Chapter 56 Scarlett

Scarlett

One more day until she would see Ben. It was so hard for her to concentrate on her classes that Friday when all she could think about was her meeting with him.

Lucky for her, her mom’s flight got in tomorrow morning, and her dad and Olivia were going to the airport to pick her up.

She told Olivia to ask their parents to take her out to breakfast. She didn’t want to risk them getting home before she left.

She was meeting Ben at a coffee shop downtown, a few blocks from her house, at nine tomorrow morning.

She would ride her bike there. The only one who knew about it was Avery.

They walked together now to the cafeteria.

Avery frowned. “Are you sure you don’t want me to be there in case there’s a problem?

I can sit at a table and pretend not to know you.

” Avery’s hair was pulled back into a ponytail and as usual, she wore a T-shirt with a slogan over a pair of jeans.

This one was black and on the front in white letters were the words Be Real Not Perfect .

“You’re such a worrywart. No, that’ll just make me nervous. I’ll be fine.”

“What’s his dad’s business?”

“I don’t know. Who cares?”

“We could, like, look him up, make sure it’s all legit,” Avery said.

“I told you, he is who he says he is. I have proof.”

“What kind of proof?”

Scarlett had promised Ben that she wouldn’t tell anyone about what the two of them had discovered, until they met and figured it all out together. “I can’t say, but you have to trust me.”

Avery narrowed her eyes. “I hope you know what you’re doing. Can you at least text me to say everything’s okay after you meet up?”

Scarlett nodded. “I will, but don’t expect it immediately. I don’t want to be on my phone as soon as I meet him.”

Scarlett wished Avery didn’t overthink everything so much. But she guessed that was what would make her a good journalist one day. She smiled at her friend.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be fine. Promise.”
