Chapter 10 #3

“Gurl bye, ain’t no fucking way. You too muthafuckin’ nice, Evie.

Fuck that nigga. He ain’t never been worthy of you anyway.

And you knew that’s exactly what I was gonna say had you told me this bullshit when he asked you.

But if you insist on going through with that foolishness, just be fucking careful and don’t forget to share your location. ”

“Fine, Mom,” Evie smacked her lips as she approached the register. “I promise to listen and be a good girl from now on.”

“See, that’s why ya mom was always poppin’ yo’ ass in the mouth when we were growing up, you petty whore.”

“No, she was just mad that she had a daughter who turned out to be exactly like her. And you’re mad that you fucked around and ran into a best friend who acts exactly like you as well.”

“Get off my phone, tramp.”

“Bye, boo thang.” Evie cackled when Kamryn ended the call.

After slipping her phone back into her purse, she paid for her items, then grabbed a new pair of pink Nikes and an order of pretzel bites before she left the mall.

By the time she arrived home, Evie realized that she had only an hour and a half to get ready, instead of the nearly three hours it normally took her.

Which meant she had to haul ass if she wanted to get to the wedding on time.

So, after grabbing a couple of washcloths and a towel, Evie made a beeline for the shower.

Once she was done, she dried and moisturized her body with a honeysuckle body balm, then slipped into her new deep-red bra-and-panties set before sitting at her vanity to do her makeup.

Happy with her beat, she removed her roller and finger-combed her curls and finally slipped into her short, plum-hued, sleeveless, ruched, tiered halter dress.

After a little one-two in the mirror, Evie grabbed her nude and gold clutch and nude heeled sandals and ran out the door.

As she backed out of her driveway, after keying in her location on her vehicle's GPS, her phone began ringing.

“Oh, so now you wanna call me back. What if I was having a mental breakdown, Aria?” Evie asked with a smack of her lips.

“Girl, please, you are a mental breakdown. What else is new? Excuse the fuck outta me for not making your petty ass the center of the universe. I been getting my back blown out all day and you blowing my damn high. Hell, I can’t help that that man just now turnt me loose.”

“Well bitch had you led with the fact that you were riding dick, I would have given you a pass for not picking up the phone this time.”

“Evie, you are truly insane. See, you always talking shit about Norie when y’all act just the fuck alike,” Aria cackled as she shook her head. “Anywayyyy, where you on your way to, Ms. Cuckoo?”

“To Owen’s sister’s wedding. He wanted me to be his plus one. I’m actually about fifteen minutes late, but hopefully he doesn’t say shit smart to me. Otherwise, I will walk right the fuck back out that door.”

“Bitch, didn’t I tell you not to go to that shit with him? I swear, you more hardheaded than a lil bit, Evie.”

“I know, but I owe him because I’ve just been stringing him along, so I figured it was the least I could do. He didn’t?—”

“He didn’t my ass, Evie,” Aria interrupted with the quickness.

“Whatever the fuck you were about to say was irrelevant like a muthafucka because that nigga don’t matter.

He ain’t never mattered. So what, you strung his ass along?

Niggas do bitches like that all the time.

Shit, he barely knew how to be a nigga when he was yo’ nigga for real.

He ain’t give a shit about you or keeping his word and shit. Girl, don’t fucking piss me off.”

“You right,” Evie didn’t hesitate to agree. “But still. I needed to do this for me. It’s my closure. Plus, I’m not staying the entire evening. Owen gets forty-five minutes of my time, and it's good riddance forever. I’m pulling up now. And this parking lot is packed, so I’m deducting five minutes.”

“Yeah, okay. We’ll see.” Aria smacked her lips in disbelief. “Just be safe, share your location, and call me when you get the hell outta there.”

“Geesh, you and Kam are so overprotective. And last time I checked, I was the muthafuckin’ oldest.”

“Act like it then, hoe. BYE!”

Evie cackled as she ended the call and searched for a parking space.

Because she refused to park around the corner or in the lot across the street due to those areas being so dimly lit, Evie was about to drive off and text Owen to cancel.

But before she could even grab her phone, a truck was vacating a space near the rear of the lot.

Evie checked herself in the mirror to ensure she had no lipstick on after shifting her car into park and turning off the engine.

Once she confirmed that there was no lipstick on her teeth and that she was still sexy as sin, she retrieved her phone from the passenger seat and exited the vehicle.

She hit her fob to lock the door before proceeding to cross the lot toward the front of the building.

Just before she turned the corner, Evie slowed her steps long enough to share her location with Kamryn and Aria.

But before she could open her messages, she was grabbed from behind, and a wet cloth covered her nose and mouth as she was dragged back toward the lot.

Though the cloth muffled her screams, Evie tried yanking and kicking her way free as her hands flailed about.

Fear surged through her veins and her heart raced as she prayed and fought for fucking life.

But all of her fighting to get free from her attacker was unfortunately in vain.

Because not only did a soul witness the assault, but the minute her head hit what felt like the hard floor of a van, everything went black.
