Chapter 8 The Empty Heart
The days following Yu Lan's awakening passed in a strange and uncertain haze, as though she were drifting between two worlds—one that everyone around her seemed to remember clearly and another that existed only as an empty void within her own mind.
Although her physical wounds had begun to heal remarkably well, the same could not be said for her memories.
The palace physicians remained hopeful that fragments of her past might eventually return, yet each passing day seemed to deepen her frustration.
While the people around her spoke fondly of the woman she had once been, Yu Lan felt increasingly disconnected from that person, as though they were describing the life of someone she had never met.
Prince Li Wei Chen remained by her side through it all.
To everyone else in the palace, his actions appeared to be those of a compassionate Crown Prince watching over a trusted palace lady who had been injured during the rebellion.
However, only he knew the truth hidden beneath his composed expression.
Every day demanded a painful act of restraint, for he was forced to stand beside the woman he loved while pretending that her distant politeness did not shatter his heart.
He could no longer reach for her hand as naturally as he once had.
He could no longer share the private jokes that had once made her laugh until tears formed in her eyes.
Most painful of all, he could no longer see any reflection of their shared memories when she looked at him.
Each smile she offered was courteous.
Each conversation remained careful.
And every respectful bow reminded him that she no longer remembered the man who had given her his heart.
Yet despite the pain, he never allowed his suffering to become her burden.
If fate had stolen her memories, then he would help her create new ones.
One afternoon, while the summer breeze carried the fragrance of blooming jasmine throughout the palace grounds, Wei Chen brought Yu Lan to a secluded section of the imperial gardens where they had once spent countless evenings together.
The garden was particularly beautiful that day.
Sunlight filtered through the leaves of ancient willow trees, casting dancing patterns of light across the stone pathways, while vibrant peonies and lotus blossoms added splashes of color to the landscape.
The gentle sound of flowing water accompanied their footsteps as they wandered through the winding paths.
Yu Lan paused beside a koi pond and watched the colorful fish move lazily beneath the water's surface.
"It's strange," she said softly as her reflection shimmered among the ripples. "Everyone tells me that I loved this place, yet no matter how hard I try, I cannot remember standing here before."
Wei Chen stood beside her in silence for a moment before replying.
"Perhaps you are looking for memories when you should simply allow yourself to enjoy the present."
Yu Lan turned toward him with curiosity.
"How can I enjoy the present when I don't even know who I am?"
The question carried far more weight than she intended.
For a brief moment, Wei Chen saw the fear she had been trying so hard to hide behind her calm demeanor. Beneath her determination to recover, she remained frightened by the possibility that the missing pieces of herself might never return.
He lowered his gaze toward the pond before speaking.
"I think people spend too much time searching for who they used to be," he said thoughtfully. "Perhaps who you become is just as important."
Yu Lan considered his words carefully.
The answer did not solve her problem, yet it brought an unexpected sense of comfort.
Ever since she had awakened, everyone seemed obsessed with helping her remember her past. Wei Chen, however, was the first person who seemed willing to accept the person she was now.
As evening approached, the palace became bathed in shades of amber and gold. Yu Lan found herself wandering alone toward the western terrace, drawn by a feeling she could neither understand nor resist.
The moment she stepped onto the marble platform, an unfamiliar ache settled within her chest.
A cool breeze drifted through the air, carrying with it the scent of cherry blossoms from distant trees. The terrace itself appeared ordinary enough, yet something about the location felt deeply significant.
She slowly approached the balustrade overlooking the mountains.
Her fingers brushed the smooth stone.
A strange sensation washed over her.
Without warning, the jade pendant hanging around her neck began to grow warm.
At first, the change was subtle.
Then the warmth intensified.
The emerald gemstone pulsed softly against her skin, and a brilliant flash of green light briefly illuminated her vision.
The world around her disappeared.
In its place emerged the image of a young man and a young woman standing together beneath a shower of drifting cherry blossoms.
Bathed in the golden glow of a setting sun, they gazed at one another with such tenderness that the sight immediately stirred something deep within Yu Lan's heart.
Their hands hovered only a breath apart, and the quiet smile they shared carried an intimacy that words could never adequately describe.
Although the faces within the vision remained indistinct, the warmth radiating from the memory felt achingly familiar, as though it belonged to a part of herself that had merely fallen asleep rather than disappeared.
Before she could step closer or understand what she was seeing, the vision dissolved like mist beneath the morning sun.
The terrace returned.
The breeze faded.
The emerald light vanished.
Yu Lan remained standing alone beneath the darkening sky, her hand pressed firmly against her chest as she struggled to steady her breathing.
Although the memory had lasted only a few seconds, it left behind a powerful sense of longing that she could neither explain nor ignore.
For the first time since losing her memories, she felt certain of one thing.
The forgotten pieces of her past were still there.
Somewhere deep within her heart, waiting patiently to be found.
And perhaps, just perhaps, they were already beginning to awaken.
