Chapter 11 Rise of the Shadows and the Journey to the Celestial Mountains

Although the discovery of the ancient underground sanctuary and the warnings delivered by the Jade Empress had answered many of Yu Lan's questions, the revelations brought little comfort.

Instead, they opened the door to even greater dangers, for the existence of the Jade Heart was no longer merely an ancient legend preserved within forgotten prophecies, but a very real artifact whose fate appeared intertwined with both the future of the empire and the mysterious Garden Eternal.

As the days passed, an uneasy tension spread throughout the Imperial Palace, and even the most optimistic advisors could sense that a storm far greater than the previous rebellion was rapidly approaching.

Prince Li Wei Chen wasted no time strengthening the empire's defenses.

Garrison commanders received new orders, border patrols were reinforced, and trusted generals were dispatched to strategic regions throughout the kingdom.

Despite these precautions, disturbing reports arrived from every direction with alarming frequency.

Entire villages near the western provinces reported attacks during the night, trade caravans disappeared without explanation, and several regional officials were found murdered under mysterious circumstances.

The attacks seemed random at first glance, yet Wei Chen quickly recognized a troubling pattern hidden beneath the chaos.

Someone was searching.

Someone was gathering information.

Someone was systematically preparing the empire for a larger conflict.

That person was Lord Xu Feng.

Far beyond the capital, hidden within the ruins of an abandoned fortress nestled among jagged cliffs, Lord Xu Feng stood before a massive map spread across a stone table. Flickering torchlight illuminated his face as dozens of loyal followers gathered around him, awaiting their leader's commands.

The failed assault on the palace had cost him many soldiers, yet the setback had done nothing to diminish his ambition. If anything, failure had only strengthened his determination.

For years, Xu Feng had searched for the Jade Heart.

For years, every clue had led him deeper into forgotten ruins, ancient records, and hidden legends buried beneath centuries of history.

Now he finally understood what had eluded him.

The key had never been the artifact itself.

The key was Yu Lan.

A cruel smile appeared on his face as one of his scouts knelt before him.

"Our agents within the capital have confirmed the rumors, my lord. The palace has discovered an ancient sanctuary beneath the gardens."

Xu Feng's eyes darkened with satisfaction.

"Then the prophecy is real."

The scout lowered his head.

"There is more."

"Speak."

"The girl survived."

The room fell silent.

For several moments Xu Feng said nothing.

Then he slowly turned toward the flame-lit map and traced a finger across a mountain range marked near the northern border of the empire.

"So, destiny still favors her."

His voice carried both amusement and irritation.

"Very well."

Turning toward his commanders, he delivered the order that would plunge the empire into turmoil.

"Launch attacks across every province. Strike supply routes, military outposts, and communication networks. Force the Crown Prince to divide his attention."

The commanders bowed immediately.

Xu Feng continued.

"While the empire watches the shadows, we shall claim the Jade Heart."

Back in the capital, reports of increasing violence arrived daily. The Imperial Court quickly became overwhelmed as frightened officials debated how best to respond to the growing crisis.

During one particularly tense meeting, General Han Mo strode into the council chamber carrying a sealed scroll bearing the markings of the Imperial Intelligence Bureau.

The moment he finished reading its contents, a grim expression appeared on his face.

Wei Chen immediately noticed.

"What happened?"

Han Mo took a deep breath.

"Three border fortresses were attacked over the past two nights. The enemy isn't holding territory."

The prince frowned.

"Then what are they doing?"

The General placed the scroll on the table.

"They are creating distractions."

At that moment, Yu Lan felt a chill run through her body.

The answer seemed painfully obvious.

"They're buying time."

Every eye turned toward her.

"The Jade Heart."

Silence filled the chamber.

Han Mo slowly nodded.

"They know we're searching for it."

Wei Chen's expression darkened.

"Which means we no longer have the luxury of waiting."

Later that evening, as crimson sunlight bathed the palace gardens in shades of gold and red, Yu Lan stood beneath the ancient willow trees studying the prophecy carved into a copied parchment recovered from the sanctuary.

Although she had read the words countless times, something about them continued to disturb her.

"When jade blooms under crimson skies, two souls shall awaken the Garden Eternal."

The phrase felt less like a prophecy and more like a warning.

Lost in thought, she failed to notice the jade pendant growing warm against her skin.

The familiar emerald glow appeared once more.

The world around her faded.

And suddenly she found herself standing within the Garden Eternal.

The Jade Empress awaited her beneath the vast branches of the great jade tree.

Unlike previous encounters, the ancient spirit's expression appeared troubled.

Before Yu Lan could speak, the Empress raised her hand toward the horizon.

The beautiful gardens immediately transformed.

Dark clouds swallowed the sky.

Shadowy figures marched across burning landscapes.

Cities fell.

Mountains trembled.

The Garden itself began to wither beneath waves of darkness.

Yu Lan's breath caught.

"What is happening?"

"The future."

The Jade Empress looked toward her solemnly.

"Or one possible future."

Fear tightened within Yu Lan's chest.

"Can it be prevented?"

The spirit nodded.

"Only if the Jade Heart is found first."

The visions faded.

The Garden returned.

Then the Jade Empress extended her hand toward distant mountains rising beyond the glowing horizon.

"The Jade Heart rests within the Celestial Mountains."

Yu Lan stared.

The mountains stood impossibly tall, their snow-covered peaks piercing the heavens themselves.

"The journey will not be easy."

The spirit's voice softened.

"The path was designed to test those who seek the heart, for only those deemed worthy may claim its power."

"How do we find it?"

The Jade Empress smiled faintly.

"You will not walk alone."

When Yu Lan awoke from the vision, night had already fallen over the palace.

Without delay, she sought out Prince Wei Chen.

Within the hour, General Han Mo and Mei Xue had also been summoned.

As the four companions gathered within a private chamber illuminated by lantern light, Yu Lan shared everything she had learned.

When she finally finished, silence filled the room.

Han Mo was the first to speak.

"So the artifact is hidden inside the Celestial Mountains."

Yu Lan nodded.

Mei Xue looked uncertain.

"And we must travel there before Xu Feng finds it."

"Exactly."

Wei Chen folded his arms thoughtfully before finally reaching his decision.

"Then we leave immediately."

The certainty in his voice left no room for argument.

Preparations began before dawn.

Only a small group would undertake the journey, as traveling with a large escort would attract unnecessary attention. The Crown Prince, Yu Lan, General Han Mo, and Mei Xue would travel together, accompanied by a handful of trusted guards during the first portion of the route.

As the palace gates opened beneath the first light of morning, Yu Lan mounted her horse and looked back one final time at the city she had come to call home despite her missing memories.

A strange mixture of excitement and uncertainty filled her heart.

Everything felt different.

For the first time since her awakening, she was no longer simply searching for the past.

She was moving toward her future.

Beside her, Prince Wei Chen noticed the thoughtful expression on her face.

"Nervous?"

Yu Lan smiled softly.

"A little."

His expression gentled.

"We'll face whatever comes together."

The simple reassurance warmed her more than he realized.

As their horses began descending the road leading away from the capital, neither noticed the figure watching them from a distant rooftop.

Hidden beneath a dark cloak, the spy quickly vanished into the crowded streets.

Within hours, word of their departure had already begun making its way toward Lord Xu Feng.

And somewhere far beyond the empire's borders, among the towering peaks of the sacred Celestial Mountains, the Jade Heart waited patiently within the shadows, unaware that both its guardians and its hunters were already racing toward the same destiny.
