Chapter 18
The Anatomy of Desertion
It is nearly twelve-thirty at night, and the sprawling stone house has fully fallen into a deep, oppressive silence.
The massive estate always becomes noticeably quieter after the midnight hour passes, but tonight the stillness feels significantly heavier somehow, almost suffocating to his senses.
Beyond the faint, persistent electronic hum of the high-tier security system hidden seamlessly inside the walls, there is absolutely no sound echoing anywhere in the mansion.
Inside his private study room, the dim amber light radiating from the desk lamp spreads weakly across the dark wooden furniture and casts long, distorted shadows against the high walls, giving the entire perimeter a cold, unyielding atmosphere that most ordinary people find deeply intimidating.
Lucius usually likes it that way. Silence is a tool that helps his sharp intellect think clearly and analyse strategies.
But tonight, that vital clarity is becoming irritatingly difficult for him to grasp.
Several confidential legal documents remain scattered carelessly across the dark wood of his desk, lying completely untouched alongside fresh court files and a half-finished glass of whiskey that has been sitting there for almost an hour without him taking a single subsequent sip.
Normally, by this specific time of night, his focus would already be entirely consumed by his professional work—methodically reviewing high-stakes criminal cases, analysing complex corporate contracts, and preparing lethal cross-examinations for his upcoming court appearances.
Productivity and the cold mechanics of his career have always been infinitely easier for him to navigate than human emotion.
Yet tonight, his relentless attention flatly refuses to stay where it belongs. Because instead of analysing his high-tier legal files, his focus remains tightly fixed on one singular name.
Tessa.
Her personal file still lays open directly in front of his hands under the lamp.
Over his years in the shadows, Lucius has systematically investigated countless people—hardened underworld criminals, corrupt politicians, powerful businessmen, and desperate traitors.
Human history and personal lineage have always fascinated his intellect, primarily because the past consistently reveals the exact psychological weaknesses that people try so desperately to hide from the world.
Information inevitably creates leverage.
Leverage, in turn, creates absolute control.
And without total control, power itself becomes entirely meaningless on the streets.
That baseline rule of survival has never once failed him before tonight. But as the clock ticks past midnight, for the first time in years, reading through someone’s personal background file feels strangely, uncomfortably personal.
He leans back slightly in the plush leather of his chair, his long fingers slowly scrolling through the digitized records displayed on the glowing tablet screen.
Tessa Jones. That is her old, original name on the documentation.
Then, several years later down the ledger—the name has been legally changed to Tessa.
Lucius’s cold eyes linger on her surname longer than necessary, analysing the legal record.
It is her mother’s maiden name. The official explanation is already neatly included beneath the state records: her British father has completely abandoned the family years ago.
He has provided absolutely no financial support, cut off all physical contact, and taken zero responsibility for the child.
He has simply disappeared from their lives as if they had never mattered a single fraction to his existence.
After that sudden abandonment, her mother has raised her entirely alone in the city, until death eventually steps in and takes her away too, leaving her completely isolated.
Lucius’s jaw tightens slightly in the amber light, a hard ridge forming along his cheek.
He has never tolerated the concept of abandonment well in his perimeter.
Because people who selfishly pack up and leave others behind rarely possess the capacity to understand the catastrophic, structural damage they create in their wake.
The worst wounds of desertion are not always visible from the outside.
Sometimes the deepest psychological damage happens silently, slowly hollowing someone out from within, until they no longer possess the capability to trust another human soul properly.
Suddenly, analysing the data, Tessa’s defensive behaviour makes far more sense to his intellect.
Her constant hesitation. The quiet, guarded way she endlessly observes people before ever speaking a word aloud.
The instinctive, protective distance she always maintains between herself and everyone else who tries to approach her perimeter.
She has already learned a brutal, permanent lesson far too early in her development—people leave.
Just then, a sharp knock sounds against the heavy wood of the study room door. Without lifting his eyes from the glowing screen, Lucius says calmly, "Come in."
Victor enters the room quietly, his physical movements fluid, holding a secure tablet in his right hand. He approaches the dark desk without any unnecessary motion before placing the device directly in front of Lucius’s hands.
"Interesting update from the field," Victor says, his tone casual but carrying an underlying weight.
Lucius picks up the tablet and scans the fresh data.
Surveillance photographs taken by his operatives appear first on the screen.
Clear airport footage. Immediate financial transaction records.
Private address transfer documents. Then, his eyes lock onto the primary name on the sheet: Nisha. Tessa’s so-called aunt.
His expression immediately turns freezing cold, his posture tensing.
According to the field reports, Nisha has quietly and permanently left the city with her son.
It is not a temporary corporate trip. Plane tickets have already been booked weeks ago; the apartment paperwork has been officially transferred, and all financial accounts have been moved elsewhere.
And perhaps the most interesting, brutal part of the calculation—Tessa has absolutely no idea she has been left behind.
Lucius’s long fingers tap slowly, rhythmically against the desk, the sound echoing in the quiet room. "So she lies to her," he says quietly, his voice dropping into a lethal register.
Victor leans casually against the wall nearby, crossing his arms. “Looks like it.”
Lucius lowers his cold gaze toward the screen again, absorbing the facts.
The apartment lease has already been officially transferred under another family’s name, and according to the attached field reports, the building section will soon undergo heavy renovation.
Within days, Tessa will no longer have anywhere to stay in that building, even if she tries returning to her bedroom.
Yet nobody in her family has bothered to tell her the truth.
A slow, heavy irritation spreads through Lucius's veins gradually.
It is interesting to his intellect. Normally, the domestic decisions and petty betrayals of a middle-class woman would never deserve a single second of his precious attention.
He deals with far larger, global problems on a daily basis—dangerous men, corrupt organizations, and criminal networks capable of destroying lives overnight.
But somehow, this specific situation feels fundamentally different to his core.
Because this is not the first time the people in her life have abandoned her to the dark.
First her father disappears into thin air.
Then death takes her mother away. And now this so-called aunt has quietly, selfishly walked away from her too.
People enter Tessa’s life only to leave her behind on the pavement.
Victor watches his face for several silent seconds before speaking again, a trace of hidden amusement buried beneath his professional tone. “What now, sir?” Victor asks lightly. “Planning to punish the aunt for her bad manners?”
Lucius completely ignores the question because his analytical mind is already focused somewhere else entirely. “Background?” he asks instead, demanding the facts.
Victor answers immediately, his memory sharp. “Corporate employee. Mid-level finance department. Clean public image, but a fake, opportunistic personality underneath.”
A faint, dangerous smirk touches Lucius's lips. “Expected.”
Right then, the study room door opens again. Alex walks inside the dark space, the cold night air still clinging to his leather jacket. He removes his helmet and drops it onto the desk with a sharp metallic sound before stepping forward into the amber light.
“We personally check the property records,” Alex says directly, getting straight to the point. “Ownership of the apartment has already been legally transferred under another family’s name.”
Lucius’s dark eyes narrow slightly. Alex continues, “Demolition begins tomorrow morning at dawn. The old structure will be completely broken down before the new reconstruction starts.”
The massive room falls into a dead, suffocating silence for several long seconds after that revelation. Slowly, Lucius leans back deeply in his chair, his gaze unreadable. “Does she know?”
Alex and Victor exchange a brief, telling glance before Alex finally shakes his head. “No. She’s completely in the dark.”
Something icy and unyielding settles inside Lucius's chest immediately.
Tomorrow morning, Tessa will probably return home completely unaware of the reality waiting for her on the pavement.
She will walk back expecting the comfort of familiarity and instead finds herself effectively homeless in Brooklyn. Alone. Again.
He closes his eyes briefly, leaning his head back, and almost instantly her face appears behind his eyelids.
Those uncertain, wide eyes constantly trying to hide her confusion from his stare.
The nervous little smile she gives whenever she becomes overwhelmed by his presence.
The stubborn, beautiful way she keeps trying to stay strong even when physical exhaustion is visibly dragging her down.
It is interesting to his analytical mind.
Because his first survival instinct should be to maintain absolute distance, quiet observation, and strategic control over the witness.
Instead, he is already actively planning ways to completely remove the problem before the pain ever reaches her perimeter.
It is a dangerous shift in his personal protocols.
Victor’s voice interrupts his thoughts again, this time carrying an obvious note of dry amusement. “You’re getting emotionally invested, sir.”
Lucius slowly opens his dark eyes, pinning his right-hand man with a warning glare. "Careful, Victor. Watch your tongue."
Victor laughs quietly before falling silent again, stepping back into the shadows.
But unfortunately, Lucius knows the man isn’t entirely wrong in his assessment.
His attention returns toward the tablet screen before another tactical thought crosses his mind suddenly.
Her boutique. Immediately, he looks toward Alex. “The shop?”
Alex hesitates briefly before answering. “No security issues there yet. But if she loses her apartment tomorrow morning, she’ll probably try staying inside the boutique temporarily to survive.”
A low curse escapes Lucius's lips quietly into the silence.
Because that specific move will make her incredibly vulnerable on the streets.
Very vulnerable. Brooklyn after dark is not a safe place for anyone, especially for an innocent woman without proper armed protection.
And the sudden realization deepens his underlying irritation even further.
Without another word, Lucius stands up abruptly from his leather chair. Victor straightens his posture immediately, noticing the sharp, decisive shift in his employer's expression.
“Tomorrow morning,” Lucius says calmly while reaching for his heavy wool coat, his voice carrying the weight of an absolute directive, “the car will be ready at dawn.”
Victor’s amusement disappears completely, replaced by professional surprise. “You’re going down there personally, sir?”
Lucius slips the coat on slowly, adjusting the lapels as he steps out from behind the desk. “Yes.” Then, after several seconds of heavy silence, he adds quietly— “Before she realizes everyone else already left her behind.”
