Chapter 9 Whispers of the Forgotten Song
Several days passed after Yu Lan's mysterious vision on the western terrace, yet the memory continued to linger in her thoughts like the fading fragrance of spring blossoms carried upon a distant breeze.
Although she could no longer deny that fragments of her past were beginning to surface, the experience only deepened her frustration.
Every glimpse seemed to arrive unexpectedly before vanishing just as quickly, leaving behind more questions than answers.
It was as though her memories existed behind a thick veil that occasionally shifted enough for her to see shadows of the truth before concealing them once more.
Despite her determination to remain hopeful, loneliness continued to grow within her heart.
The palace was filled with people who knew her name.
Yet she felt like a stranger among them all.
Each day brought stories about the woman she used to be, while each night reminded her that she could not remember becoming that woman.
Only one thing remained constant.
Prince Li Wei Chen never left her side.
Whether accompanying her through the palace gardens, joining her during meals, or simply ensuring that she was comfortable, his presence had become a quiet source of comfort she found herself increasingly dependent upon.
Though she could not remember the bond they had once shared, she often felt an unexplainable sense of peace whenever he was nearby.
One evening, after spending the afternoon reading historical records in an attempt to stimulate her memory, Yu Lan retired to her chambers earlier than usual.
Rain clouds had gathered throughout the day, and by nightfall a gentle storm had settled over the palace.
Soft rain tapped against the lattice windows while distant thunder rolled through the mountains beyond the capital.
The soothing rhythm quickly lulled her to sleep.
That night, the dreams returned.
Yet unlike before, the vision was clearer.
Far clearer.
When Yu Lan opened her eyes, she found herself standing within the breathtaking jade garden she had witnessed during previous visions.
Countless emerald blossoms glowed beneath a twilight sky filled with shimmering stars.
Crystal streams wound gracefully through the landscape, their waters reflecting silver and green light that seemed to come from the garden itself rather than the heavens above.
Towering trees fashioned from jade stretched toward the sky, their branches adorned with luminous flowers that never faded.
Everything appeared impossibly beautiful.
And impossibly ancient.
As though time itself held no power within this place.
Yu Lan slowly turned in wonder.
"What is this place?"
The question barely left her lips before a gentle voice answered.
"It is the Garden Eternal."
Startled, Yu Lan turned toward the sound.
Standing beneath the largest jade tree was the mysterious woman she had encountered before.
The figure wore flowing emerald robes embroidered with golden vines that shimmered softly in the glowing light. Long silver hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her presence carried a quiet authority that felt both comforting and intimidating.
"You."
The woman smiled.
"We meet again, Child of Jade."
Yu Lan approached cautiously.
"Who are you?"
The woman's gaze drifted toward the magnificent tree towering overhead.
"I am known by many names, though long ago the people of this land called me the Jade Empress."
The title sent a strange shiver through Yu Lan.
"The Jade Empress..." she repeated quietly.
The very name sounded familiar.
Not familiar enough to trigger a memory.
But familiar enough to stir something deep within her soul.
"I don't understand any of this," Yu Lan admitted. "Why do I keep seeing this place? Why does it feel as though I've known it my entire life?"
For a moment, sadness touched the ancient woman's eyes.
"Because a part of your soul remembers what your mind has forgotten."
Before Yu Lan could ask another question, music suddenly drifted through the garden.
A soft melody floated upon the breeze.
Delicate.
Gentle.
Hauntingly beautiful.
The notes seemed to weave through the glowing trees and crystal streams like a living thing.
Immediately, Yu Lan pressed a hand against her chest.
Her heart reacted before her mind could.
"That song..."
The Jade Empress studied her carefully.
"You recognize it."
"I don't know."
Yu Lan closed her eyes.
"But it feels important."
The melody grew louder.
And with it came another vision.
For a brief moment, the jade garden disappeared.
In its place appeared a familiar palace pavilion bathed in moonlight.
A young woman sat beside a lotus pond holding a bamboo flute.
Across from her stood a handsome prince dressed in dark royal robes.
Although the faces remained blurred and indistinct, Yu Lan instinctively knew who they were.
The woman was herself.
The man was Wei Chen.
The prince watched quietly as she played the melody drifting through the night air, and although neither spoke, there was a tenderness between them that words could never fully capture.
The scene felt warm.
Safe.
Beloved.
Yet just as Yu Lan tried to move closer, the vision shattered like glass.
The pavilion vanished.
The music faded.
And she found herself standing within the Jade Garden once more.
Yu Lan's breathing had become uneven.
"What was that?"
"A memory."
The Jade Empress answered calmly.
"A small piece of what was lost."
Yu Lan's eyes widened.
"A memory?"
Hope surged through her.
For the first time since waking from her coma, she had seen something unquestionably real.
Something that belonged to her.
Something that connected her to the past she had been desperately searching for.
"Can you help me remember everything?"
The ancient spirit's expression softened.
"I cannot restore what must be reclaimed by your own heart."
The answer disappointed her.
"Then what am I supposed to do?"
The Jade Empress extended her hand.
"When memories are tied only to the mind, they can be forgotten."
Glowing petals drifted around them.
"But memories tied to love are far more difficult to erase."
Yu Lan awoke suddenly.
The rainstorm had ended.
Moonlight spilled through the windows of her chamber.
For several moments she lay motionless, attempting to process what she had witnessed.
The dream felt different from every dream before it.
More vivid.
More real.
And the melody lingered clearly within her thoughts.
Without thinking, she began humming the tune.
Softly.
Instinctively.
As though her heart remembered every note despite her memory loss.
The following afternoon, Yu Lan wandered through the palace gardens while absentmindedly humming the same melody.
She barely noticed the familiar tune escaping her lips.
At least until she heard footsteps abruptly stop behind her.
Turning around, she discovered Prince Li Wei Chen standing several paces away.
His expression was unlike anything she had ever seen.
Shock.
Disbelief.
And something dangerously close to hope.
"Where did you hear that song?" he asked.
Yu Lan blinked.
"This melody?"
Wei Chen nodded.
His gaze never left her.
"You were humming it."
She thought for a moment.
"I heard it in a dream."
The Prince's heart immediately began racing.
Because it was not just any melody.
Years ago, during one of their many evenings together beneath the moonlit gardens, Yu Lan had composed that very tune upon a bamboo flute.
It had become their song.
A melody known only to the two of them.
And now she was humming it from memory.
"Yu Lan," he said carefully, "do you remember anything else?"
The moment he asked, the melody seemed to echo inside her mind.
Suddenly, more fragments appeared.
Moonlight reflected across a lotus pond.
The sound of laughter.
The warmth of someone holding her hand.
Cherry blossoms dancing upon the evening breeze.
And a pair of dark eyes looking at her with unmistakable affection.
"Wait..."
Yu Lan pressed her fingers against her temple.
The flashes intensified.
For one breathtaking moment, she felt certain she was about to remember everything.
Then pain shot through her head.
The images shattered.
The memories vanished.
And the empty darkness returned.
She stumbled forward.
Immediately, Wei Chen caught her before she could fall.
The closeness sent another strange sensation through her heart.
Comfort.
Safety.
Familiarity.
Yet the memory itself remained frustratingly out of reach.
Although disappointment threatened to overwhelm her, Wei Chen gently steadied her shoulders.
"You don't have to force it."
Yu Lan lowered her gaze.
"But I was so close."
His expression softened.
"Then that means the memories are still there."
For the first time in many weeks, genuine hope appeared within his voice.
"You're finding your way back to them."
And somewhere deep beneath the palace, hidden within ancient chambers untouched for centuries, the Jade Pendant pulsed with emerald light.
The Garden Eternal had begun to awaken.
And with every recovered memory, Yu Lan was moving one step closer to discovering not only her forgotten past, but the destiny that awaited her beyond it.
