LAILAH #2
"Well, if I'm not a threat to you then I guess I'll just have to kill Mozog instead. Someone told me he was your favorite child, born of an angel, if the rumors are true," I threatened.
A grin spread across Lilith's face at my words.
"Would you look at that, an Elementi who knows how to play the game.
I warn you though, it's not wise to threaten something that you also could be hurt by in retaliation.
See, everyone's got a favorite to lose, but you have far more of them than I do, little warrior.
We'll have to do this again another time, seems we are about to be interrupted.
" Bopping me on the nose, Lilith stepped back and in a cloud of smoke she disappeared.
"Could my day get any worse?" I muttered as I tried to shake off that encounter and picked off the rest of the bush from my clothes.
Then I heard footsteps approaching, but didn't bother to look up having a good guess as to who it was.
"Jay, I haven't even been gone long enough for you to need to come looking for me. "
"Trouble—"
My head snapped up and there was Parker, standing a foot away from me. He looked awful, black eye, split lip, bruise on his chin, and his clothes rumpled like he slept in them. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to talk to you... alone, without the others breathing down my neck.
Not that I blame them for wanting to keep you away from me after what I did," Parker answered, rubbing the back of his neck nervously.
"I don't even know where to begin to tell you how sorry I am, or that I know I fucked up big time. "
"You fucked up? That's what you think you did?" I demanded, taking a step towards him. "Are you under the impression that I'm just going to brush this off, forgive you and move on like you didn't shatter my heart into a billion pieces? I fucking loved you, Parker."
His face paled at my words, making his bruising stand out even more. "You said loved… like past tense."
"Well, I'm glad to see your hearing wasn't affected by Micah's pounding," I said, baiting him. "Yes Parker—loved— I don't know how I feel about you right now, but I know it isn't love."
"Lailah, I deserve all your rage and pain for what I did to you. I also know that I have a lot of work ahead of me to prove that I do love you and want to earn your trust back," Parker explained. "The question is, are you going to give me a chance?"
Oh hell no, he is not going to make this my problem I wasn't the one who fucked up!
"Parker, I told you from the moment you told me about Phoebe that you were the one in control about whether things would cause problems or not.
" Seeing that he still wasn't getting it, I decided to spell it out for him.
"I. Did. Nothing. Wrong. You did. And now, it's your problem to figure out how to solve it. "
"Are you telling me there is no hope?" Parker pressed.
I covered my face with my hands, unable to deal with this situation, then dropped them to meet his gaze once again.
"Before I knew about the Elementi, or the fact that I was Synergy, you were one of my best friends.
We've been more than friends for five months and you still can't seem to understand me.
How is there any hope for us to be more, when you won't even risk trying?
I'm not the person to ask how to fix this, because at the moment I don't want to give you a chance, for fear you'll do it again or something worse.
With everything we have been through, I used to think I trusted you with my life, but I don't think that's true anymore since you abandoned me for you ex-girlfriend, who was already a host to the Mother of All demons.
" Unable to continue this conversation I turned and started walking away.
A hand shot out and grabbed my wrist, pulling me against their chest. I knew it was Parker, the feel of his body against mine was familiar and comforting, no matter how badly he betrayed me.
"Please don't walk away from me, Trouble.
I can't lose you, it will destroy me if there is no chance to fix things between us. "
My heart and mind were at war with each other on how to handle him, but I was saved when Jay rolled up in the Audi.
Putting the car in park he got out and walked over to us, his eyes locked on mine, ignoring Parker completely.
"Your parents are here, along with your brothers, it seems they decided you were taking too long to talk to them.
" Reaching out a hand, he gave me an out if I wanted it and I took it.
"Lailah, please," Parker begged. "Tell me there is even the slightest glimmer of hope I can fix this."
Jay wrapped his arm around my waist as I looked at Parker.
"It won't be easy, and I have no idea how long it will take, if it ever will, but you can try.
All I ask right now is time apart so I can heal from the damage you've done already.
If you can't respect that simple request, then I guess I'll have all the information I need to know that we will never work. "
"How much time?"
"I don't know," I answered honestly. "Guess you'll have to decide if you're willing to wait."
Parker nodded, his hands balling into fists. "I'll wait for as long as it takes, Lailah, I refuse to lose you forever, if there's a chance."
Jay opened the car door for me and helped me in before shutting it. He said something to Parker who nodded, not taking his gaze off of me until we drove off, leaving him there in the road.
