on the balcony, and made a simple lunch.

Morning slipped into afternoon. Still no sign of her.

I figured I’d remind her.

I didn’t want this marriage another second.

I called. She hung up.

I called again. Hung up again.

Third time, she picked up and snapped, “SuYueming, are you annoying or what?!”

I stayed calm.

“Are you home yet?”

She paused, then her tone turned smug.

“Miss me already after one night? You practically pushed me out the door yesterday. I thought you’d lost your mind, but it turns out you’re just jealous.”

I let out a quiet laugh.

She was still so full of herself.

“What are you laughing at?”

She sounded irritated.

“Nothing. Just thinking you can be pretty ridiculous sometimes,” I said.

“…SuYueming, do you even hear yourself?!”

“Enough with the nonsense. Come home. We’ve got time today—let’s go to the civil affairs bureau and get the divorce certificate.”

Silence on the line.

Finally, she spoke.

“What did you say? Divorce?”

“Yeah.”

Something set her off. She exploded.

“SuYueming, fine, you’re throwing a jealous tantrum—I would let it slide. But now you’re joking about divorce? Don’t push it!”

Her voice rose higher with every word.

“What’s the point of running your mouth? If you’ve got the guts, actually go through with it! SuYueming, do you dare? Five years of marriage—you’d really throw it away?”

“There’s nothing to throw away.” I took a deep breath and let it out. “This marriage should’ve ended long ago.”
