Chapter 17

The Architecture of Deception

Tessa still cannot force her mind or body to feel completely comfortable within the heavy architecture of the estate.

Ever since she initially steps inside Lucius’s private office that morning, absolutely everything around her perimeter serves as a constant, unforgiving reminder of exactly what kind of dangerous world she has blindly walked into.

The massive limestone estate itself feels intimidating enough to freeze her blood on an ordinary day.

The heavily armed guards standing like silent monoliths outside every single carpeted hallway, the cold security cameras hidden in almost every ornate corner of the ceiling, and the suffocating, expensive silence hanging inside the massive house like a physical,

living organism—it all carries a quiet kind of lethal danger that never truly disappears from the atmosphere.

Even inside the main office, that exact same heavy feeling follows her every micro-movement.

The tactical shotgun mounted casually against the polished dark wood of the wall.

The black handgun lying openly and carelessly on his desk as if it belongs there as naturally as a pen.

And most of all, the freezing confidence in the way Lucius moves around those instruments of death without even noticing their presence anymore.

Everything about his existence screams visceral danger to her survival instincts.

And yet, strangely enough… his deep, gravelly voice is the only variable in the entire room keeping her frantic mind calm.

The calm, calculated way he delivers his words makes everything sound controlled, manageable, and almost normal to her ears.

When he smoothly explains that the heavy weapons are simply there for legal safety and protocol, she forces her mind to believe his narrative, even though deep down in her chest she already knows an incredibly important truth.

Nothing about Lucius’s life is normal, safe, or innocent.

Tessa lowers her wide eyes toward the thick manila files again, desperately trying to anchor her focus on the typed lines of work instead of the imposing man sitting only a few feet away from her chair.

Every single folder in her custody contains highly detailed, confidential intelligence about different, dangerous people—extensive criminal records, private phone numbers, psychological behavioural notes, emotional weak points, family connections, and daily operational habits.

Some of the files even include explicit, chilling observations about how easily a specific target can be systematically manipulated or broken through their emotional attachments.

That is the exact moment the realization hits her all over again, making her chest tighten.

Lucius isn’t just a highly intelligent lawyer who understands the mechanics of the courtroom.

He understands the raw mechanics of the human mind.

He understands exactly how people think in a panic, what they secretly fear in the dark, and what specific triggers make them careless enough to leave a trail.

That kind of psychological knowledge is infinitely more dangerous to the world than raw physical violence.

After reading through his meticulous instructions carefully, she gathers the papers and carries the files into the smaller, interconnected office connected directly to his main room.

A heavy, dark wooden door separates the two distinct spaces, though a significant portion of the shared wall between them is made of flawless glass, allowing her to see his silhouette clearly from where she sits at her new desk.

Even while she is actively working on her assignments, his massive presence somehow fills the entire space around her frame.

Sometimes she looks through the glass and notes that he sits back deeply in his chair while reviewing thick legal documents under the lamp.

Sometimes he speaks quietly and raspy into his phone with faceless people whose names she doesn’t recognize from her own files.

And every now and then, without warning, his dark eyes lift directly toward her through the glass pane.

That specific part of the routine makes her nervous system flare every single time it happens.

It feels completely, utterly impossible for her to ignore the heavy weight of his focused attention on her skin.

Tessa takes a deep, stabilizing breath to calm her erratic pulse before lifting the receiver and dialling the very first number on the log. The SNM gang. The documented leader’s name is Damin.

At the first sound of the connection, the man’s voice sounds incredibly suspicious, harsh, and heavily guarded, exactly the way someone deeply involved in illegal, violent business is supposed to sound over a phone line.

But as Tessa forces herself to follow the precise, conversational script Lucius has prepared neatly for her, the tense dialogue slowly, fluidly becomes smoother.

It grows friendlier. It grows vastly easier for the target to navigate.

And that is when she truly realizes Lucius has been entirely right earlier in his philosophy.

The absolute easiest way to psychologically manipulate people is to force them to feel completely comfortable first.

By the end of the long call, Damin is talking casually and laughing enough that his arrogant mind barely even notices exactly how much critical information he has already blindly revealed to a stranger.

The exact moment the line goes dead, Tessa realizes that her right hand is trembling slightly against the plastic of the phone.

But there simply isn’t a single second permitted for her to stop or find her bearings.

A second call follows immediately after the first.

Then a third, gruelling call. Then another name on the ledger.

Each distinct criminal behaves differently under her voice.

Some targets are overly cautious and demand verification.

Some are stupidly arrogant and take her tone as a sign of submissiveness.

Some talk far too much simply because they thoroughly enjoy hearing themselves speak from a position of power.

And with every subsequent conversation she manages to survive, Tessa slowly begins realizing something else about her employer.

Lucius already knows exactly how every single one of these dangerous people will behave long before she has even picked up the phone to dial their numbers.

He hasn’t given her random, bureaucratic busywork just to keep her out of his way.

He is systematically teaching her how to navigate the shadows.

The hours pass slowly as one criminal call blends seamlessly into another.

Somewhere around the fifth official call on her sheet, she dials the private number connected directly to the notorious BTG gang leader.

The first few minutes of the dialogue feel normal enough by her new standards.

She follows the lines of the script smoothly while the man responds casually, his guard lowered by her soft demeanor.

But after a while, something dark in his underlying tone begins changing.

The flow of the conversation shifts away from business, dropping into intrusive personal fields, and before she can steer it back, the aggressive, predatory flirting begins.

Tessa frowns immediately, a sudden wave of irritation crawling beneath her skin, but she forces herself to keep following the written script anyway because Lucius has made it entirely clear that the data needs to be collected properly.

The man through the receiver laughs softly, his tone dripping with arrogance.

“Your voice sounds way too pretty for this kind of messy work, sweetheart,” he murmurs.

A deep sense of disgust tightens inside her chest instantly.

Every instinct in her body is screaming a massive red flag, sensing the underlying threat.

Still, she ignores the rising panic, attempting to steer the dialogue back toward the secure script, hoping to secure the details and end the connection quickly.

Then suddenly, the interconnected office door swings open.

Before Tessa can react properly to the interruption, Lucius walks seamlessly into the room, his long fingers extending to calmly but unyieldingly take the receiver right out of her hand.

His movements are incredibly smoothed, controlled, and dangerously calm.

He lifts the device to his ear without changing a single muscle in his expression, but looking up into his face, Tessa sees the shift immediately anyway.

His dark eyes have turned entirely, freezing cold.

“I’ve been listening to everything you’ve been saying,” Lucius says quietly, his voice a low, lethal purr against the plastic.

The criminal on the other side responds with a sentence that Tessa cannot hear from her seat, but Lucius merely smiles faintly at the audio. That specific smile frightens her far more than an explicit display of rage ever could, because the amusement never reaches his eyes.

Then he speaks again, his delivery perfectly level. “Next time you choose to speak to her in that manner…” He pauses for several agonizing seconds, letting the silence threaten the target through the line. “…pray that I do not hear it again.”

An icy chill runs straight through Tessa’s chest at the delivery.

His deep voice isn’t raised, and technically, his words aren’t even an explicit threat.

But somehow, the absolute lack of emotion and the calm control itself makes the warning terrifying.

Without waiting for a response, Lucius disconnects the line and hands the phone back down to her desk.

Then, his intense gaze locks directly onto her wide eyes. “Next time someone talks to you like that,” he says quietly, his tone absolute, “you end the call immediately. No scripts.”

For a long moment, Tessa cannot formulate an answer.

She just stares up at him. That same unshakable control still exists in his handsome expression, cold and composed as always, but beneath the rigid ice, she recognizes something entirely new.

Possessiveness. The sudden realization sense strange, intoxicating warmth through her blood so rapidly that a small smile almost appears on her lips before she forcefully clears her face to hide it from his observation.

Lucius watches her silently for a few more seconds, his sharp intellect noticing far more of her inner reaction than she ever wants him to perceive, before turning on his heel and walking back toward his main office without another word.

And somehow, her erratic heartbeat completely refuses to steady itself long after his silhouette has gone past the glass partition.

The taxing assignments continue for gruelling hours.

Ten calls. Twelve calls. Then more names on the ledger.

The longer the interrogation process goes on, the more profoundly exhausted Tessa becomes.

Maintaining the exact same mask of fake sweetness in her voice over and over again while actively manipulating hardened underworld criminals feels mentally draining in ways she has never anticipated.

By late afternoon, a throbbing headache is beating painfully against her temples.

At one point, unable to stare at the small text any longer, she presses her fingers flat against her forehead and close her eyes briefly in the quiet room.

That is exactly when the wooden door opens again. Victor walks inside the space, carrying a small, steaming espresso cup on a tray. Tessa blinks in sheer surprise as the right-hand man places the beverage down beside her files before offering her a faint, knowing smirk.

“Focus on your work, Queen,” Victor murmurs dryly.

Her eyes widen slightly at the title. Queen?

The man is clearly enjoying her confusion and the absurdity of the situation.

But somehow, the vastly more disturbing, icy realization is this—Lucius probably already knows exactly how exhausted her body is without her ever uttering a complaint.

Victor returns to the main office afterward, standing right beside Lucius’s desk while the two men speak quietly about private affairs she cannot hear through the barrier.

Occasionally, Lucius’s eyes drift toward her through the glass partition, tracking her posture.

And slowly, Tessa begins understanding a terrifying truth.

That man notices absolutely everything about her existence.

Every micro-expression. Every split-second of hesitation. Every shallow breath.

Nearly eleven hours of continuous manipulation pass before the gruelling work finally comes to an end.

By then, Tessa feels completely, utterly drained of energy.

Her head is throbbing, her throat is parched, and her vision blurs slightly every time she forces herself to look down at the files for too long.

When her eyes finally check the clock on the wall, she realizes it is almost seven in the evening.

Finally, her shift is over. It is time to go home to her safe world.

She stands up slowly, her muscles aching, and organizes the remaining papers before walking out into the main office.

Lucius is already standing there, waiting for her by the exit.

In his long hand, he is holding a sleek, black designer shopping bag.

The exact moment she approaches his perimeter, he extends the item toward her frame with a calm, unbothered motion.

Tessa shakes her head immediately, stepping back a fraction. “No… you really don’t need to do things like this for me.”

His dark gaze remains flawlessly steady on her face, refusing to lower the bag. Then, in that same deep, calm voice, he says quietly, “You’re connected to my work now, Tessa.” He holds the material slightly closer to her fingers. “So consider this a simple gift from me.”

They are remarkably simple words, delivered in a perfectly simple tone.

Yet, something about the gravity of his posture makes her chest tighten strangely.

Because somehow… it doesn’t feel like just an ordinary gift between an employer and an assistant.

It feels like something vastly more permanent.

It feels as if Lucius is slowly, carefully, and systematically pulling her deeper into the currents of his dark world—until one day, she won’t even remember how to find the exit anymore.
