Chapter 16

The Gravity of the Orbit

It is nearly eight-thirty in the morning, and although Lucius is sitting deep inside the leather chair of his private office with several critical, pending court files spread across the dark wood of the desk in front of him, absolutely none of his sharp attention is focused on the legal documents.

His cold eyes remain fixed intently on the massive floor-to-ceiling glass window instead, overseeing the expansive main entrance of his isolated estate.

The sprawling limestone house stands precariously on the quiet outskirts of Brooklyn, positioned far enough from the urban core that the usual, frantic noise of the city never manages to reach these coordinates properly.

A profound, heavy silence exists within this place, but it is far from the peaceful or comforting kind.

Everything within the perimeter of this estate is calculatedly controlled and heavily guarded.

Every concrete wall, every hidden security camera, and every heavy locked gate surrounding the massive property has been engineered with a singular, protective purpose.

Ordinary people like to foolishly believe that the criminal underworld survives on raw, unthinking violence alone.

That naive assumption is always deeply amusing to a man of Lucius's intellect.

Real power has never belonged to the trigger-happy fools who rely on mindless violence to make a point.

True power belongs to information. It belongs to the systematic weaponization of fear.

It belongs to absolute, unwavering control over every moving variable.

And for years of his life, Lucius has mastered all three mechanisms flawlessly, building an empire that no one dares to touch.

Yet today, despite the mounting workload waiting on his desk, his analytical thoughts keep drifting entirely somewhere else.

Because he is sitting there, waiting for her arrival.

Since last night, Tessa remains deeply embedded inside his head in ways that are beginning to severely irritate his calculated nature.

The vivid image of her face keeps returning to his subconscious at the most unexpected moments of the morning.

Her shallow, nervous breathing. The absolute confusion swirling in her wide eyes after she closes the remaining distance to kiss his lips, as if even her own innocent mind cannot fully comprehend why she has surrendered her control so easily.

And perhaps the most dangerous part of the equation—Lucius cannot force his own mind to forget the heat of the contact either.

Just then, the distant, low rumble of a car engine reaches the wrought-iron gates of the estate, immediately pulling his sharp attention toward the gravel entrance outside.

A few seconds later, the sleek black vehicle rolls to a smooth, silent stop directly in front of the house.

Victor steps out from the driver’s seat first, adjusting his suit jacket, before opening the heavy back door with practiced professionalism.

Then, Tessa steps out into the morning light.

Lucius’s dark gaze stills for a brief, heavy moment behind the glass pane.

Today she is wearing a soft, flowing one-piece dress—simple, understated, and devoid of any overly expensive fabrics or dramatic details—yet somehow, the material suits her frame perfectly.

The dress itself is undeniably beautiful, but the woman wearing it is significantly more distracting to his focus.

It is interesting. Very few variables in his life ever manage to distract his intellect this easily.

As if sensing the weight of his stare, Tessa looks up toward his office instinctively, and the exact moment their eyes meet through the glass, a small, incredibly nervous smile appears on her pale lips.

The expression looks uncertain, highly hesitant, as if she is still standing on the pavement, not fully convinced that coming into his orbit is the right decision for her safety.

Lucius leans back slightly in his chair, keeping his features unreadable, and gives a subtle, single nod of his head, silently granting permission for his guards to bring her up.

Victor escorts her inside the heavy front doors immediately. A few tense moments later, the double doors of his office click open softly.

The exact second Tessa steps past the threshold and into the room, Lucius notices her entire body stiffen almost instantly, her posture defensive.

Her expressive eyes scan the layout of the massive office carefully before freezing in terror on the black handgun resting openly on his desk.

Then, her anxious attention shifts upward, locking onto the mounted tactical shotgun displayed prominently against the dark wood of the wall.

Her slender fingers tighten visibly around her leather bag.

Fear. It is a primary human emotion that appears differently in every single person Lucius cross-examines.

Some individuals try their best to hide it behind false bravado.

Some completely freeze in place. Some run from the source until they are hunted down.

But Tessa’s fear is fascinating to observe because despite feeling the sheer terror radiating from the weapons, her small body stays grounded, remaining exactly where she stands in the centre of the room.

Lucius leans back further into the plush leather of his chair. “There’s nothing to be afraid of, Tessa,” he says, his deep voice remarkably calm and level against the silence. “Those are simply part of my work tools.”

Her wide gaze remains rigidly fixed on the mounted shotgun, refusing to trust the space. A faint, dark smirk touches the corner of Lucius's lips.

“I’m a lawyer,” he continues smoothly, his tone conversational. “I handle high-profile cases connected heavily to underworld clients. Moving around this city without absolute protection tends to become incredibly inconvenient for my health.”

Her attention finally snaps away from the wall and returns to his face. Lucius glances once toward the mounted shotgun before speaking again, his underlying amusement deepening slightly at her wariness. “And that? That one is just decoration. A statement piece.”

She does not offer a verbal response to his explanation, but Lucius’s sharp eyes notice the rigid tension in her shoulders lessen just a fraction of an inch. His long fingers brush lightly over the cold metal of the gun resting on his desk, the texture familiar against his skin.

“As for this weapon…” he says quietly, his voice dropping an octave, “recent events in the alleys have made carrying it far more practical than optional.”

For a fleeting second, the raw memories from last night flash through his mind with an uncomfortable, piercing clarity—the violent bullet impact, the heavy scent of fresh blood, the consuming darkness of her shop, and Tessa’s trembling breathing beneath his palms right before she kisses him.

His voice pauses briefly, absorbing the echo.

Intentional or not on her part, the definitive result of that night remains exactly the same: she has already stepped past the boundary and into his dangerous world.

Without saying a single word further to address the tension, Lucius picks up several thick manila files from his desk and slowly slides them across the polished wood toward her side. Tessa looks down at the documents with immediate, deep confusion.

“These files belong to low-level criminals,” he explains calmly, gesturing toward the papers. “Small Street gangs, minor fraud operations, illegal smuggling deals. Most of the critical information has already been systematically collected by my operatives.”

She reaches out and opens one of the files carefully, her fingers tracing the edges.

Inside the pages are neatly typed rows of names, private phone numbers, short legal notes, and highly detailed personal observations.

Her confusion only deepens further as her eyes scan the data, a fact Lucius notices immediately.

“Your job here is actually very simple,” he continues, pinning her with his gaze. “You’ll call these numbers.”

Her eyes lift back toward his face, wide with sudden realization. “Call them?”

Lucius nods once, his expression unyielding. “Friendly conversations. A harmless, ordinary tone. You’ll use your voice to completely lower their guard.”

Her fingers tighten slightly around the edge of the papers, realizing the gravity of the request. Then Lucius continues, delivering the strategy. “After that, you’ll ask specific, targeted questions. Everything you need to extract is already written down there.”

She lowers her eyes again, turning the page, and realizes that the conversational scripts have already been prepared neatly for her by his hand, every single sentence carefully organized in advance to manipulate the targets.

Lucius watches her emotional reaction closely, analysing the micro-expressions on her face.

She is deeply, visibly uncomfortable with the task.

Good. In his calculations, comfortable people consistently become careless and make fatal mistakes. Nervous people stay hyper-vigilant and careful.

“You’ll make at least fifteen to twenty of these calls today,” he says calmly, establishing the quota. “If the work is completed properly and the data is secured, you’ll be dropped safely back at your fashion shop afterward.”

Something shifts in her pale expression then, the reality hitting her home. Finally, she is beginning to understand that this is not a normal, bureaucratic assistant job. This is an entry point into his world. And his world is never simple, safe, or innocent.

He glances toward Victor, who remains standing silently near the office doors like a loyal shadow. “From now on,” Lucius says slowly, his voice carrying the weight of an executive order, “Victor will bring you here every single morning and take you back to your boutique personally.”

Tessa’s head lifts immediately, her breath catching.

This time, Lucius sees more than mere surprise burning in her eyes; there is a wave of genuine panic rolling through her features now too.

It is interesting to watch her realize the bars of the cage.

She is beginning to understand a very important truth about his nature: once someone enters the gravitational orbit of Lucius, leaving it is rarely an easy task.

He gestures with his hand toward the smaller, interconnected room beside his main office. “You can work comfortably in there. It has everything you need.”

Then, after a brief, heavy pause, he adds in a much quieter, raspy voice that holds her frozen, “And Tessa…”

She looks up at him automatically, trapped by his delivery.

“Do exactly what I instructed. Not a single word less. Not a single word more.”

The massive room falls into a dead, suffocating silence once again. She remains standing there in the centre of the office for several long seconds, the heavy files still held tightly against her chest while thousands of anxious thoughts visibly move behind her eyes, battling her compliance.

But the most fascinating, dangerous part of the entire sequence is this—even now, with the exit right behind her back; she still hasn’t turned around or walked away from him.

And sitting there in the quiet room, watching her small figure finally move toward the side office, Lucius realizes something with absolute, dangerous certainty. This game between them has only just begun.
