Chapter 18 Reclaimed #3

He could remember them and still laugh.

He could miss them and still love Nico.

He could honor them without destroying himself.

Gideon lifted his head.

Nico looked at him.

“I want something.”

“Tell me.”

“I don’t want to just survive anymore.”

Nico’s expression changed.

Gideon took a slow breath.

“I’ve spent six years thinking that was enough.”

He looked toward the mirror.

“I wake up. I go to work. I come home. I sleep. I repeat it.”

His eyes met Nico’s.

“I don’t want that anymore.”

Nico did not interrupt.

“I want a life.”

The words felt almost frightening.

“I want a home.”

Nico smiled.

“I want to come home to someone.”

Gideon’s voice softened.

“I want mornings where the first thing I think about isn’t whether someone is going to die.”

Nico’s eyes grew wet.

“I want ordinary things.”

“Like what?”

Gideon smiled.

“Coffee.”

“Very ambitious.”

“Your coffee is terrible.”

Nico laughed.

“Keep going.”

“I want to argue with you about what movie we’re watching.”

“You already do that.”

“I want to complain about your music.”

“You already do that too.”

Gideon smiled.

“I want to wake up beside you.”

Nico’s smile faded into something warmer.

“I want your clothes in my apartment.”

“I have clothes there already.”

“More.”

“How many?”

“Enough that you stop pretending you don’t live there.”

Gideon laughed.

Then the laughter faded.

“I want a future.”

Nico looked at him.

“With you.”

Silence settled around them.

Gideon reached for Nico’s hand.

“I don’t know exactly what it looks like.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I know.”

“I just know I want it.”

Nico squeezed his fingers.

Gideon looked down at their hands.

“I want a home where I don’t have to be ready to leave.”

Nico’s expression softened.

“I want a place where your boots can stay by the door.”

Gideon smiled.

“And your tattoo equipment doesn’t take over every surface.”

“That’s negotiable.”

“I want a life where the past is allowed to exist without deciding what happens tomorrow.”

Nico stepped closer.

“That’s the life I want too.”

Gideon looked into his eyes.

“You still want me?”

Nico frowned.

“Of course.”

“Even with all this?”

Nico touched his chest.

“Especially with all this.”

Gideon swallowed.

He knew what Nico meant.

Not the scars.

Not the tattoo.

All of it.

The grief.

The fear.

The history.

The parts of Gideon that were still learning how to trust happiness.

“You make me want things,” Gideon said.

Nico smiled.

“Good.”

“That’s dangerous.”

“Only if you think wanting is dangerous.”

Gideon considered that.

Then he shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at the tattoo again.

“The dangerous thing was believing I didn’t deserve them.”

Nico lifted Gideon’s hand to his lips and kissed his knuckles.

“You deserve a life.”

Gideon’s eyes closed.

“I believe you.”

It was a simple sentence.

But it was one of the hardest things he had ever said.

They remained together in front of the mirror.

Gideon studied his reflection one more time.

He saw the scars.

He saw the tattoo.

He saw the man who had entered the warehouse six years ago.

He saw the man who had walked out.

He saw the firefighter who had spent years trying to earn permission to live.

And he saw someone new.

Not healed completely.

Not fearless.

Not untouched by the past.

Just alive.

And finally willing to admit that being alive was not something he needed to apologize for.

Gideon turned toward Nico.

“I love you.”

Nico smiled.

“I love you too.”

There was no dramatic declaration.

No perfect speech.

Just two people standing together while the city moved outside.

Gideon kissed him.

Slowly.

Tenderly.

When they separated, Nico rested his forehead against his.

“What now?”

Gideon smiled.

“Home.”

Nico looked toward the studio.

“Mine or yours?”

Gideon thought about it.

“Ours.”

Nico laughed softly.

“You decided that quickly.”

“I’ve been deciding for six years.”

Gideon took his hand.

“I just didn’t know what I was deciding toward.”

They turned off the studio lights.

Before leaving, Gideon looked once more at the mirror.

The tattoo was fresh.

The scars were still visible.

The past remained.

But it no longer felt like a sentence.

It felt like history.

Something that had happened.

Something that had shaped him.

Something he could carry without letting it carry him.

Outside, the street was quiet.

The firehouse stood across from the studio.

Gideon looked at it.

For years, he had thought his life was divided into before the fire and after it.

Now he understood there was another division.

Before Nico.

And after him.

Before he believed survival was punishment.

And after he learned it could be a beginning.

Gideon reached for Nico’s hand as they walked home.

The gesture came naturally.

He did not think about it.

He did not hesitate.

He simply reached.

Nico’s fingers closed around his.

Gideon smiled.

The fire had taken people he loved.

It had taken years.

It had left scars that would never disappear.

But it had not taken everything.

Somehow, through all of it, something had survived.

Not just Gideon.

Hope.

Love.

Choice.

And the part of him that still wanted tomorrow.

For the first time, that was enough.
